| February 6, 2013 — by Marvin Williams | | | By Our Deeds | | [ Matthew 23:23 - 23:31 ] - hymn211 | | | Even a child is known by his deeds, whether what he does is pure and right. — Proverbs 20:11 | One night a clergyman was walking to church when a thief pulled a gun on him and demanded his money or his life. When he reached in his pocket to hand over his wallet, the robber saw his clerical collar and said: “I see you are a priest. Never mind, you can go.” The clergyman, surprised by the robber’s unexpected act of piety, offered him a candy bar. The robber said, “No thank you. I don’t eat candy during Lent.”
The man had given up candy as a supposed sacrifice for Lent, but his lifestyle of stealing showed his real character! According to the writer of Proverbs, conduct is the best indicator of character. If someone says he is a godly person, his words can only be proven by consistent actions (20:11). This was true of the religious leaders in Jesus’ day as well. He condemned the Pharisees and exposed their sham for professing godliness but denying that profession with sin in their lives (Matt.23:13-36). Appearances and words are deceiving; behavior is the best judge of character. This applies to all of us.
As followers of Jesus, we demonstrate our love for Him by what we do, not just by what we say. May our devotion to God, because of His love for us, be revealed in our actions today. |

Matthew 23:23-31
[23] "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices--mint, dill and cummin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law--justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former.
[24] You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel.
[25] "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence.
[26] Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside also will be clean.
[27] "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of dead men's bones and everything unclean.
[28] In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness.
[29] "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You build tombs for the prophets and decorate the graves of the righteous.
[30] And you say, 'If we had lived in the days of our forefathers, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.'
[31] So you testify against yourselves that you are the descendants of those who murdered the prophets. |
| | 2013년 02월 06일 (수) | | | 행동으로 | | [ 마태복음 23:23 - 23:31 ] - 찬송가 211장 | | | 비록 아이라도 자기의 동작으로 자기 품행이 청결한 여부와 정직한 여부를 나타내느니라 - 잠언 20:11 | 어느 날 밤 목사가 교회로 걸어가는데 강도가 총을 들이대며 돈이 아니면 목숨을 내놓으라고 했습니다. 목사가 지갑을 건네주려고 주머니에 손을 넣었을 때 강도가 그의 옷깃을 보고는, “목사님이시군요. 그냥 가십시오.”라고 말했습니다. 강도의 예상치 못한 경건한 행동에 놀란 목사는 그에게 쵸코바를 건넸습니다. 그러자 강도는 “괜찮습니다. 사순절 기간이라 사탕은 먹지 않습니다.”라고 말했습니다.
강도는 이른바 사순절 기간의 희생이라는 명목으로 쵸코바를 먹지는 않았지만 도둑질이라는 삶의 방식이 그의 실제 품성을 그대로 드러낸 것이지요! 잠언의 저자에 따르면 품성을 가장 잘 나타내주는 것은 행위입니다. 만약 누가 자기는 경건한 사람이라고 말한다면 그의 말은 오직 일치되는 행위로만 증명될 수 있는 것입니다(20:11). 이것은 예수님 시대의 종교지도자들에게도 마찬가지였습니다. 예수님은 스스로 경건하다고 공언하면서도 그들의 삶 가운데 죄가 있음을 인정하지 않았던 바리새인들의 위선을 드러내시고 책망하셨습니다(마 23:13-36). 외모와 언사는 우리를 속이기 쉽습니다. 행위가 품성을 판단할 수 있는 가장 좋은 잣대입니다. 이것은 우리 모두에게 해당됩니다.
예수님의 제자로서 우리는 우리의 말뿐 아니라 우리의 행위로써 예수님에 대한 우리의 사랑을 증명합니다. 우리를 향하신 하나님의 사랑 때문에 하나님께 드리는 우리의 헌신이 오늘 우리의 행동을 통해서 드러날 수 있기를 바랍니다. |

[23] 화 있을진저 외식하는 서기관들과 바리새인들이여 너희가 박하와 회향과 근채의 십일조는 드리되 율법의 더 중한 바 정의와 긍휼과 믿음은 버렸도다 그러나 이것도 행하고 저것도 버리지 말아야 할지니라
[24] 맹인 된 인도자여 하루살이는 걸러 내고 낙타는 삼키는도다
[25] 화 있을진저 외식하는 서기관들과 바리새인들이여 잔과 대접의 겉은 깨끗이 하되 그 안에는 탐욕과 방탕으로 가득하게 하는도다
[26] 눈 먼 바리새인이여 너는 먼저 안을 깨끗이 하라 그리하면 겉도 깨끗하리라
[27] 화 있을진저 외식하는 서기관들과 바리새인들이여 회칠한 무덤 같으니 겉으로는 아름답게 보이나 그 안에는 죽은 사람의 뼈와 모든 더러운 것이 가득하도다
[28] 이와 같이 너희도 겉으로는 사람에게 옳게 보이되 안으로는 외식과 불법이 가득하도다
[29] 화 있을진저 외식하는 서기관들과 바리새인들이여 너희는 선지자들의 무덤을 만들고 의인들의 비석을 꾸미며 이르되
[30] 만일 우리가 조상 때에 있었더라면 우리는 그들이 선지자의 피를 흘리는 데 참여하지 아니하였으리라 하니
[31] 그러면 너희가 선지자를 죽인 자의 자손임을 스스로 증명함이로다 |
