사는 것의 어려움 / 법정

(The Difficulty of Living)

 

 

이 세상을 고해라고 한다.

고통의 바다라고.  사바세계가 바로 그 뜻이다.

이 고해의 세상, 사바세계를 살아가면서

모든 일이 순조롭게 풀리기만 바랄 수는 없다.

어려운 일이 생기기 마련이다.

 

The world is called the "ocean of suffering."

This "sea of pain" refers precisely to the mundane

Living in this "ocean of suffering,"

we cannot expect to smoothly unravel everything that

   come our way.

Difficulties must always arise. 

 

어떤 집안을 들여다봐도 밝은 면이 있고, 어두운 면이 있다.

삶에 곤란이 없으면 자만심이 넘친다.

잘난 체하고 남의 어려운 사정을 모르게 된다.

마음이 사치해지는 것이다.

 

Were we to look inside any home, there would be bright

   spots and dark spots.

A life without difficulties leads to an excess of conceit.

With smugness, we become ignorant to the difficult

   situations of others.

Our mind becomes indulgent. 

 

그래서 보왕삼매론은

‘세상살이에 곤란이 없기를 바라지 말라’고 일깨우고 있다.

또한 ‘근심과 곤란으로써 세상을 살아가라’고 말한다.

 

This is why the "The King of Treasures Samadhi Treatise"

   enlightens us in saying.

"Do not wish for a life without hardship," and

"Anxieties and difficulties sustain life." 

 

자신의 근심과 걱정을 밖에서 오는 귀찮은 것으로

판단하지 말아야 한다.

그것을 삶의 과정으로 여겨야 한다.

숙제로 생각해야 한다.

자신에게 어떤 걱정과 근심거리가 있다면 회피해서는 안 된다.

그걸 딛고 일어서야 한다.

 

We must not think of our own anxieties and concerns

as annoyances that come from outside.

We must not consider such things as the process of life,

thinking of it all as an unsettled question, life's homework.

If some source of anxiety presents itself to us, we should

   not try to avoid it.

We must overcome it.

 

어떤 의미가 있는가.

왜 이런 불행이 닥치는가.

이것을 안으로 살피고 딛고 일어서야 한다.

 

What does it all mean?

Why did this misfortune befall me?  

We must look within to examine these questions and

   overcome them. 

 

저마다 이 세상에 자기 짐을 지고 나온다.

그 짐마다 무게가 다르다.

누구든지 이 세상에 나온 사람은

남들이 넘겨볼 수 없는 짐을 지고 있다.

그것이 바로 그 인생이다.

 

Each of us comes into this world bearing our own burdens.

The weight of each of these burdens is differents.

No matter who enters into this world, we all

carry baggage that cannot be passed on to anyone else.

That's exactly what life is.

 

세상살이에 어려움이 있다고 달아나서는 안 된다.

그 어려움을 통해 그걸 딛고 일어서라는

새로운 창의력, 의지력을 키우라는

우주의 소식으로 받아들여야 한다.

 

When life brings difficulties, we must not run away.

We must accept the tidings of the cosmos

bidding us to overcome our difficulties and

to nurture a fresh will-power and originality.
