God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. — Revelation 21:4
A very severe and tragic event in US history was the forced relocation of thousands of Native Americans in the early 19th century. Native American tribes, who had struck treaties with and fought alongside the burgeoning white population, were driven out of their ancestral lands. In the winter of 1838, thousands of Cherokee were forced to embark on a brutal 1,000-mile march westward known as The Trail of Tears. This injustice resulted in the deaths of thousands of people, many of whom had little or no clothing, shoes, or supplies for such a journey.
The world continues to be filled with injustice, pain, and heartache. And many today may feel as if they are leaving a trail of tears—tears that go unnoticed and grief that is not comforted. But our Lord sees our tears and comforts our weary hearts (2 Cor.1:3-5). He also declares the hope of a future time not marked by the stains of sin or injustice. In that day and in that place, “God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away”(Rev.21:4).
The God who offers freedom from tears in the future is the only one who can fully comfort our tears now.
Loving Father, thank You that our hurts and pains matter to You. Thank You for the promise of an eternity without tears and a life forever with You. Amen.
When God permits trials,
He also provides comfort.

[1] Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. [2] I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. [3] And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. [4] He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away." [5] He who was seated on the throne said, "I am making everything new!" Then he said, "Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true." [6] He said to me: "It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To him who is thirsty I will give to drink without cost from the spring of the water of life. [7] He who overcomes will inherit all this, and I will be his God and he will be my son.

눈물의 여정
[ 요한계시록 21:1 - 21:7 ] - 찬송가278장
모든 눈물을 그 눈에서 닦아주시니 다시는 사망이 없고 애통하는 것이나 곡하는 것이나 아픈 것이 다시 있지 아니하리니 - 요한계시록 21:4
미국 역사상 정말 가혹하고 비극적인 사건 중 하나는 19세기 초에 수많은 인디언 원주민들을 강제로 이주시킨 일이었습니다. 계속 늘어나는 백인들과 협정을 맺고 백인들 편에서 함께 싸우던 인디언 부족들이 결국은 선조 때부터 오랫동안 살아오던 그들의 땅에서 서쪽으로 쫓겨났습니다. 1838년 겨울, 수천 명의 체로키족 인디언들은 서쪽을 향해 ‘눈물의 여정’이라고 알려진 1,600킬로미터의 혹독한 행진을 강요당했습니다. 이 부당한 일로 인해서 수천 명의 사망자가 생겼는데, 그들 대부분에게는 이런 긴 여행에 필요한 의복이나, 신발, 보급품들이 거의 없었습니다.
이 세상은 여전히 부당한 일과 고통, 그리고 가슴 아픈 일들로 가득 차 있습니다. 오늘날도 많은 사람들이 남몰래 눈물 흘리면서 슬픔을 위로 받지 못한 채 스스로 ‘눈물의 여정’을 걷고 있는 것처럼 여길지 모릅니다. 그렇지만 주님은 우리의 눈물을 보시며 우리의 지친 마음을 위로해주십니다(고후 1:3-5). 뿐만 아니라, 죄와 불공평이 없는 미래의 소망을 선포하십니다. 그날 그곳에는 하나님께서 “모든 눈물을 그 눈에서 닦아 주시니 다시는 사망이 없고 애통하는 것이나 곡하는 것이나 아픈 것이 다시 있지 아니하리니 처음 것들이 다 지나갔음이러라”(계 21:4).
미래의 눈물로부터 우리를 해방시키신 하나님만이 현재의 눈물로부터 우리를 온전히 위로하실 수 있습니다.
사랑의 하나님아버지, 우리의 아픔과 고통을 헤아려주심을 감사합니다. 눈물 없이 영원히 주님과 함께 사는 삶을 약속해주시니 감사합니다. 아멘.

위로도 함께 주신다.
