After conducting a series of interviews with elderly people, author Don Gold published the book Until the Singing Stops: A Celebration of Life and Old Age in America.
Gold loved and admired his grandmother, and it was the memory of her that moved him to meet and learn from other elderly people. He recalls that on the way to one of his interviews, he got lost on a dusty country road in Missouri. When he pulled into a farm to ask for directions, a teenager came up, listened, shrugged his shoulders, and then replied, “Don’t know.” So he drove on. A few miles farther down the road, he stopped again at a farmhouse. The farmer, who was an old man, graciously gave him flawless directions.
Perhaps, Gold mused, that experience sums up what he was searching for when the memory of his grandmother sent him out to fi-nd people like her. He was looking for someone to guide him in his life journey.
If you’re “young,” seek out older people who have been drinking deeply from God’s love and goodness throughout their life. They have wisdom to share that will help you so that you also might flourish and grow in your faith (Ps. 92:12-14). - David Roper |
Psalm 92:1-15
[1] A Psalm. A Song for the Sabbath day. It is good to give thanks to the LORD, And to sing praises to Your name, O Most High;
[2] To declare Your lovingkindness in the morning, And Your faithfulness every night,
[3] on an instrument of ten strings, on the lute, And on the harp, With harmonious sound.
[4] For You, LORD, have made me glad through Your work; I will triumph in the works of Your hands.
[5] O LORD, how great are Your works! Your thoughts are very deep.
[6] A senseless man does not know, Nor does a fool understand this.
[7] When the wicked spring up like grass, And when all the workers of iniquity flourish, It is that they may be destroyed forever.
[8] But You, LORD, are on high forevermore.
[9] For behold, Your enemies, O LORD, For behold, Your enemies shall perish; All the workers of iniquity shall be scattered.
[10] But my horn You have exalted like a wild ox; I have been anointed with fresh oil.
[11] My eye also has seen my desire on my enemies; My ears hear my desire on the wicked Who rise up against me.
[12] The righteous shall flourish like a palm tree, He shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon.
[13] Those who are planted in the house of the LORD Shall flourish in the courts of our God.

작가 돈 골드는 노인들과 나눈 많은 대화를 바탕으로 「노래가 끝날 때까지: 미국에서의 노년의 삶을 축하하기」라는 책을 썼습니다.
골드는 자기 할머니를 사랑하고 존경했었는데, 바로 그 할머니에 대한 기억이 그로 하여금 다른 노인들을 만나 그들로부터 배움을 얻게 했습니다. 그는 인터뷰를 하러 가던 도중 미주리 주의 어느 먼지 나는 시골길에서 길을 잃었던 때를 회상합니다. 한 농장에 들어가 길을 묻자 한 십대 소년이 다가와 듣고는 건성으로 “모르겠는데요.”라고 대답하였습니다. 계속 운전하여 몇 킬로미터 떨어진 어느 한 농가에 다시 멈추자 노령의 농부가 정확한 방향을 친절하게 알려주었습니다.
할머니에 대한 기억 때문에 할머니 같은 사람들을 찾아 나섰던 골드는 이 경험이이야말로 그가 찾고 있었던 것을 명확히 정리해주는 것이 아닐까 생각했습니다. 그는 그의 인생 여정에서 그를 인도해줄 누군가를 찾고 있었던 것입니다.
만약 당신이 “젊은이”라면 하나님의 사랑과 선하심을 평생토록 깊이 맛본 노인들을 찾으십시오. 그들이 나누어주는 지혜는 당신의 믿음이 번성하고 성장할 수 있도록 도와줄 것입니다(시 92:12-14). |
