When I was battling a bad cold recently, I lost my appetite. I could go through an entire day without eating much food. Water would suffice. But I knew I couldn’t survive long on water alone. I needed to regain my appetite because my body needed nourishment.
When the people of Israel came back from exile in Babylon, their spiritual appetite was weak. They had departed from God and His ways. To get the people back to spiritual health, Nehemiah organized a Bible seminar, and Ezra was the teacher.
Ezra read from the book of the law of Moses from morning until midday, feeding the people with the truth of God (Neh.8:3). And the people listened attentively. In fact, their appetite for God’s Word was so stirred that the family leaders and the priests and Levites met with Ezra the following day to study the law in greater detail because they wanted to understand it (v.13).
When we feel estranged from God or spiritually weak, we can find spiritual nourishment from God’s Word. “As newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby”(1 Peter 2:2). Ask God to give you a renewed desire for relationship with Him, and begin feeding your heart, soul, and mind with His Word.

Feeding on God’s Word keeps us
strong and healthy in the Lord.
Nehemiah 8:1-12
[1] Now all the people gathered together as one man in the open square that was in front of the Water Gate; and they told Ezra the scribe to bring the Book of the Law of Moses, which the LORD had commanded Israel. [2] So Ezra the priest brought the Law before the assembly of men and women and all who could hear with understanding on the first day of the seventh month. [3] Then he read from it in the open square that was in front of the Water Gate from morning until midday, before the men and women and those who could understand; and the ears of all the people were attentive to the Book of the Law. [4] So Ezra the scribe stood on a platform of wood which they had made for the purpose; and beside him, at his right hand, stood Mattithiah, Shema, Anaiah, Urijah, Hilkiah, and Maaseiah; and at his left hand Pedaiah, Mishael, Malchijah, Hashum, Hashbadana, Zechariah, and Meshullam. [5] And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people, for he was standing above all the people; and when he opened it, all the people stood up. [6] And Ezra blessed the LORD, the great God. Then all the people answered, "Amen, Amen!" while lifting up their hands. And they bowed their heads and worshiped the LORD with their faces to the ground. [7] Also Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodijah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, and the Levites, helped the people to understand the Law; and the people stood in their place. [8] So they read distinctly from the book, in the Law of God; and they gave the sense, and helped them to understand the reading. [9] And Nehemiah, who was the governor, Ezra the priest and scribe, and the Levites who taught the people said to all the people, "This day is holy to the LORD your God; do not mourn nor weep." For all the people wept, when they heard the words of the Law. [10] Then he said to them, "Go your way, eat the fat, drink the sweet, and send portions to those for whom nothing is prepared; for this day is holy to our LORD. Do not sorrow, for the joy of the LORD is your strength." [11] So the Levites quieted all the people, saying, "Be still, for the day is holy; do not be grieved." [12] And all the people went their way to eat and drink, to send portions and rejoice greatly, because they understood the words that were declared to them.

식욕부진
[ 느헤미야 8:1 - 8:12 ] - 찬송가198장
갓난 아기들 같이 순전하고 신령한 젖을 사모하라 이는 그로 말미암아 너희로 구원에 이르도록 자라게 하려 함이라 - 베드로전서 2:2
최근에 지독한 감기에 걸렸을 때 나는 식욕을 잃었습니다. 음식을 별로 먹지 않고도 온종일 버틸 수 있었습니다. 물만으로도 충분했을 것입니다. 그러나 물만으로는 오래 버틸 수 없다는 것을 깨달았습니다. 내 몸에 영양분이 필요했기 때문에 식욕을 되찾아야 했습니다.
이스라엘백성이 바벨론 포로생활을 마치고 돌아왔을 때 그들의 영적 욕구는 매우 약해진 상태였습니다. 그들은 하나님과 그분이 원하는 생활방식에서 멀어져 있었습니다. 그래서 백성들의 영적 건강을 회복하게 하기 위해 느헤미야가 성경 세미나를 열고 에스라가 율법을 가르쳤습니다.
