| Life’s Darkest Moments |

Charles Whittlesey was a hero’s hero. Leader of the so-called “Lost Battalion” in World War I, he was awarded the Medal of Honor for his bravery when his unit was trapped behind enemy lines. When the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier was dedicated, Charles was chosen to serve as pallbearer for the first soldier laid to rest there. Two weeks later, it is presumed that he ended his own life by stepping off a cruise ship in the middle of the ocean.
Like Elijah (1 Kings 19:1-7), Charles was publicly strong, but in the quiet, post-public moments, his feelings of despair set in. People today frequently face situations bigger than they can handle. Sometimes it’s temporary despair brought on by fatigue, as in Elijah’s case. He had been part of a great victory over the prophets of Baal (18:20-40), but then he feared for his life and ran into the wilderness (19:1-3). But often, it’s more than despair and it’s more than temporary. That’s why it is imperative that we talk about depression openly and compassionately.
God offers His presence to us in life’s darkest moments, which enables us, in turn, to be His presence to the hurting. Crying out for help—from others and from God—may be the strongest moment of our lives. — Randy Kilgore |

1 Kings 19:1-8
[1] And Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, also how he had executed all the prophets with the sword.
[2] Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, "So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I do not make your life as the life of one of them by tomorrow about this time."
[3] And when he saw that, he arose and ran for his life, and went to Beersheba, which belongs to Judah, and left his servant there.
[4] But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a broom tree. And he prayed that he might die, and said, "It is enough! Now, LORD, take my life, for I am no better than my fathers!"
[5] Then as he lay and slept under a broom tree, suddenly an angel touched him, and said to him, "Arise and eat."
[6] Then he looked, and there by his head was a cake baked on coals, and a jar of water. So he ate and drank, and lay down again.
[7] And the angel of the LORD came back the second time, and touched him, and said, "Arise and eat, because the journey is too great for you."
[8] So he arose, and ate and drank; and he went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights as far as Horeb, the mountain of God. | |

찰스 위틀지는 영웅 중의 영웅이었습니다. 제1차 세계대전에서 일명 “잃어버린 대대”를 이끌었던 그는 그의 부대가 적의 전선 후방에서 포위되었을 때 발휘한 용맹을 인정받아 명예훈장을 받았습니다. ‘무명용사를 위한 묘지’가 헌정되었을 때는 그곳에 안장될 첫 번째 군인의 관을 메는 사람으로 선택되기도 했습니다. 하지만 두 주 후에 그는 대양 한 가운데의 유람선에서 뛰어내려 자신의 인생을 마감한 것으로 추정됩니다.
엘리야처럼(왕상 19:1-7), 찰스는 외적으로는 강했지만 대중이 없는 조용한 순간에는 그에게 절망감이 찾아들기 시작했습니다. 오늘날 사람들은 종종 자신들이 통제할 수 없는 큰 상황에 맞닥뜨릴 때가 있습니다. 어떤 경우에는 그것이 엘리야의 경우처럼 피곤하여 찾아온 일시적인 절망감일 수 있습니다. 엘리야는 바알의 선지자들을 상대하여 큰 승리를 거두었지만(18:20-40), 곧 생명에 위협을 느껴 광야로 도망갔습니다(19:1-3). 하지만 때로는 그것이 절망 그 이상이 되어 오래도록 지속되기도 합니다. 그렇기 때문에 우리는 우울증에 대해 솔직하게, 그리고 연민어린 마음을 가지고 이야기해야만 합니다.
하나님은 우리 삶의 가장 어두운 순간에 우리와 함께하시겠다고 하십니다. 그로 인해 이제는 우리가 고통 받고 있는 이들에게 하나님의 함께하심을 보여줄 수 있게 되는 것입니다. 우리 인생에서 다른 이들과 하나님께 도움을 청하는 순간이 어쩌면 인생에서 가장 용기 있고 강하여질 수 있는 순간일지도 모릅니다. |

하나님 아버지, 때로는 우리가 삶에 압도당하여 아무것도 할 수 없는 연약한 존재임을 서로에게 고백할 수 있는
솔직한 마음을 허락하여 주시옵소서. 그리고 다른
사람들이 도움을 찾도록 도와줄 수 있는 용기를 주시고,
우리에게 도움이 필요할 때 도움을 구할 수 있는 � |

열왕기상 19:1-8
[1] 아합이 엘리야가 행한 모든 일과 그가 어떻게 모든 선지자를 칼로 죽였는지를 이세벨에게 말하니
[2] 이세벨이 사신을 엘리야에게 보내어 이르되 내가 내일 이맘때에는 반드시 네 생명을 저 사람들 중 한 사람의 생명과 같게 하리라 그렇게 하지 아니하면 신들이 내게 벌 위에 벌을 내림이 마땅하니라 한지라
[3] 그가 이 형편을 보고 일어나 자기의 생명을 위해 도망하여 유다에 속한 브엘세바에 이르러 자기의 사환을 그 곳에 머물게 하고
[4] 자기 자신은 광야로 들어가 하룻길쯤 가서 한 로뎀 나무 아래에 앉아서 자기가 죽기를 원하여 이르되 여호와여 넉넉하오니 지금 내 생명을 거두시옵소서 나는 내 조상들보다 낫지 못하니이다 하고
[5] 로뎀 나무 아래에 누워 자더니 천사가 그를 어루만지며 그에게 이르되 일어나서 먹으라 하는지라
[6] 본즉 머리맡에 숯불에 구운 떡과 한 병 물이 있더라 이에 먹고 마시고 다시 누웠더니
[7] 여호와의 천사가 또 다시 와서 어루만지며 이르되 일어나 먹으라 네가 갈 길을 다 가지 못할까 하노라 하는지라
[8] 이에 일어나 먹고 마시고 그 음식물의 힘을 의지하여 사십 주 사십 야를 가서 하나님의 산 호렙에 이르니라 | |
