청춘/Samuel Ullman and "Youth": The Life, the Legacy

청춘이란 인생의 어떤 기간이 아니라 마음가짐을 말한다.

장밋빛 볼, 붉은 입술, 나긋나긋한 손발이 아니라
씩씩한 의지, 풍부한 상상력, 불타오르는 열정,

그리고 인생의 깊은 샘에서 솟아나는 청신함을 말한다.

 청춘이란 두려움을 물리치는 용기,

안이함에의 집착을 뿌리치는 모험심을 뜻하기에

때로는 스무살 청년보다 예순살 노인에게 청춘이 있다.

나이를 더해가는 것만으로 사람은 늙는 것이 아니라
이상을 잃어버릴 때 비로소 늙는다.

  

세월은 피부에 주름살을 늘려가지만

열정을 잃으면 영혼은 주름지고 근심, 두려움,

자신감 상실은 기백을 죽이고 정신을 시들게 하는 것이다.

 

70세든 16세든 인간의 가슴에는 놀라움에 이끌리는 마음,
어린애와 같은 미지에 대한 탐구심,

인생에 대한 흥미와 환희가 있다.

 

그대에게도 나에게도 눈에 보이지 않는마음의 우체국이 있어

아름다움, 희망, 기쁨, 용기, 영원에서 오는 힘의 메시지

이 모든 것을 받고 간직하는 한 그대는 언제까지나 젊다.

영감이 끊기고, 정신이 냉소의 눈에 덮이고,

비탄의 얼음에 갇혀질 때 비록 20세라도 이미 늙은이다.

머리를 높이 치켜들고 희망의 물결을 붙잡는 한

여든살의 나이로도 그대는 청춘으로 남는다.

Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind; it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees; it is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life.

Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity of the appetite, for adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of sixty more than a boy of twenty. Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals.

Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust.

Whether sixty or sixteen, there is in every human being's heart the lure of wonder, the unfailing child-like appetite of what's next, and the joy of the game of living. In the center of your heart and my heart there is a wireless station; so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, cheer, courage and power from men and from the infinite, so long are you young.

사무엘 울만은,

독일에서 유태인으로 태어나 幼年期 를 보낸후 
부모를따라 미국으로 이민해, 
시의회 의원 , 회사 사장, 교육위원, 평신도 율법사, 등으로

 情熱 적인 삶을 살았다고한다. 

'靑春'은 작가가 생활했던 미국보다, 
일본에서 더 알려졌는데, 
이를 일본인들에게 전파한 사람은 맥아더 장군 이었다고한다.

 

맥아더 장군은 1945년 일본 주둔군 사령관으로 있으면서, 
자기 사무실 벽에 이 詩 를 걸어놓았으며, 
퇴역후 미국 각지역에, 초청 연설을 하면서, 
이 詩를 인용하곤 했다고한다. 

 

울만의 詩 는 특히 
전후 일본인 기업인 사이에서 큰 사랑을 받았다. 
마쓰시타 고노스케는 칠십의 나이에 , 
새로운 사업을 창업하면서, 
"靑春"을 외우며 영감과 격려를 얻었다고 하니, 

패전후 경제복구를 하는 일본인 들에게 
활력소와 같은 구실을 한 것으로 보인다.

 

靑春은 삶을 살아가면서 자칫 나약해지고 
실의에 빠지기 쉬운 우리에게 希望과 勇氣, 
그리고 熱情 과 冒險心을 자극해준다.
