Former US President Harry Truman had a rule: Any letters written in anger had to sit on his desk for 24 hours before they could be mailed. If at the end of that “cooling off” period, he still felt the same sentiments, he would send the letter. By the end of his life, Truman’s unmailed letters filled a large desk drawer.
How often in this age of immediate communication would even 24 minutes of wise restraint spare us embarrassment! In his epistle, James addressed a universal theme in human history when he wrote about the damage an uncontrolled tongue can bring. “No man can tame the tongue,” he wrote. “It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison”(3:8).
When we’re gossiping or speaking in anger, we find ourselves outside the lines of what God desires. Our tongues, our pens, and even our keyboards should more often fall silent with thanks in our hearts for the restraint God provides. All too often, when we speak we remind everyone of our brokenness as human beings.
When we want to surprise others with the difference Christ makes, we may need to look no further than restraining our tongue. Others can’t help but notice when we honor God with what we say—or don’t say. |

James 3:1-12
[1] My brethren, let not many of you become teachers, knowing that we shall receive a stricter judgment.
[2] For we all stumble in many things. If anyone does not stumble in word, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle the whole body.
[3] Indeed, we put bits in horses' mouths that they may obey us, and we turn their whole body.
[4] Look also at ships: although they are so large and are driven by fierce winds, they are turned by a very small rudder wherever the pilot desires.
[5] Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things. See how great a forest a little fire kindles!
[6] And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell.
[7] For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and creature of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by mankind.
[8] But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.
[9] With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the similitude of God.
[10] Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so.
[11] Does a spring send forth fresh water and bitter from the same opening?
[12] Can a fig tree, my brethren, bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Thus no spring yields both salt water and fresh. | |

전직 미국 대통령 해리 트루만에게는 하나의 규칙이 있었습니다. 화가 나서 쓴 편지는 발송하기 전에 24시간 동안 책상 위에 그대로 놓아두는 것이었습니다. 만일 “화를 가라앉히는” 그 시간이 지났는데도 화가 식지 않으면 편지를 보냈습니다. 트루만의 임종시에는 그가 부치지 않은 편지가 큰 책상 서랍 속에 가득 차 있었습니다.
즉각적인 소통의 시대인 지금, 단 24분만이라도 현명하게 절제할 수 있다면 우리가 곤경에 빠져 당황하게 되는 상황을 얼마나 많이 피할 수 있을까요! 야고보는 그의 서신 속에서 인류 역사의 가장 보편적인 주제 중 하나인, 제어하지 못한 혀가 가져다주는 폐해에 대해 다음과 같이 말했습니다. “혀는 능히 길들일 사람이 없나니 쉬지 아니하는 악이요 죽이는 독이 가득한 것이라”(3:8).
우리가 화가 나서 이야기할 때, 우리는 하나님이 원하시는 영역 밖에 있게 됩니다. 하나님이 우리 마음에 절제를 주신 것을 감사하면서 우리의 혀나 우리의 펜, 심지어 우리의 컴퓨터 자판까지도 더 많이 침묵해야 합니다. 우리는 말을 할 때, 인간으로서의 망가진 모습을 서로에게 상기시켜줄 때가 너무나 많습니다.
그리스도를 통해 달라진 우리의 모습으로 다른 사람들을 놀라게 하고 싶다면 다른 무엇보다도 우리의 혀를 절제해야 합니다. 우리가 말로써, 혹은 침묵으로써 하나님께 영광을 돌릴 때, 사람들은 어떻게든 그것을 알아차리게 됩니다. |
야고보서 3:1-12
[1] 내 형제들아 너희는 선생된 우리가 더 큰 심판을 받을 줄 알고 선생이 많이 되지 말라
[2] 우리가 다 실수가 많으니 만일 말에 실수가 없는 자라면 곧 온전한 사람이라 능히 온 몸도 굴레 씌우리라
[3] 우리가 말들의 입에 재갈 물리는 것은 우리에게 순종하게 하려고 그 온 몸을 제어하는 것이라
[4] 또 배를 보라 그렇게 크고 광풍에 밀려가는 것들을 지극히 작은 키로써 사공의 뜻대로 운행하나니
[5] 이와 같이 혀도 작은 지체로되 큰 것을 자랑하도다 보라 얼마나 작은 불이 얼마나 많은 나무를 태우는가
[6] 혀는 곧 불이요 불의의 세계라 혀는 우리 지체 중에서 온 몸을 더럽히고 삶의 수레바퀴를 불사르나니 그 사르는 것이 지옥 불에서 나느니라
[7] 여러 종류의 짐승과 새와 벌레와 바다의 생물은 다 사람이 길들일 수 있고 길들여 왔거니와
[8] 혀는 능히 길들일 사람이 없나니 쉬지 아니하는 악이요 죽이는 독이 가득한 것이라
[9] 이것으로 우리가 주 아버지를 찬송하고 또 이것으로 하나님의 형상대로 지음을 받은 사람을 저주하나니
[10] 한 입에서 찬송과 저주가 나오는도다 내 형제들아 이것이 마땅하지 아니하니라
[11] 샘이 한 구멍으로 어찌 단 물과 쓴 물을 내겠느냐
[12] 내 형제들아 어찌 무화과나무가 감람 열매를, 포도나무가 무화과를 맺겠느냐 이와 같이 짠 물이 단 물을 내지 못하느니라 | |
