Risks and Rescue
[ Romans 16:1 - 16:7 ] - hymn325
Greet Priscilla and Aquila ... who risked their own necks for my life. — Romans 16:3-4
On September 7, 1838, Grace Darling, the daughter of an English lighthouse keeper, spotted a shipwreck and survivors offshore. Together, she and her father courageously rowed their boat a mile through rough waters to rescue several people. Grace became a legend for her compassionate heart and steady hand in risking her life to rescue others.
The apostle Paul tells us of another man and woman team who took risks to rescue others. He wrote about Priscilla and Aquila, his fellow workers in Christ, who “risked their own necks for my life, to whom not only I give thanks, but also all the churches of the Gentiles”(Rom.16:3-4).
We are not told exactly what “risk” Paul was referring to, but with beatings, imprisonment, shipwrecks, and threats of death so common to Paul’s ministry, it’s not hard to see how this couple could have put themselves in harm’s way to help their friend. Apparently, Paul’s rescue was more important to them than their own safety.
Rescuing others—whether from physical or spiritual danger—often carries a risk. But when we take a risk by reaching out to others, we reflect the heart of our Savior who gave up so much for us.

Romans 16:1-7
[1] I commend to you our sister Phoebe, a servant of the church in Cenchrea.
[2] I ask you to receive her in the Lord in a way worthy of the saints and to give her any help she may need from you, for she has been a great help to many people, including me.
[3] Greet Priscilla and Aquila, my fellow workers in Christ Jesus.
[4] They risked their lives for me. Not only I but all the churches of the Gentiles are grateful to them.
[5] Greet also the church that meets at their house. Greet my dear friend Epenetus, who was the first convert to Christ in the province of Asia.
[6] Greet Mary, who worked very hard for you.
[7] Greet Andronicus and Junias, my relatives who have been in prison with me. They are outstanding among the apostles, and they were in Christ before I was.

위험과 구조

브리스가와 아굴라에게 문안하라 그들은 내 목숨을 위하여 자기들의 목까지도 내놓았나니 - 로마서 16:3-4
1838년 9월 7일, 영국인 등대지기의 딸이었던 그레이스 달링은 앞바다에서 난파된 배와 생존자들을 발견했습니다. 그녀는 그 사람들을 구하기 위해 아버지와 함께 거친 파도를 헤치고 1.5킬로미터 정도 자신의 보트를 용감하게 저어갔습니다. 생명의 위협을 무릅쓰고 다른 이들을 구하기 위해 긍휼을 베푼 마음과 단호한 행동으로 그레이스는 전설적인 인물이 되었습니다.
바울사도는 다른 이들을 구하기 위해 위험을 무릅쓴 또 다른 남녀를 소개하고 있습니다. 그는 그리스도 안에서 동역자인 브리스가와 아굴라에 대해서 다음과 같이 말했습니다. “그들은 내 목숨을 위하여 자기들의 목까지도 내놓았나니 나뿐 아니라 이방인의 모든 교회도 그들에게 감사하느니라”(롬 16:4).
바울이 정확히 무슨 “위험”이라고 언급하지 않았지만, 바울의 사역에서 매 맞음, 감옥살이, 난파, 죽음의 위협이 얼마나 흔했는지를 생각해보면, 이 부부가 친구를 돕기 위해 어떤 위험에 처했을지는 상상하기 어렵지 않습니다. 분명히 그들에게는 바울을 구조하는 것이 자신들의 안전보다 더 중요했던 것입니다.
육체적, 정신적 위험으로부터 다른 이들을 구하는 것은 종종 위험을 동반합니다. 그러나 우리가 위험을 감수하며 다른 사람들에게 적극적으로 나아갈 때, 우리는 우리를 위해 너무나 많은 것을 희생하신 우리 구주의 마음을 조금이나마 반영하는 것입니다.
우리가 주님의 뜻을 행하려고 할 때
하나님의 손이 우리의 길을 보호해주시네
위험을 감수하는 그 때조차도
주님이 여전히 우리와 함께 하심을 아네
위기에서 구출된 사람은
자신도 다른 이들을 구출하고 싶을 것이다.
