| Heavenly Exclamation! |

In August 2011, NASA released a composite image from the Hubble telescope that left people smiling. The image is of two galaxies beginning to collide. The collision looks like a heavenly exclamation point (!). The latest statistic I’ve read says there are about 100 billion observable galaxies in the universe. Each galaxy has hundreds of billions of stars, and more galaxies are being discovered.
When I saw the exclamation-point image on CNN, I was reminded of our awesome Creator. The heavens exclaim His glory (Ps. 19:1), but He is even greater than the heavens He has made. After Solomon built a temple for the Lord’s presence to dwell in, he prayed: “But will God indeed dwell on the earth? Behold, heaven and the heaven of heavens cannot contain You. How much less this temple which I have built!” (1 Kings 8:27). He knew that if the heavens couldn’t contain God’s presence, the temple he had made surely couldn’t contain Him.
The Lord is so much greater than our finite minds can grasp. Yet He has made it possible for us to know Him through His Son Jesus whom He sent to live on this earth, to die for us, and to be raised. When we believe in Him, our lives join the heavens in proclaiming His glory! |

1 Kings 8:22-30
[22] Then Solomon stood before the altar of the LORD in the presence of all the assembly of Israel, and spread out his hands toward heaven;
[23] and he said: "LORD God of Israel, there is no God in heaven above or on earth below like You, who keep Your covenant and mercy with Your servants who walk before You with all their hearts.
[24] "You have kept what You promised Your servant David my father; You have both spoken with Your mouth and fulfilled it with Your hand, as it is this day.
[25] "Therefore, LORD God of Israel, now keep what You promised Your servant David my father, saying, 'You shall not fail to have a man sit before Me on the throne of Israel, only if your sons take heed to their way, that they walk before Me as you have walked before Me.'
[26] "And now I pray, O God of Israel, let Your word come true, which You have spoken to Your servant David my father.
[27] "But will God indeed dwell on the earth? Behold, heaven and the heaven of heavens cannot contain You. How much less this temple which I have built!
[28] "Yet regard the prayer of Your servant and his supplication, O LORD my God, and listen to the cry and the prayer which Your servant is praying before You today:
[29] "that Your eyes may be open toward this temple night and day, toward the place of which You said, 'My name shall be there,' that You may hear the prayer which Your servant makes toward this place.
[30] "And may You hear the supplication of Your servant and of Your people Israel, when they pray toward this place. Hear in heaven Your dwelling place; and when You hear, forgive. | |

2011년 8월 미국항공우주국이 허블망원경으로 찍어서 합성한 한 장의 사진을 보고 사람들은 미소를 지었습니다. 두 개의 은하계가 막 충돌하고 있는 모습의 사진이었는데, 그 충돌하는 모습이 마치 천상의 느낌표(!)와 같이 보였습니다. 내가 읽은 가장 최근의 통계에 의하면 우주에는 약 천억 개의 은하계가 있고, 각 은하계 안에 수천억 개의 별이 있으며, 지금도 더 많은 은하계가 계속 발견되고 있다고 합니다.
CNN뉴스에서 이 느낌표 모양의 사진을 보면서 나는 놀라우신 우리 창조주 하나님을 기억했습니다. 하늘이 하나님의 영광을 선포하고 있습니다(시 19:1). 하지만 하나님은 자신이 창조하신 우주보다 더 광대하십니다. 솔로몬은 하나님이 임재하실 성전을 건축한 후에 이렇게 기도했습니다. “하나님이 참으로 땅에 거하시리이까 하늘과 하늘들의 하늘이라도 주를 용납하지 못하겠거든 하물며 내가 건축한 이 성전이오리이까”(왕상 8:27). 광활한 하늘도 하나님을 모시기에 부족할 터인데 그가 지은 성전으로는 당연히 그분을 모실 수 없다는 것을 그는 알았습니다.
하나님은 우리의 유한한 마음으로 헤아리기엔 너무 광대하십니다. 그러나 하나님은 그분의 아들이신 예수님을 통하여 우리가 하나님을 알게 해주셨습니다. 하나님은 예수님을 이 땅에 보내 살게 하시고, 우리를 위해 돌아가시고, 다시 부활하시게 하셨습니다. 우리가 하나님을 믿을 때, 우리의 삶은 그분의 영광을 선포하는 하늘나라에 속하게 됩니다! |

열왕기상 8:22-30
[22] 솔로몬이 여호와의 제단 앞에서 이스라엘의 온 회중과 마주서서 하늘을 향하여 손을 펴고
[23] 이르되 이스라엘의 하나님 여호와여 위로 하늘과 아래로 땅에 주와 같은 신이 없나이다 주께서는 온 마음으로 주의 앞에서 행하는 종들에게 언약을 지키시고 은혜를 베푸시나이다
[24] 주께서 주의 종 내 아버지 다윗에게 하신 말씀을 지키사 주의 입으로 말씀하신 것을 손으로 이루심이 오늘과 같으니이다
[25] 이스라엘의 하나님 여호와여 주께서 주의 종 내 아버지 다윗에게 말씀하시기를 네 자손이 자기 길을 삼가서 네가 내 앞에서 행한 것 같이 내 앞에서 행하기만 하면 네게서 이스라엘의 왕위에 앉을 사람이 내 앞에서 끊어지지 아니하리라 하셨사오니 이제 다윗을 위하여 그 하신 말씀을 지키시옵소서

[28] 그러나 내 하나님 여호와여 주의 종의 기도와 간구를 돌아보시며 이 종이 오늘 주 앞에서 부르짖음과 비는 기도를 들으시옵소서
[29] 주께서 전에 말씀하시기를 내 이름이 거기 있으리라 하신 곳 이 성전을 향하여 주의 눈이 주야로 보시오며 주의 종이 이 곳을 향하여 비는 기도를 들으시옵소서