에스라는 새벽부터 정오까지 모세의 율법책을 읽으며 백성들에게 하나님의 진리를 먹였고(느 8:3) 백성들은 귀를 기울여 들었습니다. 실제로 하나님의 말씀에 대한 그들의 식욕이 되살아나, 족장들과 제사장, 레위인들이 율법을 이해하기를 원했기 때문에 더 상세히 공부하기 위해 다음 날에도 에스라를 만났습니다(13절).
우리가 하나님으로부터 멀어지거나 영적으로 쇠약할 때, 우리는 하나님의 말씀으로부터 영의 양식을 공급받을 수 있습니다. “갓난아이들 같이 순전하고 신령한 젖을 사모하라 이는 이로 말미암아 너희로 구원에 이르도록 자라게 하려 함이라”(벧전 2:2). 하나님과의 관계를 염원하는 새로운 마음을 달라고 하나님께 간구하고, 마음과 영과 생각을 하나님 말씀으로 채우기 시작하십시오.
주 예수여, 바닷가에서 떡을 떼사 무리를 먹여 주심 같이 영생의 양식을 나에게도 풍족히 나누어 주옵소서.
하나님의 말씀을 먹음으로써 우리는 주 안에서 늘 강하고 건강하게 된다.
느헤미야 8:1-12
[1] 이스라엘 자손이 자기들의 성읍에 거주하였더니 일곱째 달에 이르러 모든 백성이 일제히 수문 앞 광장에 모여 학사 에스라에게 여호와께서 이스라엘에게 명령하신 모세의 율법책을 가져오기를 청하매 [2] 일곱째 달 초하루에 제사장 에스라가 율법책을 가지고 회중 앞 곧 남자나 여자나 알아들을 만한 모든 사람 앞에 이르러 [3] 수문 앞 광장에서 새벽부터 정오까지 남자나 여자나 알아들을 만한 모든 사람 앞에서 읽으매 뭇 백성이 그 율법책에 귀를 기울였는데 [4] 그 때에 학사 에스라가 특별히 지은 나무 강단에 서고 그의 곁 오른쪽에 선 자는 맛디댜와 스마와 아나야와 우리야와 힐기야와 마아세야요 그의 왼쪽에 선 자는 브다야와 미사엘과 말기야와 하숨과 하스밧다나와 스가랴와 므술람이라 [5] 에스라가 모든 백성 위에 서서 그들 목전에 책을 펴니 책을 펼 때에 모든 백성이 일어서니라 [6] 에스라가 위대하신 하나님 여호와를 송축하매 모든 백성이 손을 들고 아멘 아멘 하고 응답하고 몸을 굽혀 얼굴을 땅에 대고 여호와께 경배하니라 [7] 예수아와 바니와 세레뱌와 야민과 악굽과 사브대와 호디야와 마아세야와 그리다와 아사랴와 요사밧과 하난과 블라야와 레위 사람들은 백성이 제자리에 서 있는 동안 그들에게 율법을 깨닫게 하였는데 [8] 하나님의 율법책을 낭독하고 그 뜻을 해석하여 백성에게 그 낭독하는 것을 다 깨닫게 하니 [9] 백성이 율법의 말씀을 듣고 다 우는지라 총독 느헤미야와 제사장 겸 학사 에스라와 백성을 가르치는 레위 사람들이 모든 백성에게 이르기를 오늘은 너희 하나님 여호와의 성일이니 슬퍼하지 말며 울지 말라 하고 [10] 느헤미야가 또 그들에게 이르기를 너희는 가서 살진 것을 먹고 단 것을 마시되 준비하지 못한 자에게는 나누어 주라 이 날은 우리 주의 성일이니 근심하지 말라 여호와로 인하여 기뻐하는 것이 너희의 힘이니라 하고 [11] 레위 사람들도 모든 백성을 정숙하게 하여 이르기를 오늘은 성일이니 마땅히 조용하고 근심하지 말라 하니 [12] 모든 백성이 곧 가서 먹고 마시며 나누어 주고 크게 즐거워하니 이는 그들이 그 읽어 들려 준 말을 밝히 앎이라
