| Jesus Is Near |

Samuel, who was 4, had finished eating his dinner and asked if he could be dismissed from the table. He wanted to go outside to play. But he was too young to be out alone, so his mother said, “No. You can’t go outside by yourself. You need to wait for me to finish and go with you.” His quick reply: “But, Mommy, Jesus is with me!”
Samuel had learned well from his parents that the Lord is always by his side. We see in our Bible reading today that Jacob had learned that lesson too. His father Isaac had blessed him and told him to find a wife from among his mother’s family (Gen. 28:1-4). He followed that directive and traveled toward Haran.
As Jacob slept, the Lord came to him in a dream and said, “I am with you and will keep you wherever you go ... ; for I will not leave you” (v.15). When he awoke, he knew that he had heard from God, and said, “Surely the Lord is in this place” (v.16). Confident of God’s presence, he committed himself to following Him with his life (vv.20-21).
If we have received Jesus as our Savior (John 1:12), we can be confident and take comfort in the truth that He is always present with us (Heb.13:5). Like Jacob, may our response to His love be wholehearted devotion. |
Genesis 28:10-22
[10] Now Jacob went out from Beersheba and went toward Haran.
[11] So he came to a certain place and stayed there all night, because the sun had set. And he took one of the stones of that place and put it at his head, and he lay down in that place to sleep.
[12] Then he dreamed, and behold, a ladder was set up on the earth, and its top reached to heaven; and there the angels of God were ascending and descending on it.
[13] And behold, the LORD stood above it and said: "I am the LORD God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie I will give to you and your descendants.
[14] "Also your descendants shall be as the dust of the earth; you shall spread abroad to the west and the east, to the north and the south; and in you and in your seed all the families of the earth shall be blessed.
[15] "Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have spoken to you."
[16] Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, "Surely the LORD is in this place, and I did not know it."
[17] And he was afraid and said, "How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven!"
[18] Then Jacob rose early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put at his head, set it up as a pillar, and poured oil on top of it.
[19] And he called the name of that place Bethel; but the name of that city had been Luz previously.
[20] Then Jacob made a vow, saying, "If God will be with me, and keep me in this way that I am going, and give me bread to eat and clothing to put on,
[21] "so that I come back to my father's house in peace, then the LORD shall be my God.
[22] "And this stone which I have set as a pillar shall be God's house, and of all that You give me I will surely give a tenth to You." | |

네살배기 사무엘이 저녁식사를 마치고 식탁에서 일어나도 되는지 엄마에게 물었습니다. 밖에 나가 놀고 싶었던 것입니다. 하지만 혼자 밖에 나가기에는 너무 어렸기 때문에 엄마는 “안 돼. 혼자 나갈 수 없어. 내가 식사를 끝내고 같이 나갈 테니 기다려.”라고 하자, 그는 재빨리 “하지만 엄마, 예수님이 나랑 계시잖아!”라고 대답하였습니다.
사무엘은 주님이 항상 그의 곁에 계시다는 것을 부모님으로부터 잘 배웠습니다. 오늘의 성경말씀에서 야곱도 그렇게 배웠다는 것을 알 수 있습니다. 그의 아버지 이삭이 그를 축복하면서 어머니의 친척 중에서 아내를 고르라고 하자(창 28:1-4), 그는 그 지시를 따라 하란을 향해 여행을 떠났습니다.
야곱이 잠들었을 때 하나님이 꿈에 나타나 “내가 너와 함께 있어 네가 어디로 가든지 너를 지키며……너를 떠나지 아니하리라”(15절)라고 말씀하셨습니다. 그는 깨어나 하나님으로부터 들은 말씀을 상기하며 “여호와께서 과연 여기 계시거늘”(16절)이라고 했습니다. 하나님의 임재를 확신한 그는 평생 동안 하나님을 따르기로 결심하였습니다(20-21절).
우리가 예수님을 우리의 구주로 받아들였다면(요 1:12), 주님이 늘 우리와 함께 하신다는 것을 확신하고 그 진리로 인해 위로를 받을 수 있습니다(히 13:5). 주님의 사랑에 대한 우리의 반응이 야곱처럼 진심에서 우러나오는 헌신이기를 바랍니다. |
창세기 28:10-22
[10] 야곱이 브엘세바에서 떠나 하란으로 향하여 가더니
[11] 한 곳에 이르러는 해가 진지라 거기서 유숙하려고 그 곳의 한 돌을 가져다가 베개로 삼고 거기 누워 자더니
[12] 꿈에 본즉 사닥다리가 땅 위에 서 있는데 그 꼭대기가 하늘에 닿았고 또 본즉 하나님의 사자들이 그 위에서 오르락내리락 하고
[13] 또 본즉 여호와께서 그 위에 서서 이르시되 나는 여호와니 너의 조부 아브라함의 하나님이요 이삭의 하나님이라 네가 누워 있는 땅을 내가 너와 네 자손에게 주리니
[14] 네 자손이 땅의 티끌 같이 되어 네가 서쪽과 동쪽과 북쪽과 남쪽으로 퍼져나갈지며 땅의 모든 족속이 너와 네 자손으로 말미암아 복을 받으리라
[15] 내가 너와 함께 있어 네가 어디로 가든지 너를 지키며 너를 이끌어 이 땅으로 돌아오게 할지라 내가 네게 허락한 것을 다 이루기까지 너를 떠나지 아니하리라 하신지라
[16] 야곱이 잠이 깨어 이르되 여호와께서 과연 여기 계시거늘 내가 알지 못하였도다
[17] 이에 두려워하여 이르되 두렵도다 이 곳이여 이것은 다름 아닌 하나님의 집이요 이는 하늘의 문이로다 하고
[18] 야곱이 아침에 일찍이 일어나 베개로 삼았던 돌을 가져다가 기둥으로 세우고 그 위에 기름을 붓고
[19] 그 곳 이름을 벧엘이라 하였더라 이 성의 옛 이름은 루스더라
[20] 야곱이 서원하여 이르되 하나님이 나와 함께 계셔서 내가 가는 이 길에서 나를 지키시고 먹을 떡과 입을 옷을 주시어
[21] 내가 평안히 아버지 집으로 돌아가게 하시오면 여호와께서 나의 하나님이 되실 것이요
[22] 내가 기둥으로 세운 이 돌이 하나님의 집이 될 것이요 하나님께서 내게 주신 모든 것에서 십분의 일을 내가 반드시 하나님께 드리겠나이다 하였더라 | |
