When you buy a nice piece of jewelry, it is often tucked into a setting of black- or dark-colored velvet. I think it’s designed that way so that your attention is immediately drawn to the beauty of the jewelry. If the packaging were highly decorated, it would compete with the beauty of the treasure.
It reminds me of Paul’s comments about the ministry of Jesus through us, when he said, “We have this treasure in jars of clay” (2 Cor. 4:7 niv). It’s easy to forget that we are the packaging and His work is the treasure. So we adorn our jars of clay, taking credit for the things we do to serve Christ. We seek to bring glory to ourselves when we’ve forgiven someone, or shown mercy, or given generously. The problem is, when we start seeking affirmation and praise for good deeds, we compete with the brilliance of the treasure of God working through us.
When we do things for Christ, it’s not about us but about His glory. The less obvious we are, the more brilliant He becomes. Which is why, Paul says, the treasure has been put in jars of clay so that God would be the one to be glorified. Besides, since when are jars of clay significant? It’s what’s inside that counts!

2 Corinthians 4:7-15
[7] But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. [8] We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; [9] persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. [10] We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body. [11] For we who are alive are always being given over to death for Jesus' sake, so that his life may be revealed in our mortal body. [12] So then, death is at work in us, but life is at work in you. [13] It is written: "I believed; therefore I have spoken." With that same spirit of faith we also believe and therefore speak, [14] because we know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus from the dead will also raise us with Jesus and present us with you in his presence. 질그릇
[ 고린도후서 4:7 - 4:15 ] - 찬송가457장
우리가 이 보배를 질그릇에 가졌으니 이는 심히 큰 능력은 하나님께 있고 우리에게 있지 아니함을 알게 하려 함이라 - 고린도후서 4:7
귀한 보석을 하나 사면, 그것은 대개 검정색이나 짙은 색의 부드러운 천으로 된 포장 속에 감싸여 있습니다. 보석의 아름다움이 우리의 시선에 확 들어오도록 그렇게 디자인된 것이라고 생각됩니다. 만일 포장이 아주 화려하게 장식되어 있다면, 그 포장이 보석의 아름다움을 경쟁하게 될 것입니다.
이것은 우리를 통해 행하시는 예수님의 사역에 대해 말하면서 바울이 “우리가 이 보배를 질그릇에 가졌으니”(고후 4:7)라고 말했던 것을 생각나게 해줍니다. 우리는 우리가 포장이며 예수님의 사역이 보화인 것을 잊기 쉽습니다. 우리는 그리스도를 섬기는 일들로 스스로 인정받음으로써 우리의 질그릇을 장식합니다. 누군가를 용서했을 때, 또는 자비를 보이거나 넉넉히 베풀었을 때 우리는 스스로에게 영광을 돌리려 합니다. 문제는 우리의 선행에 대한 인정과 칭찬을 구하기 시작할 때, 우리는 우리를 통해 일하시는 하나님의 보배로운 광채와 경쟁하게 된다는 것입니다.
우리가 그리스도를 위해 일할 때, 그것은 우리가 아닌 그리스도의 영광을 위한 것입니다. 우리가 덜 드러날수록 그리스도께서 더 빛이 나십니다. 이것이 바로 하나님께서 영광을 받으시도록 보배가 질그릇에 담겨있다고 바울이 말한 이유입니다. 질그릇이 소중했던 적이 있었습니까? 정말 가치가 있는 것은 그 안의 내용물입니다!
우리가 하나님의 영광을 가리지 않도록 우리가 그분의 빛을 흐리지 않도록 도와주소서 우리의 생각들이 비워지고 그리스도께 사로잡혀 그리스도로 채워지게 하소서
그리스도를 위해 사는 삶을 통해 보배로운 그리스도의 광채가 빛나게 하라.
