| Getting It Right on The Inside |

| Then the Lord said, “Is it right for you to be angry?” — Jonah 4:4 |
I love the story of Jonah! It’s full of drama and important life lessons. After stubbornly refusing to do God’s will, Jonah finally preached a revival service in Nineveh that would have made him one of the most successful missionaries of his time. When the people repented and turned from their wicked ways—and when God relented and turned from His anger against them—you would have expected Jonah to rejoice. Instead, he was angry that God was merciful. Why? Although he was finally obeying God by doing the right thing in the right place, he was deeply flawed on the inside.
Like Jonah, if we are not careful, we can be spiritually “looking good” on the outside, but far from God in our hearts. He is most interested in what we are like on the inside. His Word is “sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit” (Heb. 4:12). With it, He performs divine surgery to remove the greed, dishonesty, hatred, pride, and selfishness that live in the deep shadows of our hearts.
So the next time the Holy Spirit convicts you and asks you about your bad attitude (see Jonah 4:4)—listen carefully. Surrender and let Him change you from the inside out. |

Jonah 4:1-11
[1] But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he became angry.
[2] So he prayed to the LORD, and said, "Ah, LORD, was not this what I said when I was still in my country? Therefore I fled previously to Tarshish; for I know that You are a gracious and merciful God, slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness, one who relents from doing harm.
[3] "Therefore now, O LORD, please take my life from me, for it is better for me to die than to live!"
[4] Then the LORD said, "Is it right for you to be angry?"
[5] So Jonah went out of the city and sat on the east side of the city. There he made himself a shelter and sat under it in the shade, till he might see what would become of the city.
[6] And the LORD God prepared a plant and made it come up over Jonah, that it might be shade for his head to deliver him from his misery. So Jonah was very grateful for the plant.
[7] But as morning dawned the next day God prepared a worm, and it so damaged the plant that it withered.
[8] And it happened, when the sun arose, that God prepared a vehement east wind; and the sun beat on Jonah's head, so that he grew faint. Then he wished death for himself, and said, "It is better for me to die than to live."
[9] Then God said to Jonah, "Is it right for you to be angry about the plant?" And he said, "It is right for me to be angry, even to death!"
[10] But the LORD said, "You have had pity on the plant for which you have not labored, nor made it grow, which came up in a night and perished in a night.
[11] "And should I not pity Nineveh, that great city, in which are more than one hundred and twenty thousand persons who cannot discern between their right hand and their left--and also much livestock?" | |

속사람을 바르게 |

| 여호와께서 이르시되 네가 성내는 것이 옳으냐 하시니라 - 요나 4:4 |
나는 요나 이야기를 좋아합니다! 극적인 사건이 많고, 중요한 인생의 교훈들도 있습니다. 요나는 하나님의 뜻을 고집스럽게 거부하다가, 결국 니느웨에서 회복의 메시지를 전했는데, 그것이 요나를 그 시대에 가장 성공적인 선교사 중 한 명으로 만들었습니다. 사람들이 회개하고 악한 길에서 돌아섰을 때, 그리고 하나님이 측은히 여겨 그들에게 향한 분노를 그치셨을 때 우리는 요나도 기뻐했으리라 기대할 수 있습니다. 그러나 그는 오히려 하나님의 자비하심에 화가 났습니다. 왜냐고요? 그는 하라는 곳에서 하라는 일을 함으로써 마침내 하나님께 순종하기는 했지만, 그의 내면에는 깊은 결함이 있었습니다.
우리도 조심하지 않으면, 요나처럼 겉으로는 영적으로 “멀쩡해 보이면서도” 마음으로는 하나님으로부터 멀리 떨어질 수 있습니다. 하나님은 우리의 속이 어떤지에 대해 가장 관심이 많으십니다. 하나님의 말씀은 “살아 있고 활력이 있어 좌우에 날선 어떤 검보다도 예리하여 혼과 영과 및 관절과 골수를 찔러 쪼개기까지 하며 또 마음의 생각과 뜻을 판단”(히 4:12)합니다. 하나님은 그 말씀으로 우리의 마음 속 깊은 어두움 가운데 살아 있는 탐욕, 부정직, 증오, 자만, 이기심을 제거하는 거룩한 수술을 행하십니다.
그러므로 다음에 성령님이 당신의 악한 행위에 대해 지적하고 물으시면(욘 4:4 참조), 주의하여 들으십시오. 성령님께 순종하여 그분이 당신의 속사람부터 바꾸도록 하십시오. |

하나님아버지, 내 속사람이 불순종하는 것은 놔두고 겉으로
순종하는 데에 더 관심이 있었던 것을 고백합니다.
다른 사람들에게 잘 보이고 싶어 하는 나를 용서해주시고,
나를 바꾸셔서 내 속사람을 순수하게 만들어주소서. |

요나 4:1-11
[1] 요나가 매우 싫어하고 성내며
[2] 여호와께 기도하여 이르되 여호와여 내가 고국에 있을 때에 이러하겠다고 말씀하지 아니하였나이까 그러므로 내가 빨리 다시스로 도망하였사오니 주께서는 은혜로우시며 자비로우시며 노하기를 더디하시며 인애가 크시사 뜻을 돌이켜 재앙을 내리지 아니하시는 하나님이신 줄을 내가 알았음이니이다
[3] 여호와여 원하건대 이제 내 생명을 거두어 가소서 사는 것보다 죽는 것이 내게 나음이니이다 하니
[4] 여호와께서 이르시되 네가 성내는 것이 옳으냐 하시니라
[5] 요나가 성읍에서 나가서 그 성읍 동쪽에 앉아 거기서 자기를 위하여 초막을 짓고 그 성읍에 무슨 일이 일어나는가를 보려고 그 그늘 아래에 앉았더라
[6] 하나님 여호와께서 박넝쿨을 예비하사 요나를 가리게 하셨으니 이는 그의 머리를 위하여 그늘이 지게 하며 그의 괴로움을 면하게 하려 하심이었더라 요나가 박넝쿨로 말미암아 크게 기뻐하였더니
[7] 하나님이 벌레를 예비하사 이튿날 새벽에 그 박넝쿨을 갉아먹게 하시매 시드니라
[8] 해가 뜰 때에 하나님이 뜨거운 동풍을 예비하셨고 해는 요나의 머리에 쪼이매 요나가 혼미하여 스스로 죽기를 구하여 이르되 사는 것보다 죽는 것이 내게 나으니이다 하니라
[9] 하나님이 요나에게 이르시되 네가 이 박넝쿨로 말미암아 성내는 것이 어찌 옳으냐 하시니 그가 대답하되 내가 성내어 죽기까지 할지라도 옳으니이다 하니라
[10] 여호와께서 이르시되 네가 수고도 아니하였고 재배도 아니하였고 하룻밤에 났다가 하룻밤에 말라 버린 이 박넝쿨을 아꼈거든
[11] 하물며 이 큰 성읍 니느웨에는 좌우를 분변하지 못하는 자가 십 이만여 명이요 가축도 많이 있나니 내가 어찌 아끼지 아니하겠느냐 하시니라 | |
