고호가 "별이 빛나는 밤"을 그린 것은 죽기 1년 전인 1889년 6월 무렵인데,

고갱과의 불화로 귀를 자르는 자해사건이 있고 난 뒤 프랑스 생 레미 정신병원에서 였답니다.

당시 고흐는 동생 테오에게 편지로...

'나는 별을 보면 항상 꿈을 꾼단다. 왜 우리는 별에 더 가까이 갈 수 없을까?
살아서는 별들에 가까이 갈 수 없다.
살아있는 동안에는 별에 갈 수 없으므로 죽음이 우리를 별까지 데려다주는 수단이다.'

The Starry Night (Dutch: De sterrennacht) is a painting by the Dutch post impressionist artist Vincent van Gogh. The painting depicts the view outside his sanitorium room window at Saint-Remy-de-Provence(located in southern France) at night, although it was painted from memory during the day. It has been in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, part of the Lillie P. Bliss Bequest, since 1941. one of Van Gogh's most popular pieces, the painting is widely hailed as his Magum opus.  <Wikipedia>

 

 

Vincent Willem van Gogh (1853-1890)   네델란드의 후기 인상파(Post-impressionism)화가 빈센트 반 고흐(Vincent van Gogh /1853-1890)를 소재로 한 노래.   고흐는 오늘날 많은 사람들의 사랑을 받고있는 화가지만 생전에는 아무에게도 인정받지 못하고 비참한 생활을 하였으며, 그의 동생 테오(Theo)만이 형의 천재성을 이해하였을 뿐이었다. 고흐는 자신의 예술이 이해받지 못하는 고통 때문에 정신 병원 신세를 지고 그의 말년엔 정신병이 발작하여 귀를 자르고 끝내는 권총으로 자신의 목숨을 끊고 만다. 그때 그의 나이 겨우 37세. 이 노래의 작곡자가 누구인지는 확실하지 않으나, 동생 테오가 형을 그리워하며 부르는 노래처럼 들린다. 이 노래의 또 다른 제목은 별이 빛나는 밤 / 별이 많은 밤(The Starry Night - 맨 위의 그림)인데 그것은 고흐가 죽기 1년 전인 1889년에 그린 유명한 그림의 제목이기도 하다.

'Starry Night Over the Rhone'  by Vincent van Gogh

Starry Night Over the Rhone (September 1888) is one of Vincent van Gogh's paintings of Arles at night; it was painted at a spot on the river bank that was only a minute or two's walk from the Yellow House on the Place Lamartine which Van Gogh was renting at the time. The night sky and the effects of light at night provided the subject for some of his more famous paintings, including Cafe Terrace at Night (painted earlier the same month) and the later canvas from Saint-Rémy, The Starry Night.   <Wikipedia>
