25 June Thu, 2015 Worth It All [ 1 Corinthians 15:30 - 15:38 ] - hymn317 What you sow is not made alive unless it dies. — 1 Corinthians 15:36 By the end of the 4th century, followers of Christ were no longer being fed to the lions for the entertainment of Roman citizens. But the games of death continued until the day one man jumped out of the crowd in a bold attempt to keep two gladiators from killing each other. His name was Telemachus. As a desert monk, he had come to Rome for the holidays only to find himself unable to tolerate the bloodlust of this popular pastime. According to the 5th-century bishop and church historian Theodoret, Telemachus cried out for the violence to stop but was stoned to death by the crowd. The Emperor Honorius heard about his courageous act and ordered an end to the games. Some may question Telemachus. Was his action the only way to protest a tragic blood sport? The apostle Paul asked a similar question of himself: “Why do we stand in jeopardy every hour?”(1 Cor.15:30). In 2 Corinthians 11:22-33, he chronicled some of his travails for the love of Christ, many of which could have killed him. Had it all been worth it? In Paul’s mind the matter was settled. Trading things that will soon come to an end for honor that will last forever is a good investment. In the resurrection, a life that has been lived in behalf of Christ and others is seed for an eternity we will never regret. - Mart DeHaan     Give us courage, Father, to make and live by choices that show the difference the love of Jesus makes in our lives. Help us not to trade away eternal values for convenience and comfort. Now is the time to invest in eternity. 1 Corinthians 15:30-38 [30] And why do we stand in jeopardy every hour? [31] I affirm, by the boasting in you which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, I die daily. [32] If, in the manner of men, I have fought with beasts at Ephesus, what advantage is it to me? If the dead do not rise, "Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die!" [33] Do not be deceived: "Evil company corrupts good habits." [34] Awake to righteousness, and do not sin; for some do not have the knowledge of God. I speak this to your shame. [35] But someone will say, "How are the dead raised up? And with what body do they come?" [36] Foolish one, what you sow is not made alive unless it dies. [37] And what you sow, you do not sow that body that shall be, but mere grain--perhaps wheat or some other grain. [38] But God gives it a body as He pleases, and to each seed its own body.

2015년 06월 25일 (목) 모두 그럴만한 가치가 있다 [ 고린도전서 15:30 - 15:38 ] - 찬송가 317장 네가 뿌리는 씨가 죽지 않으면 살아나지 못하겠고 - 고린도전서 15:36 4세기 말이 되어서야 그리스도를 따르는 자들이 더 이상 로마시민들의 여흥을 위해 사자들의 먹이가 되는 일이 없게 되었습니다. 그러나 죽음의 게임은 두 검투사가 서로 죽이는 것을 막으려고 군중으로부터 한 사람이 과감히 뛰쳐나오던 그 날까지 계속되었습니다. 그 사람의 이름은 텔레마쿠스였습니다. 그는 사막의 수도사로서 휴가 기간에 로마로 왔다가, 피에 굶주린 이 같은 오락이 성행하고 있는 것을 도저히 참을 수 없었던 것입니다. 5세기 때의 주교이자 교회사가인 데오도렛에 의하면, 텔레마쿠스는 그 폭력을 멈추라고 소리쳤지만 군중들에 의해 돌에 맞아 죽었습니다. 그러나 호노리우스 황제가 그의 용감한 행동에 대해 듣고는 그 게임을 중단하라는 명령을 내렸습니다. 어떤 사람은 텔레마쿠스에 대해 의문을 제기할 수도 있습니다. 그의 행동이 저런 비참하게 피 흘리는 스포츠에 대항하는 유일한 방법이었을까? 바울사도 자신도 “어찌하여 우리가 언제나 위험을 무릅쓰리요”(고전 15:30)라고 비슷한 질문을 하였습니다. 그는 고린도후서 11:22-33에서 그리스도의 사랑을 위해 그가 겪었던 여러 어려움들을 기록하였습니다. 그 중에 많은 경우는 그를 거의 죽일 뻔 했습니다. 그 모두가 그럴만한 가치가 있었던 것일까요? 바울의 마음에 그 문제는 이미 해결되어 있었습니다. 곧 사라질 것들을 영원히 지속될 영광과 맞바꾸는 것은 훌륭한 투자입니다. 부활 때에는 그리스도와 다른 사람들을 위해 살았던 삶이 우리가 결코 후회함이 없을 영원을 위한 씨앗이 됩니다.     하나님 아버지, 예수님의 사랑이 우리의 삶에 어떤 변화를 주는지 보여줄 수 있는 삶을 선택하여 살 수 있도록 우리에게 용기를 주소서. 영원한 가치가 있는 것들을 편리하고 편안한 것들과 바꾸지 않도록 우리를 도와주소서. 지금이 바로 영원을 위해 투자할 때이다. 고린도전서 15:30-38 [30] 또 어찌하여 우리가 언제나 위험을 무릅쓰리요 [31] 형제들아 내가 그리스도 예수 우리 주 안에서 가진 바 너희에 대한 나의 자랑을 두고 단언하노니 나는 날마다 죽노라 [32] 내가 사람의 방법으로 에베소에서 맹수와 더불어 싸웠다면 내게 무슨 유익이 있으리요 죽은 자가 다시 살아나지 못한다면 내일 죽을 터이니 먹고 마시자 하리라 [33] 속지 말라 악한 동무들은 선한 행실을 더럽히나니 [34] 깨어 의를 행하고 죄를 짓지 말라 하나님을 알지 못하는 자가 있기로 내가 너희를 부끄럽게 하기 위하여 말하노라 [35] 누가 묻기를 죽은 자들이 어떻게 다시 살아나며 어떠한 몸으로 오느냐 하리니 [36] 어리석은 자여 네가 뿌리는 씨가 죽지 않으면 살아나지 못하겠고 [37] 또 네가 뿌리는 것은 장래의 형체를 뿌리는 것이 아니요 다만 밀이나 다른 것의 알맹이 뿐이로되 [38] 하나님이 그 뜻대로 그에게 형체를 주시되 각 종자에게 그 형체를 주시느니라
