My wife, Shirley, and I enjoyed a cruise along the fjords of Norway in celebration of our 50th wedding anniversary. As we journeyed northward, we stopped in numerous towns and villages, often visiting churches. Among them was a 12th-century church that our guide described proudly as “still a working church.” I asked, “What do you mean?” She referred to the days of the state church, when the state-appointed pastors simply collected their paychecks but no one attended the services. But this church had been faithfully holding worship services and actively serving the Lord for almost 1,000 years!
I immediately thought of the seven churches of Revelation 2 and 3 to whom Jesus said, “I know your works” (2:2,9,13,19; 3:1,8,15). In addition, the church of Thessalonica was commended by the apostle Paul for its “work of faith, labor of love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ”(1 Thess.1:3).
I also thought of my church at home. For more than 130 years it has been faithful in preaching and caring for its congregation and community. It is truly a “working church.” What a privilege we have if we’re part of a local body of believers where we can grow and serve our Lord!
Lord, thank You for placing us into Your family andgiving us the privilege and responsibility to serveYou through our churches. May we be a shining lightof Your love to our communities and the world.
The church is a living body and
must have working parts.
Revelation 2:1-7
[1] "To the angel of the church in Ephesus write: These are the words of him who holds the seven stars in his right hand and walks among the seven golden lampstands: [2] I know your deeds, your hard work and your perseverance. I know that you cannot tolerate wicked men, that you have tested those who claim to be apostles but are not, and have found them false. [3] You have persevered and have endured hardships for my name, and have not grown weary. [4] Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken your first love. [5] Remember the height from which you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first. If you do not repent, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place. [6] But you have this in your favor: You hate the practices of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate. [7] He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes, I will give the right to eat from the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God.

활동 중인 교회
[ 요한계시록 2:1 - 2:7 ] - 찬송가600장
우리가 너희 모두로 말미암아 항상 하나님께 감사하며…너희의 믿음의 역사와 사랑의 수고와…소망의 인내를… 끊임없이 기억함이니 - 데살로니가전서 1:2-3
결혼 50주년을 맞이하여 나는 아내 셜리와 함께 노르웨이의 피요르드로 유람선 여행을 다녀왔습니다. 북쪽으로 여행하면서 우리는 많은 도시와 마을에 머물렀고, 종종 교회들도 방문했습니다. 그 교회들 중에는 12세기에 지어진 교회도 있었는데, “아직도 활동 중인 교회”라고 여행가이드가 자랑스럽게 설명했습니다. 내가 “그게 무슨 말입니까?”라고 묻자, 가이드는 국가가 교회를 관장했던 시기의 교회를 언급하며, 그 당시 국가에서 임명한 목회자는 급료만 받았을 뿐 아무도 예배에 참석하지 않았는데, 이 교회는 신실하게 예배를 드려왔고 거의 1000년 동안 열심히 주님을 섬겨왔다는 것이었습니다!
나는 즉시 요한계시록 2장과 3장에서 예수님이 “내가 네 행위를 알고 있다”(2:2, 9, 13, 19; 3:1, 8, 15)라고 말씀하신 일곱 교회를 떠올렸습니니다. 또한 “믿음의 역사와 사랑의 수고와 우리 주 예수 그리스도에 대한 소망의 인내”(살전 1:3) 때문에 바울사도가 칭찬한 데살로니가교회도 생각났습니다.
우리 동네에 있는 내가 다니는 교회도 생각났습니다. 130년 이상 그 교회는 성도들과 지역사회에 말씀을 전하고 돌보는 일을 신실하게 감당해왔습니다. 진정으로 “활동 중인 교회”입니다. 만약 우리가 믿는 자들로 이루어진 지역교회에서 성장할 수 있고 주님을 섬기며 그 교회의 한 부분을 담당하고 있다면 우리는 정말 대단한 특권을 가지고 있는 것입니다!
주님, 우리를 주님의 가족으로 선택해 주시고 교회를 통해서 주님을 섬길 수 있는 특권과 책임을 주심을 감사드립니다. 우리가 지역사회와 세계를 향해 주님의 사랑의 빛을 발할 수 있게 해주소서.
교회는 살아있는 몸이므로 그 지체들도
살아 움직여야 한다.
