Martyrdom of St Stephen
"But Stephen, filled with the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at God’s right hand. ‘I can see heaven thrown open’ he said ‘and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.’ At this all the members of the council shouted out and stopped their ears with their hands; then they all rushed at him, sent him out of the city and stoned him. The witnesses put down their clothes at the feet of a young man called Saul. As they were stoning him, Stephen said in invocation, ‘Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.’" - Acts 7:55-59.

Stephen, in Acts 7, took a serious risk, but it was for proclaiming the good news about Jesus. While performing miracles, he was seized, falsely accused of blasphemy against God and the Mosaic law, and brought before the high priest (6:8-14). In response to a question from the high priest (7:1), Stephen took a risk and preached a sermon he knew his hearers would not like. He said that throughout Israel’s history, the nation had repeatedly rejected God’s messengers. And now, they had rejected the Messiah.
Stephen’s sermon provoked a strong reaction. “They cried out with a loud voice, stopped their ears, and ran at him with one accord; and they cast him out of the city and stoned him” (vv.57-58). Why would Stephen risk his life to preach about Jesus? He desperately wanted his hearers to know that because of Jesus’ death and resurrection, they no longer needed to live under the law but could live under grace and forgiveness (6:13-15; Eph. 2:8-9). Jesus died so that we may have eternal life.
Lord, You have done so much for us. You give us our very breath and blessing upon blessing. We give ourselves back to You to useto spread the glorious gospel of Christ. Amen.
A Christian’s life is a window through which others can see Jesus.

[51] "You stiff-necked people, with uncircumcised hearts and ears! You are just like your fathers: You always resist the Holy Spirit! [52] Was there ever a prophet your fathers did not persecute? They even killed those who predicted the coming of the Righteous one. And now you have betrayed and murdered him-- [53] you who have received the law that was put into effect through angels but have not obeyed it." [54] When they heard this, they were furious and gnashed their teeth at him. [55] But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, looked up to heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. [56] "Look," he said, "I see heaven open and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God." [57] At this they covered their ears and, yelling at the top of their voices, they all rushed at him, [58] dragged him out of the city and began to stone him. Meanwhile, the witnesses laid their clothes at the feet of a young man named Saul. [59] While they were stoning him, Stephen prayed, "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit." [60] Then he fell on his knees and cried out, "Lord, do not hold this sin against them." When he had said this, he fell asleep.
[8:1] And Saul was there, giving approval to his death. on that day a great persecution broke out against the church at Jerusalem, and all except the apostles were scattered throughout Judea and Samaria. [2] Godly men buried Stephen and mourned deeply for him.

사람이 신형 아이패드를 갖기 위해 무엇까지 내놓을 수 있을까요? 어떤 17세의 소년은 자신의 신장을 내놓았지요! 아이패드를 살 여유가 없었던 그 소년은 위험한 수술도 기꺼이 감수할 만큼 그것을 간절히 원했던 것입니다.
사도행전 7장에서 스데반도 심각한 위험에 처했었지만, 그것은 그가 예수님에 관한 복음을 선포하였기 때문이었습니다. 그는 기적을 행하였음에도, 하나님을 모독하고 모세의 율법을 어겼다는 이유로 붙잡혀 부당하게 정죄되고, 대제사장 앞으로 끌려갔습니다(6:8-14). 대제사장의 추궁에 답하면서(7:1) 스데반은 위험을 감수하며 청중들이 좋아하지 않을 설교를 했습니다. 그는 이스라엘이 그 역사를 통해 반복적으로 하나님의 사자들을 거부해왔으며, 지금은 메시아를 거부하고 있다고 지적하였습니다.
스데반의 설교는 격렬한 반응을 불러일으켰습니다. “그들이 큰 소리를 지르며 귀를 막고 일제히 그에게 달려들어 성 밖으로 내치고 돌로 쳤습니다.”(57-58절) 스데반은 무슨 이유로 자기 목숨을 버리면서까지 예수님에 관해 설교하려 했을까요? 그는 예수님이 죽으시고 부활하심으로써 사람들이 더 이상 율법에 매어 있지 않고 은혜와 용서 아래에서 살 수 있게 된 것을 그들이 알기를 간절히 원했던 것입니다(6:13-15; 엡 2:8-9). 예수님이 죽으심으로 우리는 영생을 누릴 수 있게 되었습니다.
주여, 주님은 우리를 위해 너무나 많은 것을 하셨습니다. 우리에게 생기를 주시고 은총 위에 은총을 더해주셨습니다. 그리스도의 영광된 복음을 널리 전하는 데 우리를 쓰시도록 우리 자신을 주님께 돌려 드립니다. 아멘.
