Sir Christopher Michael WrenFRS(20 October 1632 – 25 February 1723) is one of the most highly acclaimed English architects in history.[1]He was accorded responsibility for rebuilding52 churchesin theCity of Londonafter theGreat Firein 1666, including his masterpiece,St. Paul's Cathedral, onLudgate Hill, completed in 1710. The principal creative responsibility for a number of the churches is now more commonly attributed to others in his office, especiallyNicholas Hawksmoor. Other notable buildings by Wren include theRoyal Naval College, Greenwichand the south front ofHampton Court Palace.
I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life. — John 8:12
Sir Christopher Wren designed and built more than 50 church buildings in London during the late 1600s. His design style had two prominent features—the first of which was sturdy, tall steeples. The second, however, was more profound. Wren was convinced that all of the windows in his churches must use clear glass as opposed to the stained glass so popular in churches of that era. In part, his reason for the clear glass is found in words attributed to him: “God’s greatest gift to man is light.” Allowing light to bathe people as they worshiped was, to Wren, a celebration of that gift.
In the Genesis account, on the first day of creation God made light (1:3). The light God created is even more than just a means by which to see. It’s a picture of what Christ brought when He entered this darkened world. In John 8:12, our Lord said, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.” To the follower of Christ, light is one of the great reminders of the character of our Savior and the quality of the life He has given us through His sacrifice on the cross.
Wren was right. God’s greatest gift to man is light—Jesus Christ, the Light of the world!

John 8:12-20
[12] When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." [13] The Pharisees challenged him, "Here you are, appearing as your own witness; your testimony is not valid." [14] Jesus answered, "Even if I testify on my own behalf, my testimony is valid, for I know where I came from and where I am going. But you have no idea where I come from or where I am going. [15] You judge by human standards; I pass judgment on no one. [16] But if I do judge, my decisions are right, because I am not alone. I stand with the Father, who sent me. [17] In your own Law it is written that the testimony of two men is valid. [18] I am one who testifies for myself; my other witness is the Father, who sent me." [19] Then they asked him, "Where is your father?" "You do not know me or my Father," Jesus replied. "If you knew me, you would know my Father also." [20] He spoke these words while teaching in the temple area near the place where the offerings were put. Yet no one seized him, because his time had not yet come.

빛의 선물

나는 세상의 빛이니 나를 따르는 자는 어둠에 다니지 아니하고 생명의 빛을 얻으리라 - 요한복음 8:12
크리스토퍼 렌 경은 1600년대 후반에 영국에서 50여개의 교회 건물을 설계하고 건축하였습니다. 그의 설계양식에는 두 가지의 두드러진 특징이 있었는데, 그 하나는 강하고 높은 뾰족탑이었습니다. 그런데 두 번째 특징은 좀 더 심오한 것이었습니다. 렌 경은 교회 안의 모든 창문에는 그 시대의 교회에 유행이던 착색된 유리를 쓰지 않고 투명유리를 사용해야 한다고 확신하고 있었습니다. 그가 투명유리를 쓰려했던 이유는 “인간에게 주신 하나님의 가장 위대한 선물은 빛이다.”라는 그의 말에서 어느 정도 찾아볼 수 있습니다. 사람들이 예배드릴 때 그들을 온통 빛으로 감싸게 하는 것이 렌 경에게는 그 선물을 축하하는 행위였습니다.
창세기 기사를 보면 하나님은 창조 첫째 날에 빛을 만드셨습니다(1:3). 하나님이 창조하신 빛은 단지 보게 해주는 빛으로의 수단 그 이상의 것입니다. 그것은 이 어두운 세상에 오신 예수님을 상징하는 것입니다. 요한복음 8장 12절에서 우리 주님은 “나는 세상의 빛이니 나를 따르는 자는 어둠에 다니지 아니하고 생명의 빛을 얻으리라”라고 말씀하셨습니다. 그리스도를 따르는 자들에게 빛은 우리 구주의 성품을 가장 잘 기억나게 해주는 것들 중의 하나이며, 십자가에서의 희생을 통해 우리에게 주신 생명의 특성을 보여주는 것입니다.
렌이 옳았습니다. 인간에게 준 하나님의 가장 큰 선물은 빛, 바로 세상의 빛이신 예수 그리스도입니다!
창조주 하나님, 우주의 흑암을 향해 빛이 있으라 말씀하신 하나님께 감사드립니다. 하나님의 아들 예수 그리스도를 통하여 나의 어두운 마음에 빛을 주신
하나님께 감사드립니다.
예수님은 어두운 세상에 빛을 주시기 위해 오셨다.
요한복음 8:12-20
