Many high school students with autism or Down syndrome feel excluded and ignored. They often eat alone in a crowded cafeteria because other students don’t know how to relate to them or simply don’t care. To address this need, speech therapist Barbara Palilis began “Circle of Friends”—a program that pairs students with disabilities with nondisabled peers for lunch dates and social activities. Through this outreach, special-needs students and those nondisabled peers who befriend them continue to be enriched and changed through the gift of acceptance, friendship, and understanding.
Being included is at the heart of the gospel of Christ. “God, who is rich in mercy, ... even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved)”(Eph. 2:4-5). Through faith in Christ, we “who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ” (v.13).
Our privileged place as members of the “household of God” (v.19) should give us eyes to see and hearts to care for those around us who are ignored and alone. If each of us would reach out in caring friendship to one person today, what a difference it would make for us all. |

Ephesians 2:1-13
[1] And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins,
[2] in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience,
[3] among whom also we all once conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, just as the others.
[4] But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us,
[5] even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved),
[6] and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,
[7] that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.
[8] For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God,
[9] not of works, lest anyone should boast.
[10] For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.
[11] Therefore remember that you, once Gentiles in the flesh--who are called Uncircumcision by what is called the Circumcision made in the flesh by hands--
[12] that at that time you were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world.

다운증후군이 있거나 자폐증이 있는 많은 고등학교 학생들은 그들이 소외되고 무시당하는 기분을 느낍니다. 그들은 사람이 많은 학교식당에서도 종종 혼자서 밥을 먹습니다. 다른 학생들이 그들을 어떻게 대해야 하는지를 모르거나, 아니면 그냥 신경 쓰지 않기 때문입니다. 이런 일에 주의를 환기시키기 위해 언어치료사인 바바라 팰리리스는 점심시간이나 사회활동 중에 장애인 학생들과 비장애인 학생들을 서로 짝지어주는 “동아리” 프로그램을 시작했습니다. 이 지원 활동을 통해서 특별한 도움이 필요한 학생들과 친구를 자원한 비장애인 학생들은 서로 용납하고 친구가 되며 이해하게 되는 귀한 은사를 맛보면서 계속해서 삶의 풍요와 변화를 경험합니다.
함께 속하게 된다는 것은 그리스도의 복음의 핵심입니다. “긍휼이 풍성하신 하나님이...허물로 죽은 우리를 그리스도와 함께 살리셨고 (너희는 은혜로 구원을 받은 것이라)” (엡 2:4-5). 예수님을 믿음으로 “전에 멀리 있던 우리는... 그리스도의 피로 가까워졌습니다”(13절).
“하나님의 권속”(19절)의 일원이라는 특별한 위치에 있는 우리는 주위에 있는 소외되고 외로운 사람들을 볼 수 있는 눈과 돌보고자 하는 마음을 가져야 합니다. 만일 우리 각자가 오늘 한사람에게 돌보는 마음으로 손을 뻗친다면, 우리 모두에게 굉장한 변화가 있을 것입니다. |

에베소서 2:1-13
[1] 그는 허물과 죄로 죽었던 너희를 살리셨도다
[2] 그 때에 너희는 그 가운데서 행하여 이 세상 풍조를 따르고 공중의 권세 잡은 자를 따랐으니 곧 지금 불순종의 아들들 가운데서 역사하는 영이라
[3] 전에는 우리도 다 그 가운데서 우리 육체의 욕심을 따라 지내며 육체와 마음이 원하는 것을 하여 다른 이들과 같이 본질상 진노의 자녀이었더니
[4] 긍휼이 풍성하신 하나님이 우리를 사랑하신 그 큰 사랑을 인하여

[8] 너희는 그 은혜에 의하여 믿음으로 말미암아 구원을 받았으니 이것은 너희에게서 난 것이 아니요 하나님의 선물이라
[9] 행위에서 난 것이 아니니 이는 누구든지 자랑하지 못하게 함이라
[10] 우리는 그가 만드신 바라 그리스도 예수 안에서 선한 일을 위하여 지으심을 받은 자니 이 일은 하나님이 전에 예비하사 우리로 그 가운데서 행하게 하려 하심이니라
[11] 그러므로 생각하라 너희는 그 때에 육체로는 이방인이요 손으로 육체에 행한 할례를 받은 무리라 칭하는 자들로부터 할례를 받지 않은 무리라 칭함을 받는 자들이라
[12] 그 때에 너희는 그리스도 밖에 있었고 이스라엘 나라 밖의 사람이라 약속의 언약들에 대하여는 외인이요 세상에서 소망이 없고 하나님도 없는 자이더니
