| BEAUTIFUL SCARS |

| Her sins, which are many, are forgiven, for she loved much. - Luke 7:47 |
A number of years ago I was hiking along the Salmon River and came across a grove of pine trees that had been partially stripped of their bark. I knew from a friend who is a forester that the Native Americans who hunted this area long ago had peeled the outer bark and harvested the underlying layer for chewing gum. Some of the scars were disfiguring, but others, filled with crystallized sap and burnished by wind and weather, had been trans-formed into patterns of rare beauty.
So it is with our transgressions. We may be scarred by the sins of the past. But those sins, repented of and brought to Jesus for His forgiveness, can leave behind marks of beauty.
Some people, having tasted the bit-terness of sin, now loathe it. They hate evil and love right-eousness. Theirs is the beauty of holiness.
Others, knowing how far they fall short (Rom.3:23), have tender hearts toward others. They rise up with understand-ing, compassion, and kindness when others fail. Theirs is the beauty of humility.
Finally, when acts of sin are freely and thoroughly for-given it leads to intimacy with the one who has shown mercy. Such sinners love much for much has been forgiven (Luke 7:47). Theirs is the beauty of love. - David Roper |

Luke 7:36-49
[36] Then one of the Pharisees asked Him to eat with him. And He went to the Pharisee's house, and sat down to eat.
[37] And behold, a woman in the city who was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at the table in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster flask of fragrant oil,
[38] and stood at His feet behind Him weeping; and she began to wash His feet with her tears, and wiped them with the hair of her head; and she kissed His feet and anointed them with the fragrant oil.
[39] Now when the Pharisee who had invited Him saw this, he spoke to himself, saying, "This man, if He were a prophet, would know who and what manner of woman this is who is touching Him, for she is a sinner."
[40] And Jesus answered and said to him, "Simon, I have something to say to you." So he said, "Teacher, say it."
[41] "There was a certain creditor who had two debtors. one owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty.
[42] "And when they had nothing with which to repay, he freely forgave them both. Tell Me, therefore, which of them will love him more?"
[43] Simon answered and said, "I suppose the one whom he forgave more." And He said to him, "You have rightly judged."
[44] Then He turned to the woman and said to Simon, "Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave Me no water for My feet, but she has washed My feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head.
[45] "You gave Me no kiss, but this woman has not ceased to kiss My feet since the time I came in.
[46] "You did not anoint My head with oil, but this woman has anointed My feet with fragrant oil.
[47] "Therefore I say to you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven, for she loved much. But to whom little is forgiven, the same loves little."
[48] Then He said to her, "Your sins are forgiven."
[49] And those who sat at the table with Him began to say to themselves, "Who is this who even forgives sins?"

| 아름다운 흉터 |

| 그의 많은 죄가 사하여졌도다 이는 그의 사랑함이 많음이라 - 누가복음 7:47 |
몇 년 전 나는 새몬강을 따라 걷다가 껍질의 일부가 벗겨진 소나무 숲을 지나게 되었습니다. 오래전 이곳에서 사냥했던 미국 원주민들이 씹는 껌을 얻기 위해 나무껍질을 벗기고 껍질 바로 밑에 있는 층을 채취했었다는 사실을 산림관인 친구가 말해주어 알고 있었습니다. 흉하게 남아있는 상처들도 있었지만, 어떤 상처들은 결정화된 수액으로 채워진 후 풍상을 겪으면서 갈고 닦여 보기 드문 아름다운 무늬로 변형되었습니다.
우리의 죄도 마찬가지입니다. 우리에게는 과거의 죄 때문에 상처가 남아있을 수 있습니다. 하지만 뉘우치고 용서받기 위해 예수님 앞에 놓인 죄들은 아름다운 흉터를 남길 수 있습니다.
죄의 쓴맛을 본 사람들은 이제 죄를 혐오합니다. 이들은 악을 미워하고 의를 사랑합니다. 이들의 죄가 남긴 흉터를 거룩하므로 아름답습니다. 자신이 부족하다는 것을 아는 사람들은(롬 3:23), 다른 사람들을 향해 부드러운 마음을 가집니다. 그들은 다른 사람들의 실패를 이해하고 동정하며 친절한 마음으로 대합니다. 그들의 죄가 남긴 흔적은 겸허함의 아름다움입니다.
마지막으로, 죄의 행위가 값없이, 그리고 완전히 용서되었을 때, 그것은 자비를 베푸신 주님께로 우리를 더욱 친밀하게 이끌어줍니다. 이런 죄인들은 많은 죄를 용서받았기 때문에 더 많이 사랑합니다(눅 7:47). 이들의 죄가 남긴 흉터는 사랑이므로 아름답습니다. |

누가복음 7:36-49
[36] 한 바리새인이 예수께 자기와 함께 잡수기를 청하니 이에 바리새인의 집에 들어가 앉으셨을 때에

[37] 그 동네에 죄인인 한 여자가 있어 예수께서 바리새인의 집에 앉으셨음을 알고 향유 담은 옥합을 가지고 와서

[38] 예수의 뒤로 그 발 곁에 서서 울며 눈물로 그 발을 적시고 자기 머리털로 씻고 그 발에 입맞추고 향유를 부으니

[39] 예수를 청한 바리새인이 이것을 보고 마음에 이르되 이 사람이 만일 선지자더면 자기를 만지는 이 여자가 누구며 어떠한 자 곧 죄인인 줄을 알았으리라 하거늘

[40] 예수께서 대답하여 가라사대 시몬아 내가 네게 이를 말이 있다 하시니 저가 가로되 선생님 말씀하소서

[41] 가라사대 빚 주는 사람에게 빚진 자가 둘이 있어 하나는 오백 데나리온을 졌고 하나는 오십 데나리온을 졌는데
[42] 갚을 것이 없으므로 둘 다 탕감하여 주었으니 둘 중에 누가 저를 더 사랑하겠느냐

[43] 시몬이 대답하여 가로되 제 생각에는 많이 탕감함을 받은 자니이다 가라사대 네 판단이 옳다 하시고
.
[44] 여자를 돌아보시며 시몬에게 이르시되 이 여자를 보느냐 내가 네 집에 들어오매 너는 내게 발 씻을 물도 주지 아니하였으되 이 여자는 눈물로 내 발을 적시고 그 머리털로 씻었으며

[45] 너는 내게 입맞추지 아니하였으되 저는 내가 들어올 때로부터 내 발에 입맞추기를 그치지 아니하였으며
[46] 너는 내 머리에 감람유도 붓지 아니하였으되 저는 향유를 내 발에 부었느니라
[47] 이러므로 내가 네게 말하노니 저의 많은 죄가 사하여졌도다 이는 저의 사랑함이 많음이라 사함을 받은 일이 적은 자는 적게 사랑하느니라
[48] 이에 여자에게 이르시되 네 죄사함을 얻었느니라 하시니
[49] 함께 앉은 자들이 속으로 말하되 이가 누구이기에 죄도 사하는가 하더라 | |
