A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another. — John 13:34
A while ago, I wrote an article about my wife, Marlene, and her struggles with vertigo. When the article appeared, I was unprepared for the tidal wave of response from readers offering encouragement, help, suggestions and, mostly, concern for her well-being. These messages came from all over the world, from people in all walks of life. ｅxpressions of loving concern for my wife poured in to the point where we could not even begin to answer them all. It was overwhelming in the best kind of way to see the body of Christ respond to Marlene’s struggle. We were, and remain, deeply grateful.
At its core, this is how the body is supposed to work. Loving concern for our brothers and sisters in Christ becomes the evidence that we have experienced His love. While addressing the disciples at the Last Supper, Jesus said, “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all will know that you are My disciples”(John 13:34-35).
Marlene and I experienced a sampling of Christlike love and concern in those letters we received. With the help of our Savior and as a way of praising Him, may we show others that kind of love as well.

압도적 관심

얼마 전 나는 아내 말린과 그녀가 겪는 어지럼증의 고통에 대해 글을 썼습니다. 글이 나가자 독자들의 반응이 물밀듯이 밀려와 크게 놀랐습니다. 그것들은 격려와 도움, 제의, 충고, 그리고 대부분 아내의 건강을 염려하는 것들이었습니다. 세계 각지에서 사회 각계각층의 사람들이 메시지를 보내주었습니다. 말린에 대한 애정 어린 관심을 보여준 분들이 너무 많아서 우리는 답장을 쓸 엄두도 내지 못했습니다. 우리는 말린의 고통에 대해 훌륭한 방식으로 그리스도의 지체들이 보여준 반응에 압도되었습니다. 우리는 그때도, 그리고 지금도 진심어린 감사의 마음을 갖고 있습니다.
핵심은 이것이 그리스도의 지체가 마땅히 해야 할 일이라는 것입니다. 그리스도 안에서 우리가 형제와 자매에게 애정 어린 관심을 보이는 것은 우리가 주님의 사랑을 경험했다는 증거입니다. 예수님은 최후의 만찬에서 제자들에게 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. “새 계명을 너희에게 주노니 서로 사랑하라 내가 너희를 사랑한 것 같이 너희도 서로 사랑하라 너희가 서로 사랑하면 이로써 모든 사람이 너희가 내 제자인 줄 알리라”(요 13:34-35).
말린과 나는 우리가 받은 그 편지들을 통해서 그리스도의 사랑과 관심의 표본을 경험할 수 있었습니다. 우리 구주의 도움으로, 그리고 주님을 찬양함으로써 우리도 그와 같은 사랑을 다른 이들에게 보여줄 수 있습니다.
사람들의 무거운 짐을 안고 그들의 고통과 슬픔을 지고 다른 이들에게 그리스도의 사랑을 보여 주님의 확실한 안식으로 그들을 데려가리
하나님에 대한 우리의 사랑의 높이는 다른 사람들에 대한 우리의 사랑의 깊이와 같다.
요한복음 13:31-35
