Surely the LORD is in this place, and I did not know it. - Genesis 28:16
A popular song from years ago titled “From a Distance” envisions a world of harmony and peace. It says, “God is watching us from a distance.” Indeed God is watching us, but not from a distance. He is present, in the room with you, right in front of you, gazing at you with unbounded love in His eyes.
I think of the example of Brother Lawrence, who spent long years working in a kitchen washing pots and pans and repairing the sandals of other monks. He wrote: “As often as I could, I placed myself as a worshiper before Him, fixing my mind upon His holy presence.”
That is our task as well. But we forget and sometimes need reminders of His presence. I have driven an old handmade nail into the shelf over my desk to remind me that the crucified and resurrected Jesus is always present. Our task is to remember to “set the Lord always before [us]”(Ps.16:8)-to know that He is with us to “the end of the age”(Matt.28:20) and that “He is not far from each one of us”(Acts 17:27).
Remembering may be as simple as calling to mind that the Lord has promised to be with you all through the day and saying to Him, “Good morning,” or “Thank You,” or “Help!” or “I love You.” - David Roper

Acts 17:22-31
[22] Paul then stood up in the meeting of the Areopagus and said: "Men of Athens! I see that in every way you are very religious. [23] For as I walked around and looked carefully at your objects of worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: TO AN UNKNOWN GOD. Now what you worship as something unknown I am going to proclaim to you. [24] "The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by hands. [25] And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything, because he himself gives all men life and breath and everything else. [26] From one man he made every nation of men, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he determined the times set for them and the exact places where they should live. [27] God did this so that men would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from each one of us. [28] 'For in him we live and move and have our being.' As some of your own poets have said, 'We are his offspring.' [29] "Therefore since we are God's offspring, we should not think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone--an image made by man's design and skill. [30] In the past God overlooked such ignorance, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent. [31] For he has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed. He has given proof of this to all men by raising him from the dead."

멀리서
[ 사도행전 17:22 - 17:31 ] - 찬송가292장
여호와께서 과연 여기 계시거늘 내가 알지 못하였도다 - 창세기 28:16
여러 해 전에 나왔던 “멀리서”라는 제목의 팝송은 화합과 평화의 세계를 노래하고 있습니다. 그 노래는 “멀리서 하나님이 우리를 지켜보고 계신다.”라고 말합니다. 하나님이 우리를 지켜보고 계시는 것은 사실이지만, 멀리서 보고 계시지 않습니다. 그는 방안에서 당신과 함께 계시며, 또 바로 당신 앞에서 무한한 사랑의 눈으로 바라보고 계십니다.
오랜 세월 동안 주방에서 냄비와 프라이팬을 씻고 다른 수도사들의 신발을 고쳐주었던 로렌스 수도사의 예가 생각납니다. 그는 이렇게 썼습니다. “나는 할 수 있을 때마다, 스스로 예배자로서 하나님 앞에 서서, 나의 마음을 하나님의 거룩한 임재에 고정시켜두었습니다.”
우리도 마땅히 그렇게 해야 합니다. 그러나 우리는 잊어버리기 때문에 가끔 하나님의 임재하심을 상기시켜주는 무언가가 필요합니다. 나는 책상 위 선반에 오래된 못을 박아 놓고, 십자가에 못 박히시고 부활하신 예수님이 늘 함께 계심을 상기하고 있습니다. 우리가 해야 할 일은 “여호와를 항상 [우리] 앞에 모시는”(시 16:8) 것이라는 것을 기억하며, 주님께서 “세상 끝날”(마 28:20)까지 우리와 함께하심과 “그는 우리 각 사람에게서 멀리 떠나 계시지 않다”(행 17:27)는 것을 아는 것입니다.
기억한다는 것은, 주님이 하루 종일 당신과 함께 하시겠다고 약속하신 것을 마음에 떠올리면서, 주님께 “안녕하세요.” “감사합니다.” “도와주세요!” “사랑합니다.”라고 말하는 것처럼 아주 간단한 일이기도 합니다.
하나님께 정말 가까이 가고 싶지만 가까이 갈 수 있는 한계가 있네 그러나 그분의 아들 예수님 안에 있으면 예수님만큼 나도 가까이 간다네
누구라도 하나님께 더 이상 가까워질 수 없을 만큼 가까이 다가갈 수 있다.
사도행전 17:22-31
[22] 바울이 아레오바고 가운데 서서 말하되 아덴 사람들아 너희를 보니 범사에 종교심이 많도다 [23] 내가 두루 다니며 너희가 위하는 것들을 보다가 알지 못하는 신에게라고 새긴 단도 보았으니 그런즉 너희가 알지 못하고 위하는 그것을 내가 너희에게 알게 하리라 [24] 우주와 그 가운데 있는 만물을 지으신 하나님께서는 천지의 주재시니 손으로 지은 전에 계시지 아니하시고 [25] 또 무엇이 부족한 것처럼 사람의 손으로 섬김을 받으시는 것이 아니니 이는 만민에게 생명과 호흡과 만물을 친히 주시는 이심이라 [26] 인류의 모든 족속을 한 혈통으로 만드사 온 땅에 살게 하시고 그들의 연대를 정하시며 거주의 경계를 한정하셨으니 [27] 이는 사람으로 혹 하나님을 더듬어 찾아 발견하게 하려 하심이로되 그는 우리 각 사람에게서 멀리 계시지 아니하도다 [28] 우리가 그를 힘입어 살며 기동하며 존재하느니라 너희 시인 중 어떤 사람들의 말과 같이 우리가 그의 소생이라 하니 [29] 이와 같이 하나님의 소생이 되었은즉 하나님을 금이나 은이나 돌에다 사람의 기술과 고안으로 새긴 것들과 같이 여길 것이 아니니라 [30] 알지 못하던 시대에는 하나님이 간과하셨거니와 이제는 어디든지 사람에게 다 명하사 회개하라 하셨으니 [31] 이는 정하신 사람으로 하여금 천하를 공의로 심판할 날을 작정하시고 이에 그를 죽은 자 가운데서 다시 살리신 것으로 모든 사람에게 믿을 만한 증거를 주셨음이니라 하니라
