The idea of always being prepared makes me think of the man who lived next door to us when I was growing up. When Mr. Nienhuis came home, he never failed to back his car into the garage. That seemed unusual to me until my mother explained that Nels was a volunteer fireman. If he got a call, he had to be ready to race to the fire station. He backed in so he could leave quickly when he had to report for duty.
To be well prepared is important in so much of life. “If I had 8 hours to chop down a tree, I’d spend 6 sharpening my axe,” said Abraham Lincoln. We prepare for a career by studying. We buy insurance in case of a car accident or a house fire. We even prepare for the end of life by making a will to provide for loved ones.
The Bible tells us we must prepare ourselves spiritually as well. We do that by putting on spiritual armor to protect ourselves from spiritual attack (Eph. 6:10-20); by preparing our minds for holy living (1 Peter 1:13); by making sure we’re always prepared to answer questions about the reason for the hope we possess (3:15); and by ensuring that we are ready for the promised return of Jesus (Matt. 24:44).

Ephesians 6:10-20
[10] Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.
[11] Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
[12] For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.
[13] Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
[14] Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness,
[15] and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace;
[16] above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.
[17] And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;
[18] praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints--
[19] and for me, that utterance may be given to me, that I may open my mouth boldly to make known the mystery of the gospel,
[20] for which I am an ambassador in chains; that in it I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak. | |

언제나 준비되어 있어야 한다는 생각이 들 때 마다 생각나는 사람이 있습니다. 그는 내가 자랄 때 우리 옆집에 살던 남자입니다. 니엔후이스 씨는 집에 오면 항상 차를 후진하여 차고에 주차시켰습니다. 그가 자원봉사 소방관이라는 사실을 어머니가 설명해주기 전까지, 그 일은 내게 이상하게 보였습니다. 그는 비상전화를 받으면 소방서로 바로 달려갈 준비가 되어있어야 했습니다. 임무를 수행해야 할 때 재빨리 나갈 수 있도록 후진 주차를 해두었던 것입니다.
준비가 잘 되어 있다는 것은 인생 전반에 걸쳐 매우 중요합니다. 아브라함 링컨은 “만일 내게 나무를 베는데 8시간이 주어진다면, 나는 도끼날을 세우는데 6시간을 쓰겠다.”라고 말했습니다. 우리는 공부하면서 사회생활을 준비하고, 보험에 들어 차 사고나 집에 불이 날 경우를 대비합니다. 그리고 사랑하는 사람들에게 남길 유서를 만들며 죽음을 준비하기도 합니다.
성경은 우리에게 영적으로도 준비해야 한다고 말합니다. 우리는 다음과 같이 함으로써 영적 준비를 할 수 있습니다. 영적 공격에서 우리 자신을 보호하기 위해 영적인 갑옷을 입고(엡 6:10-20), 거룩한 삶을 위해 마음을 준비하며(벧전 1:13), 우리가 가진 소망에 대한 이유를 묻는 질문에 대답할 준비를 항상 하고(3:15), 약속된 예수님의 재림에 확실히 대비하는 것(마 24:44)입니다.

에베소서 6:10-20
[10] 끝으로 너희가 주 안에서와 그 힘의 능력으로 강건하여지고
[11] 마귀의 간계를 능히 대적하기 위하여 하나님의 전신 갑주를 입으라
[12] 우리의 씨름은 혈과 육을 상대하는 것이 아니요 통치자들과 권세들과 이 어둠의 세상 주관자들과 하늘에 있는 악의 영들을 상대함이라
[13] 그러므로 하나님의 전신 갑주를 취하라 이는 악한 날에 너희가 능히 대적하고 모든 일을 행한 후에 서기 위함이라
[14] 그런즉 서서 진리로 너희 허리띠를 띠고 의의 호심경을 붙이고
[15] 평안의 복음이 준비한 것으로 신을 신고
[16] 모든 것 위에 믿음의 방패를 가지고 이로써 능히 악한 자의 모든 불화살을 소멸하고
[17] 구원의 투구와 셩령의 검 곧 하나님의 말씀을 가지라
[18] 모든 기도와 간구를 하되 항상 성령 안에서 기도하고 이를 위하여 깨어 구하기를 항상 힘쓰며 여러 성도를 위하여 구하라
[19] 또 나를 위하여 구할 것은 내게 말씀을 주사 나로 입을 열어 복음의 비밀을 담대히 알리게 하옵소서 할 것이니
[20] 이 일을 위하여 내가 쇠사슬에 매인 사신이 된 것은 나로 이 일에 당연히 할 말을 담대히 하게 하려 하심이라 | |
