Humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you. — 1 Peter 5:6-7
In the 19th century, ships were often recklessly overloaded, resulting in those ships going down and the crews being lost at sea. In 1875, to remedy this negligent practice, British politician Samuel Plimsoll ledthe charge for legislation to create a line on the side of a ship to show if it was carrying too much cargo. That “load line” became known as the Plimsoll Line, and it continues to mark the hulls of ships today.
Sometimes, like those ships, our lives can seem overloaded with fears, struggles, and heartaches. We can even feel that we are in danger of going under. In those times, however, it is reassuring to remember that we have a remarkable resource. We have a heavenly Father who stands ready to help us carry that load. The apostle Peter said, “Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you”(1 Peter 5:6-7). He is capable of handling the cares that overwhelm us.
Though the testings of life may feel like a burden too heavy to bear, we can have full assurance that our heavenly Father loves us deeply and knows our load limits. Whatever we face, He will help us to bear it.
Heavenly Father, I sometimes feel as if I can’t go on. I am tired, I am weak, and I am worn.
Thank You that You know my limits
better than I do. And that, in Your strength,
I can find the enablement to endure.
God may lead us into troubled waters
to deepen our trust in Him.

Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for "God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble." 화물탑재 적정선
[ 베드로전서 5:5 - 5:9 ] - 찬송가543장
하나님의 능하신 손 아래에서 겸손하라 때가 되면 너희를 높이시리라 너희 염려를 다 주께 맡기라 이는 그가 너희를 돌보심이라 - 베드로전서 5:6-7
19세기에 선박들은 무모할 정도로 화물을 초과 적재하였습니다. 그래서 배가 침몰하고 선원들이 바다에서 실종되는 일이 많았습니다. 1875년에 이 무책임한 관습을 타파하기 위해 영국의 정치가 사무엘 플림솔이 앞장서서 화물의 과적여부를 알 수 있게 선박 옆에 선을 긋는 법을 책정했습니다. 그후 이 “화물 적재선”은 플림솔 라인이라고 일컬어지게 되었고, 오늘날까지 선박의 선체에 표시하는 줄이 되었습니다.
19세기의 선박들처럼, 때로는 우리 삶도 두려움이나 고통, 번민들로 너무 많은 짐을 지고 있는 것처럼 여겨지기도 합니다. 우리는 침몰할 위기에 처해 있다고 느끼기까지 합니다. 하지만 그럴 때 오히려 우리에게 놀랄만한 자원이 있다는 것을 기억하면 안심이 됩니다. 우리에게는 그 무거운 짐을 질 수 있도록 돕기 위해 준비하고 계시는 하나님 아버지가 있습니다. 사도 베드로는 이렇게 말합니다. “그러므로 하나님의 능하신 손 아래에서 겸손하라 때가 되면 너희를 높이시리라 너희 염려를 다 주께 맡기라 이는 그가 너희를 돌보심이라”(벧전 5:6-7). 우리를 압도하는 모든 염려를 하나님은 다 해결하실 수 있습니다.
인생의 시험들이 견디기에 너무 힘든 것처럼 느껴진다 해도, 우리에게는 하늘에 계신 우리 하나님께서 우리를 깊이 사랑하시고 우리가 질 수 있는 짐의 한계를 아신다는 확신이 있습니다. 하나님은 우리가 어떤 일을 만나도 견딜 수 있게 도와주십니다.
하나님 아버지, 더 이상 견딜 수 없다고 느낄 때가
있습니다. 피곤하고, 약하고, 지쳤습니다. 하나님께서 제 한계를 저보다 잘 알고 계신 것을 감사드립니다. 그리고 바로 하나님의 능력 안에서 제가 인내할 수 있는
능력을 찾을 수 있음을 감사드립니다.
하나님은 우리의 믿음을 깊게 하시려고 고난의 바다로 우리를 이끌기도 하신다.
