"Gabriel's Oboe" is the main theme for the 1986 film The Mission directed by Roland Joffe. The theme was written by Italian composer Ennio Morricone, and has since been arranged and performed several times by artists. Vocalist Sarah Brightman begged Ennio Morricone to allow her to put lyrics to the theme to creat her own song, "Nella Fantasia" In 2010, Ennio Morricone encouraged soprano Hayley Westenra to write English lyrics for "Gabriel's Oboe" in her album Paradiso.

Ennio Morricone(born Nov. 10, 1928) 이 시대의 가장 뛰어난 영화음악가 중 한사람이며 이태리 출신으로 영화음악의 독보적인 거장이다. 산타 시실리아 음대를 졸업, 순수음악을 꿈꾸며 수편의 교향곡들을 작곡하며 살던 중 생활고에 못이겨 영화음악의 길로 들어서게 되었다. 유명한 영화 '황야의 무법자'의 방랑의 휘파람 소리를 작곡 했다. 그 후 '석양의 건맨', 'once Upon a Time in America' 'The Mission(1986)'과 'Cinema Paradiso(1989)' 등 많은 영화 음악을 작곡했다.
