“우리 남편이 외국에서 승진 제시를 받았어. 하지만 내가 집을 떠나는 것을 두려워하니까 남편이 마지못해 그 제안을 거절했어.”라고 내 친구가 이야기했습니다. 그녀는 그런 큰 변화에 대한 염려가 어떻게 그녀로 하여금 새로운 모험을 받아들이지 못하게 했는지를 말하면서, 집을 떠나지 않아서 놓친 것이 무엇인지 가끔 궁금하다고 말했습니다.
이스라엘 백성들은 ‘젖과 꿀’(출 33:3)이 흐르는 풍요롭고도 비옥한 땅으로 부름 받았을 때 걱정 때문에 마비될 지경이었습니다. 그리고 큰 도시에 사는 힘 센 사람들의 소식을 듣자(민 13:28) 그들은 두려워하기 시작했습니다. 대부분의 이스라엘 백성들은 그 땅으로 들어가기를 거부했습니다.
하지만 여호수아와 갈렙은 “여호와는 우리와 함께 하시느니라 그들을 두려워하지 말라”(민 14:9)라고 말하며 주님을 신뢰할 것을 촉구했습니다. 비록 그곳에 있는 사람들이 크게 보인다 하더라도, 이스라엘 백성들은 하나님이 그들과 함께하신다는 것을 믿을 수 있었습니다.
내 친구는 이스라엘 백성처럼 다른 나라로 이주하라고 명령 받은 것은 아니었습니다. 하지만 그녀는 두려움이 새로운 기회를 막아버리도록 내버려둔 것을 후회했습니다. 당신은 어떻습니까? 지금 두려운 상황에 직면해 있습니까? 만약 그렇다면, 하나님께서 당신과 함께하시고 당신을 인도하신다는 것을 믿으십시오. 결코 실패하지 않는 하나님의 사랑으로 믿음 안에서 우리는 앞으로 나아갈 수 있습니다.
• 사랑하는 하나님, 두려움 때문에 하나님을 따르는 일을 멈추지 않게 해주소서. 하나님은 언제나 저를 사랑하시고 저를 결코 떠나지 않으실 것을 알기 때문입니다.
두려움은 우리를 마비시키지만, 믿음은 우리가 하나님을 따르도록 추진시킨다.
민수기 13:25-14:9
• 사십 일 동안 땅을 정탐하기를 마치고 돌아와
• 바란 광야 가데스에 이르러 모세와 아론과 이스라엘 자손의 온 회중에게 나아와 그들에게 보고하고 그 땅의 과일을 보이고
• 모세에게 말하여 이르되 당신이 우리를 보낸 땅에 간즉 과연 그 땅에 젖과 꿀이 흐르는데 이것은 그 땅의 과일이니이다
• 그러나 그 땅 거주민은 강하고 성읍은 견고하고 심히 클 뿐 아니라 거기서 아낙 자손을 보았으며
• 아말렉인은 남방 땅에 거주하고 헷인과 여부스인과 아모리인은 산지에 거주하고 가나안인은 해변과 요단 가에 거주하더이다
• 갈렙이 모세 앞에서 백성을 조용하게 하고 이르되 우리가 곧 올라가서 그 땅을 취하자 능히 이기리라 하나
• 그와 함께 올라갔던 사람들은 이르되 우리는 능히 올라가서 그 백성을 치지 못하리라 그들은 우리보다 강하니라 하고
• 이스라엘 자손 앞에서 그 정탐한 땅을 악평하여 이르되 우리가 두루 다니며 정탐한 땅은 그 거주민을 삼키는 땅이요 거기서 본 모든 백성은 신장이 장대한 자들이며
• 거기서 네피림 후손인 아낙 자손의 거인들을 보았나니 우리는 스스로 보기에도 메뚜기 같으니 그들이 보기에도 그와 같았을 것이니라
• 온 회중이 소리를 높여 부르짖으며 백성이 밤새도록 통곡하였더라
• 이스라엘 자손이 다 모세와 아론을 원망하며 온 회중이 그들에게 이르되 우리가 애굽 땅에서 죽었거나 이 광야에서 죽었으면 좋았을 것을
• 어찌하여 여호와가 우리를 그 땅으로 인도하여 칼에 쓰러지게 하려 하는가 우리 처자가 사로잡히리니 애굽으로 돌아가는 것이 낫지 아니하랴
• 이에 서로 말하되 우리가 한 지휘관을 세우고 애굽으로 돌아가자 하매
• 모세와 아론이 이스라엘 자손의 온 회중 앞에서 엎드린지라
• 그 땅을 정탐한 자 중 눈의 아들 여호수아와 여분네의 아들 갈렙이 자기들의 옷을 찢고
• 이스라엘 자손의 온 회중에게 말하여 이르되 우리가 두루 다니며 정탐한 땅은 심히 아름다운 땅이라
• 여호와께서 우리를 기뻐하시면 우리를 그 땅으로 인도하여 들이시고 그 땅을 우리에게 주시리라 이는 과연 젖과 꿀이 흐르는 땅이니라
• 다만 여호와를 거역하지는 말라 또 그 땅 백성을 두려워하지 말라 그들은 우리의 먹이라 그들의 보호자는 그들에게서 떠났고 여호와는 우리와 함께 하시느니라 그들을 두려워하지 말라 하나
Not Fear but Faith
The Lord is with us. Do not be afraid of them. [Numbers 14:19]
“My husband was offered a promotion in another country, but I feared leaving our home, so he reluctantly declined the offer,” my friend shared with me. She explained how apprehension over such a big change kept her from embracing a new adventure, and that she sometimes wondered what they missed in not moving.
The Israelites let their anxieties paralyze them when they were called to inhabit a rich and fertile land that flowed “with milk and honey”(Ex. 33:3). When they heard the reports of the powerful people in large cities(v. 27), they started to fear. The majority of the Israelites rejected the call to enter the land.
But Joshua and Caleb urged them to trust in the Lord, saying, “Do not be afraid of the people in the land” for the “Lord is with us”(v. 9). Although the people there appeared large, they could trust the Lord to be with them.
My friend wasn’t commanded to move to another country like the Israelites were, yet she regretted letting fear close off the opportunity. What about you—do you face a fearful situation? Fear can paralyze but faith propels us to follow God.

And do not be afraid of the people of the land, because we will devour them. Their protection is gone, but the Lord is with us. Do not be afraid of them.”
