| Consider The Clouds |

| Do you know how the clouds are balanced? — Job 37:16 |
One day many years ago my boys and I were lying on our backs in the yard watching the clouds drift by. “Dad,” one asked, “why do clouds float?” “Well, son,” I began, intending to give him the benefit of my vast knowledge, but then I lapsed into silence. “I don’t know,” I admitted, “but I’ll find out for you.”
The answer, I discovered, is that condensed moisture, descending by gravity, meets warmer temperatures rising from the land. That moisture then changes into vapor and ascends back into the air. That’s a natural explanation for the phenomenon.
But natural explanations are not final answers. Clouds float because God in His wisdom has ordered the natural laws in such a way that they reveal the “wondrous works of Him who is perfect in knowledge” (Job 37:16). Clouds then can be thought of as a symbol—an outward and visible sign of God’s goodness and grace in creation.
So someday when you’re taking some time to see what images you can imagine in the clouds, remember this: The one who made all things beautiful makes the clouds float through the air. He does so to call us to wonder and adoration. The heavens—even the cumulus, stratus, and cirrus clouds—declare the glory of God. |

Job 37:1-16
[1] "At this also my heart trembles, And leaps from its place.
[2] Hear attentively the thunder of His voice, And the rumbling that comes from His mouth.
[3] He sends it forth under the whole heaven, His lightning to the ends of the earth.
[4] After it a voice roars; He thunders with His majestic voice, And He does not restrain them when His voice is heard.
[5] God thunders marvelously with His voice; He does great things which we cannot comprehend.
[6] For He says to the snow, 'Fall on the earth'; Likewise to the gentle rain and the heavy rain of His strength.
[7] He seals the hand of every man, That all men may know His work.
[8] The beasts go into dens, And remain in their lairs.
[9] From the chamber of the south comes the whirlwind, And cold from the scattering winds of the north.
[10] By the breath of God ice is given, And the broad waters are frozen.
[11] Also with moisture He saturates the thick clouds; He scatters His bright clouds.
[12] And they swirl about, being turned by His guidance, That they may do whatever He commands them on the face of the whole earth.
[13] He causes it to come, Whether for correction, Or for His land, Or for mercy.
[14] "Listen to this, O Job; Stand still and consider the wondrous works of God.
[15] Do you know when God dispatches them, And causes the light of His cloud to shine?
[16] Do you know how the clouds are balanced, Those wondrous works of Him who is perfect in knowledge? | |

여러 해 전 어느 날 나는 우리 아들들과 함께 뒤뜰에 누워 흘러가는 구름을 쳐다보고 있었습니다. 한 아이가 “아빠, 구름은 왜 떠 있는 거예요?”라고 물었습니다. 나는 내가 가진 풍부한 지식을 아들에게 이롭게 베풀겠다는 생각으로 “얘야, 그건” 하며 시작했으나, 말을 이을 수 없었습니다. 결국 나는 “모르겠구나.”라고 인정한 뒤 “하지만 너를 위해 찾아보마.”라고 했습니다.
내가 찾아낸 답은 응결된 수분이 중력에 의해 내려오다가 지면에서 올라온 온기를 만나면, 그 수분이 수증기로 변하여 다시 공중으로 올라간다는 것입니다. 이것이 이 현상에 대한 자연현상적인 설명입니다.
그러나 자연현상적인 설명은 궁극적인 답이 아닙니다. 구름은 “지식이 완전하신 자의 경이로운 일”(욥 37:16)을 드러내도록 하나님께서 지혜로 자연의 법칙을 명령하셨기 때문에 떠 있는 것입니다. 그렇다면 구름은 창조 속에 들어있는 하나님의 선하심과 은혜를 눈에 보이게 밖으로 드러내는 하나의 상징으로 생각할 수 있습니다.
그러므로 언젠가 당신이 구름을 보며 거기서 어떤 모습을 그려보게 될 때, 만물을 아름답게 창조하신 하나님께서 구름이 하늘에 떠다니게 하셨다는 것을 기억하십시오. 하나님은 우리를 감탄과 찬미로 이끌기 위해 그렇게 하십니다. 하늘에 뭉게구름이나 층구름, 혹은 새털구름 등, 어떤 구름이 떠있든지 하늘은 하나님의 영광을 분명히 보여줍니다. |

욥기 37:1-16
[1] 이로 말미암아 내 마음이 떨며 그 자리에서 흔들렸도다
[2] 하나님의 음성 곧 그의 입에서 나오는 소리를 똑똑히 들으라
[3] 그 소리를 천하에 펼치시며 번갯불을 땅 끝까지 이르게 하시고
[4] 그 후에 음성을 발하시며 그의 위엄 찬 소리로 천둥을 치시며 그 음성이 들릴 때에 번개를 멈추게 아니하시느니라
[5] 하나님은 놀라운 음성을 내시며 우리가 헤아릴 수 없는 큰 일을 행하시느니라
[6] 눈을 명하여 땅에 내리라 하시며 적은 비와 큰 비도 내리게 명하시느니라
[7] 그가 모든 사람의 손에 표를 주시어 모든 사람이 그가 지으신 것을 알게 하려 하심이라
[8] 그러나 짐승들은 땅 속에 들어가 그 처소에 머무느니라
[9] 폭풍우는 그 밀실에서 나오고 추위는 북풍을 타고 오느니라
[10] 하나님의 입김이 얼음을 얼게 하고 물의 너비를 줄어들게 하느니라
[11] 또한 그는 구름에 습기를 실으시고 그의 번개로 구름을 흩어지게 하시느니라
[12] 그는 감싸고 도시며 그들의 할 일을 조종하시느니라 그는 땅과 육지 표면에 있는 모든 자들에게 명령하시느니라
[13] 혹은 징계를 위하여 혹은 땅을 위하여 혹은 긍휼을 위하여 그가 이런 일을 생기게 하시느니라
[14] 욥이여 이것을 듣고 가만히 서서 하나님의 오묘한 일을 깨달으라
[15] 하나님이 이런 것들에게 명령하셔서 그 구름의 번개로 번쩍거리게 하시는 것을 그대가 아느냐
