Bill was a friend of mine in semi- nary who had come to Christ out of a blatantly sinful lifestyle. He described it this way: “I was driving down the street drinking a bottle of brandy with another man’s wife at my side. When I saw some Christians on the sidewalk witnessing to passersby about Christ, I drove by and shouted, ‘Fools!’ But only a few weeks later I found myself kneeling in a church and asking Christ to become my Savior and Lord.” Bill’s conversion resulted in his giving up his old ways and experiencing a new life in Christ. It was a life-changing turnaround.
True repentance, which is initiated by the Holy Spirit, includes a real turnaround. Often we see that the greater the opposition to the gospel prior to conversion, the more stunning the change of direction afterward. When Saul of Tarsus encountered Christ on the road to Damascus, he was changed from a persecutor to a preacher of the gospel. Of this many observed: “He who formerly persecuted us now preaches the faith which he once tried to destroy”(Gal.1:23).
Authentic conversion includes repentance, which is a change of mind and direction. For the follower of Christ, repentance means to keep turning away from sin and turning toward Christ in obedience. |

Galatians 1:11-24
[11] But I make known to you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached by me is not according to man.
[12] For I neither received it from man, nor was I taught it, but it came through the revelation of Jesus Christ.
[13] For you have heard of my former conduct in Judaism, how I persecuted the church of God beyond measure and tried to destroy it.
[14] And I advanced in Judaism beyond many of my contemporaries in my own nation, being more exceedingly zealous for the traditions of my fathers.
[15] But when it pleased God, who separated me from my mother's womb and called me through His grace,
[16] to reveal His Son in me, that I might preach Him among the Gentiles, I did not immediately confer with flesh and blood,
[17] nor did I go up to Jerusalem to those who were apostles before me; but I went to Arabia, and returned again to Damascus.
[18] Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to see Peter, and remained with him fifteen days.
[19] But I saw none of the other apostles except James, the Lord's brother.
[20] (Now concerning the things which I write to you, indeed, before God, I do not lie.)
[21] Afterward I went into the regions of Syria and Cilicia.
[22] And I was unknown by face to the churches of Judea which were in Christ.
[23] But they were hearing only, "He who formerly persecuted us now preaches the faith which he once tried to destroy."

빌은 이전에 죄악으로 가득찬 뻔뻔스러운 삶에서 그리스도께 온 내 신학대학 친구입니다. 그는 그것을 이렇게 설명했습니다. “나는 유부녀를 내 옆에 태우고 브랜디를 병째 마시며 거리를 운전하면서 다녔지. 그리스도인들이 보도에서 지나가는 사람들에게 그리스도를 전하는 것을 보면 나는 ‘바보들!’이라고 소리치며 지나쳤어. 그런데 불과 몇 주 후에 나 자신이 교회 안에서 무릎을 꿇고 그리스도께 내 구주와 주님이 되어 달라고 기도하게 된 거야.” 빌의 회심은 그가 예전의 생활을 버리고 그리스도 안에서 새로운 삶을 경험하도록 하였습니다. 그것은 180도 인생역전이었습니다.
성령에 의해서 시작된 진정한 회개는 완전한 변화를 가져옵니다. 심하게 복음에 반대하던 사람일수록 회심 후의 삶이 더욱 눈에 띄게 변화되는 것을 우리는 봅니다. 다소 사람 사울도 다메섹 도상에서 그리스도를 만난 후 박해자에게 복음전도자로 변했습니다. “우리를 박해하던 자가 전에 멸하려던 그 믿음을 지금 전하는”(갈 1:23) 것을 많은 사람들이 보게 되었습니다.
진정한 회심에는 마음을 새롭게 하고 방향을 바꾸는 회개가 있습니다. 그리스도를 따르는 자들에게 회개란 계속해서 죄에서 돌아서서 그리스도께로 순종하며 돌아가는 것입니다. |
갈라디아서 1:11-24
[11] 형제들아 내가 너희에게 알게 하노니 내가 전한 복음은 사람의 뜻을 따라 된 것이 아니니라
[12] 이는 내가 사람에게서 받은 것도 아니요 배운 것도 아니요 오직 예수 그리스도의 계시로 말미암은 것이라
[13] 내가 이전에 유대교에 있을 때에 행한 일을 너희가 들었거니와 하나님의 교회를 심히 박해하여 멸하고
[14] 내가 내 동족 중 여러 연갑자보다 유대교를 지나치게 믿어 내 조상의 전통에 대하여 더욱 열심이 있었으나
[15] 그러나 내 어머니의 태로부터 나를 택정하시고 그의 은혜로 나를 부르신 이가
[16] 그의 아들을 이방에 전하기 위하여 그를 내 속에 나타내시기를 기뻐하셨을 때에 내가 곧 혈육과 의논하지 아니하고
[17] 또 나보다 먼저 사도 된 자들을 만나려고 예루살렘으로 가지 아니하고 오직 아라비아로 갔다가 다시 다메섹으로 돌아갔노라
[18] 그 후 삼 년 만에 내가 게바를 방문하려고 예루살렘에 올라가서 그와 함께 십오 일을 머무는 동안
[19] 주의 형제 야고보 외에 다른 사도들을 보지 못하였노라
[20] 보라 내가 너희에게 쓰는 것은 하나님 앞에서 거짓말이 아니로다
[21] 그 후에 내가 수리아와 길리기아 지방에 이르렀으나
[22] 그리스도 안에 있는 유대의 교회들이 나를 얼굴로는 알지 못하고
[23] 다만 우리를 박해하던 자가 전에 멸하려던 그 믿음을 지금 전한다 함을 듣고
