우리에게 '석별(惜別)'이란 제목으로 번안되어

널리 애창되던 'Nita Juanita' 입니다.

 

서편의 달이 호숫가에 질 때에

저 건너 산에 동이 트누나

사랑 빛이 감도는 빛난 눈동자에는

근심어린 빛으로 편히 가시오

친구 내 친구 어이 이별 할까나

친구 내 친구 잊지 마시오.

 

학창시절에 많이 부르고 듣던 노래지요.

특히 모임이 끝날 때나 송별연에서 많이 들었던 기억이 있습니다.

제가 고국에서 60년 대에 언니들 한테 배웠던 노래입니다.

 

이 노래는 Nita Juanita 라는 이름의 스페인 여인을

사랑하는 남자의 러브송입니다.

흔히 “A Spanish Ballad”, “A Song of Spain” 등이 부제로 붙기 때문에

스페인 민요로 오인되기도 합니다.

이 노래는 California Gold Rush가 한창이던 1855년 California에서

Caroline S. Norton (1808-1877)의 노랫말에

T.G. May가 곡을 붙여서 발표가 되었습니다.

"Juanita" ("Nita Juanita") is a love song variously subtitled "A Spanish Ballad", "A Song of Spain", and others. "Juanita" was first published in 1855, attributed to Mrs. Norton, with music arranged by T. G. May. The opening four-bar phrase of the song is taken from Hendel's aria Lascia dh'io pianga from the opera Rinaldo, although the subsequent melody differs from that of the aria. The name of the song is derived from the refrains:
