Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel, which is translated, “God with us.” — Matthew 1:23
His presence in the room was obvious. Everyone else was dressed rather formally. He had on a pair of jeans, a T-shirt, and a weathered baseball cap. I couldn’t help but notice him as I addressed students that day in a seminary chapel in Bucharest, Romania. I have no idea why he didn’t conform to the norms of seminary attire, but I do remember his name.
At the close of the meeting he came up to introduce himself. When I asked him his name, he answered, “Immanuel.” I was surprised by his answer and asked if he knew what that meant; he unashamedly replied, “Yes—‘God with us!’”
I’ve often thought about that young man and how he stood out in the crowd. Just as Jesus came to bring the presence of God into our world—“Immanuel ... God with us”(Matt.1:23)—so too we are called to bring His presence into our world. Jesus made that clear when He said, “As the Father has sent Me, I also send you”(John 20:21).
This Christmas, we can give the gift of God’s likeness through us. When our lives reflect the God who lives in us, we can be different from the world, and that difference can bless others with the transforming presence of His love and grace.

[18] Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit. [19] Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not wanting to make her a public example, was minded to put her away secretly. [20] But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. [21] "And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins." 우리와 함께 하시는 하나님
[ 마태복음 1:18 - 1:25 ] - 찬송가104장
보라 처녀가 잉태하여 아들을 낳을 것이요 그의 이름은 임마누엘이라 하리라 하셨으니 이를 번역한즉 하나님이 우리와 함께 계시다 함이라 - 마태복음 1:23
방 안에는 그의 존재가 두드러지게 드러나 있었습니다. 모두들 정장에 가까운 옷차림을 하고 있었는데, 오직 그만이 청바지에다 티셔츠 차림에 낡은 야구 모자를 쓰고 있었기 때문입니다. 나는 루마니아 부카레스트의 한 신학교 강당에서 학생들에게 강연을 하고 있었는데, 그는 바로 눈에 띄었습니다. 그가 왜 신학교 복장 규범을 따르지 않았는지에 대해서는 알지 못하지만, 그 학생의 이름은 지금도 기억합니다.
모임이 끝난 후 그가 나에게 자기소개를 하러 왔을 때, 이름을 묻자 “임마누엘”이라고 대답했습니다. 대답을 듣고 놀란 내가 그 이름의 뜻이 무엇인지 아느냐고 물으니 그는 당당하게 이렇게 대답했습니다. “네, ‘하나님이 우리와 함께 하신다!’는 뜻입니다.”
나는 종종 그 청년을 생각하며 그가 군중 속에서 얼마나 두드러져 보였는지를 생각하곤 합니다. 이 땅에 하나님의 임재를 가져와 “임마누엘…하나님이 우리와 함께 계시”(마 1:23)도록 예수님이 오신 것처럼, 우리 역시 이 세상에 하나님의 임재를 나타내도록 부르심을 받았습니다. 예수님은 “아버지께서 나를 보내신 것 같이 나도 너희를 보내노라”(요 20:21)라고 말씀하심으로써 그것을 분명히 하셨습니다.
이번 성탄절에 우리는 우리 서로가 하나님을 닮은 모습을 선물로 줄 수 있습니다. 우리 안에 거하시는 하나님의 모습을 반영하면서 살 때 우리는 세상과 다르게 살게 되고, 또 그 달라진 모습을 통해 사람을 변화시키는 하나님의 사랑과 은혜로 다른 사람들을 축복할 수 있습니다.
주님의 영이 내 굶주린 영혼을 채우고 주님의 능력이 나의 온 삶을 주관하네 예수님과 같이 되고 싶은 것, 그것이 나의 가장 깊은 기도요 가장 높은 목적이라네
하나님의 임재를 드러내는 삶, 그것이 우리가 세상에 주는 선물이다.
