Yorba Linda, CA…On Tuesday, December 9, at 7 p.m., the Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum will host a symposium on President Nixon’s decision to resign from office 40 years ago. The resignation signified the transition from the turbulence of the 1960s and early 1970s, exemplified by protests on college campuses, the draft, and the Vietnam War, toward a calmer period. A panel of historians will discuss the resignation – how it happened, why Nixon made that difficult decision, and how it affected the Presidency, our nation, and our world.
Alan Lowe, Director of the George W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum, will moderate a discussion with:
- Daniel Frick, author of Reinventing Nixon: A Cultural History of an American Obsession and Professor of American Studies at Franklin & Marshall College.
- Evan Thomas, reporter and author of eight books including Ike’s Bluff: President Eisenhower’s Secret Battle to Save the World. He is currently writing a biography of Richard Nixon.
- Barry Werth, author of 31 Days: Gerald Ford, the Nixon Pardon, and a Government in Crisis. He is also the author of The Scarlet Professor.
Nixon Library Acting Director Susan Donius said, “With the passage of 40 years, this is an opportunity to look back on the significance of the resignation and to continue to analyze and reflect upon its impact on the country.”
This event is free and open to the public and will be held in the Library’s theater, but space is limited. You can make a reservation online at www.nixonlibrary.gov
