Every May Day(May 1) in Oxford, England, an early morning crowd gathers to welcome spring. At 6:00, the Magdalen College Choir sings from the top of Magdalen Tower. Thousands wait in anticipation for the dark night to be broken by song and the ringing of bells. Like the revelers, I often wait. I wait for answers to prayers or guidance from the Lord. Although I don’t know the exact time my wait will end, I’m learning to wait expectantly. In Psalm 130 the psalmist writes of being in deep distress facing a situation that feels like the blackest of nights. In the midst of his troubles, he chooses to trust God and stay alert like a guard on duty charged with announcing daybreak. “I wait for the Lord more than watchmen wait for the morning, more than watchmen wait for the morning”(v. 6). The anticipation of God’s faithfulness breaking through the darkness gives the psalmist hope to endure even in the midst of his suffering. Based on the promises of God found throughout Scripture, that hope allows him to keep waiting even though he has not yet seen the first rays of light. Be encouraged if you are in the middle of a dark night. The dawn is coming?either in this life or in heaven! In the meantime, don’t give up hope but keep watching for the deliverance of the Lord. 영국의 옥스퍼드에서는 매년 5월 축제일(5월 1일) 이른 아침에 봄맞이를 위해서 많은 사람들이 모입니다. 아침 6시에 맥덜렌 대학 합창단이 맥덜렌 타워 꼭대기에서 노래를 부르는데, 수많은 사람들이 노래와 종소리에 따라 어둠이 걷히기를 기대하며 기다립니다. 그렇게 기다리며 흥겹게 떠드는 사람들처럼 나도 종종 기다리는 것이 있습니다. 나는 기도응답이나 주님의 도우심을 기다립니다. 언제까지 기다려야 되는지 정확히는 모르지만 기대하며 기다리는 것을 배우고 있습니다. 시편 130편에서 시편기자는 칠흑과 같은 상황에 처한 깊은 고통을 기록하고 있습니다. 그는 고난 가운데서도 하나님을 신뢰하며 새벽을 알리는 파수꾼 같이 계속 깨어 있기로 작정합니다. “파수꾼이 아침을 기다림보다 내 영혼이 주를 더 기다리나니 참으로 파수꾼이 아침을 기다림보다 더하도다”(6절). 어둠을 뚫고 나오는 하나님의 신실하심을 기대하기 때문에 시편기자는 고통 가운데서도 희망을 가지고 견딥니다. 성경 전반에 걸쳐 발견되는 하나님의 약속에서 오는 바로 그 희망이 있기에 그는 아직 첫 빛 줄기는 보지 못했지만 계속 기다릴 수 있습니다. 당신도 어두운 밤 가운데에 있다면 용기를 내십시오. 이 세상에서든 천국에서든, 새벽은 오고 있습니다! 그러는 동안에 희망을 잃지 말고 주님께서 구원해주실 것을 계속 기다리십시오. 주님은 신실하게 이루어주실 것입니다.

God can be trusted in the light and in the dark.

In Psalm 130:5–6 the wordwait(s)appears five times. In the Lord’s development of our personal faith, He often delays an answer to prayer to deepen our trust in Him. At times this can be perplexing. Asking for His intervention for a wayward child or for healing of a painful illness often carries a sense of urgency. We pray, “Lord, I need your helpnow!” But “waiting on the Lord” takes discipline and develops a perseverance in our faith that only steadfastness can yield. Abram waited years for Isaac, the child of promise, to finally be given to him. And this was through Sarah’s unlikely conception when she was advanced in years and beyond the age of childbearing. Yet God’s sovereign hand was orchestrating these events. Abram waited on God in prayer, and eventually God granted him offspring too numerous to count (Genesis 12; 16:10; 17:1–19).
