| February 5, 2013 — by Cindy Hess Kasper | | | The Lesson | | [ Romans 12:14 - 12:21 ] - hymn365 | | | Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. — Romans 12:21 | One summer I was at a gathering of old high school acquaintances when someone behind me tapped me on my shoulder. As my eyes drifted over the woman’s name tag, my mind drifted back in time. I remembered a tightly folded note that had been shoved through the slot on my locker. It had contained cruel words of rejection that had shamed me and crushed my spirit. I remember thinking, Somebody needs to teach you a lesson on how to treat people! Although I felt as if I were reliving my adolescent pain, I mustered up my best fake smile; and insincere words began coming out of my mouth.
We began to converse. A sad story of a difficult upbringing and of an unhappy marriage began to pour out of her. As it did, the words “root of bitterness” from Hebrews 12:15 popped into my head. That’s what I’m feeling, I thought. After all these years, I still had a deep root of bitterness hidden within me, twisting around and strangling my heart.
Then these words came to my mind: “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good”(Rom.12:21).
We talked. We even shared some tears. Neither of us mentioned the long-ago incident. God taught someone a lesson that afternoon—a lesson of forgiveness and of letting go of bitterness. He taught it to me. |
Romans 12:14-21
[14] Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse.
[15] Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.
[16] Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited.
[17] Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everybody.
[18] If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.
[19] Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God's wrath, for it is written: "It is mine to avenge; I will repay," says the Lord.
[20] on the contrary: "If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head."

| | 2013년 02월 05일 (화) | | | 교훈 | | [ 로마서 12:14 - 12:21 ] - 찬송가 365장 | | | 악에게 지지 말고 선으로 악을 이기라 - 로마서 12:21 | 어느 여름날 고등학교 동창회에 갔을 때, 누군가가 뒤에서 내 어깨를 툭 쳤습니다. 그 여자의 이름표를 훑어보며 나는 과거로 돌아가 단단히 접혀 내 사물함에 꽂혀 있던 쪽지를 기억하게 되었습니다. 잔인하게 거절하는 글이 쓰인 그 쪽지는 나를 부끄럽게 하고 나의 기분을 상하게 했습니다. ‘누군가 너에게 사람 대하는 법을 좀 가르쳐줘야겠다!’라고 그때 생각했던 것이 기억납니다. 비록 사춘기 시절의 아픔이 되살아나는 듯이 느껴졌지만, 나는 거짓으로 미소 지으며 마음에도 없는 말을 하기 시작했습니다.
우리가 대화를 시작하자 어렵게 자라온 환경과 불행한 결혼생활에 대한 슬픈 이야기가 그녀에게서 쏟아져 나오기 시작했습니다. 그러는 동안 히브리서 12장 15절의 “쓴 뿌리”라는 말이 갑자기 떠올랐고, 이게 내가 느끼는 기분이라는 생각이 들었습니다. 세월이 흘렀지만 내 속에는 아직도 비비꼬여 내 마음을 짓누르는 깊은 쓴 뿌리가 숨겨져 있었던 것입니다.
그리고는 “악에게 지지 말고 선으로 악을 이기라”(롬 12:21)라는 말씀도 떠올랐습니다.
우리는 함께 얘기하면서 울기도 했습니다. 누구도 그 옛날 일을 이야기하지 않았습니다. 하나님은 그날 오후에 용서에 대해, 그리고 쓴 뿌리를 버리는 것에 대해 누군가에게 교훈을 가르쳐 주셨습니다. 바로 나에게 가르쳐 주신 것입니다. |
로마서 12:14-21
[14] 너희를 박해하는 자를 축복하라 축복하고 저주하지 말라
[15] 즐거워하는 자들과 함께 즐거워하고 우는 자들과 함께 울라
[16] 서로 마음을 같이하며 높은 데 마음을 두지 말고 도리어 낮은 데 처하며 스스로 지혜 있는 체 하지 말라
[17] 아무에게도 악을 악으로 갚지 말고 모든 사람 앞에서 선한 일을 도모하라
[18] 할 수 있거든 너희로서는 모든 사람과 더불어 화목하라
[19] 내 사랑하는 자들아 너희가 친히 원수를 갚지 말고 하나님의 진노하심에 맡기라 기록되었으되 원수 갚는 것이 내게 있으니 내가 갚으리라고 주께서 말씀하시니라
[20] 네 원수가 주리거든 먹이고 목마르거든 마시게 하라 그리함으로 네가 숯불을 그 머리에 쌓아 놓으리라
