| A Unique Choir |

| That you may with one mind and one mouth glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. — Romans 15:6 |
When Mitch Miller died in July 2010, most people remembered him as the man who invited everyone to sing along. on his popular 1960s TV program Sing Along with Mitch, an all-male chorus sang well-loved songs while the words appeared on the screen so viewers could join in. A Los Angeles Times obituary cited Miller’s belief that one reason for the program’s success was the appeal of his chorus: “I always made a point of hiring singers who were tall, short, bald, round, fat, whatever—everyday-looking guys.” From that unified diversity came beautiful music in which everyone was invited to participate.
In Romans 15, Paul called for unity among the followers of Christ—“that you may with one mind and one mouth glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ” (v.6). From several Old Testament passages, he spoke of Gentiles and Jews together singing praise to God (vv.9-12). A unity that had been considered impossible became reality as people who had been deeply divided began thanking God together for His mercy shown in Christ. Like them, we are filled with joy, peace, and hope “by the power of the Holy Spirit” (v.13).
What a unique “choir” we belong to, and what a privilege it is to sing along! |

Romans 15:5-13
[5] Now may the God of patience and comfort grant you to be like-minded toward one another, according to Christ Jesus,
[6] that you may with one mind and one mouth glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
[7] Therefore receive one another, just as Christ also received us, to the glory of God.
[8] Now I say that Jesus Christ has become a servant to the circumcision for the truth of God, to confirm the promises made to the fathers,
[9] and that the Gentiles might glorify God for His mercy, as it is written: "For this reason I will confess to You among the Gentiles, And sing to Your name."
[10] And again he says: "Rejoice, O Gentiles, with His people!"
[11] And again: "Praise the LORD, all you Gentiles! Laud Him, all you peoples!"
[12] And again, Isaiah says: "There shall be a root of Jesse; And He who shall rise to reign over the Gentiles, In Him the Gentiles shall hope."
[13] Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. | |

2010년 7월 미취 밀러가 죽었을 때, 많은 사람들은 그를 누구든지 함께 노래 부르자고 초대했던 사람으로 기억하였습니다. 그가 진행한 ‘미취와 함께 노래를’이라는 1960년대 인기 TV 프로그램은 남성합창단이 인기곡을 노래할 때 그 노래의 가사를 화면에 띠워 시청자들도 함께 따라 부를 수 있었습니다. 로스앤젤레스타임스는 추모 기사에서 “나는 항상, 키가 크든 작든 대머리든 통통하든 뚱뚱하든 어떻든 간에, 우리가 일상에서 흔히 보는 보통남자들을 합창단원으로 뽑으려고 했습니다.”라는 밀러의 신념을 인용하면서, 합창단이 지닌 매력이 프로그램이 성공할 수 있었던 이유 중 하나였다고 했습니다. 다양함이 하나로 어우러진 아름다운 음악 속으로 모든 사람들이 같이 어울리도록 이끌었던 것입니다.
로마서 15장에서 바울은 “한 마음과 한 입으로 하나님 곧 우리 주 예수 그리스도의 아버지께 영광을 돌리게 하려 하노라”(6절)라고 하며 그리스도를 따르는 사람들끼리 서로 화합할 것을 촉구하였습니다. 그는 구약성경의 몇 구절을 인용하며, 이방인과 유대인이 함께 하나님을 찬양하는 모습을 언급했습니다(9-12절). 심하게 분열되었던 사람들이 그리스도가 보여주신 하나님의 자비를 보며 하나님께 함께 감사하기 시작하면서, 불가능한 것처럼 보였던 화합이 현실로 나타났습니다. 그들처럼 우리도 “성령의 능력으로”(13절) 기쁨과 평강과 소망으로 충만해집니다.
우리가 얼마나 특별한 “합창단”에 속해 있으며, 또 거기서 함께 노래한다는 것이 얼마나 큰 특권인지요! |
