What Can’t You Give Up? 무엇을 포기할 수 없습니까? [ Hosea 11:8 - 11:11 ] - hymn 290 [Nothing] will be able to separate us from the love of God. Romans 8:39 What’s one thing you can’t give up?” the radio host asked. Listeners called in with some interesting answers. Some mentioned their families, includ- ing a husband who shared memories of a deceased wife. Others shared they can’t give up on their dreams, such as making a living in music or becoming a mother. All of us have something we trea- sure dearly—a person, a passion, a pos- session—something we can’t give up. In the book of Hosea, God tells us that He won’t give up on His chosen people Israel, His treasured possession. As Israel’s loving husband, God provided her with everything she needed: land, food, drink, clothing, and security. Yet like an adulterous spouse, Israel rejected God and sought her happiness and security elsewhere. The more God pursued her, the further she drifted away (HOSEA 11:2). However, though she had hurt Him deeply, He would not give her up (V . 8). He would discipline Israel so as to redeem her; His desire was to re-establish His relationship with her (V . 11). Today, all God’s children can have the same assurance: His love for us is a love that will never let us go (ROMANS 8:37–39). If we’ve wandered from Him, He yearns for us to return. When God disciplines us, we can be comforted that it’s a sign of His pursuit, not of His rejection. We are His treasure; He won’t give up on us. POH FANG CHIA [ 호세아 11:8 - 11:11 ] - 찬송가 290 장 [아무것도] 우리를 하나님의 사랑에서 끊을 수 없으리라 로마서 8:39 “포기할 수 없는 게 하나 있다면 그게 무엇입니까?” 라디오방송 진행자가 물었습니다. 그러자 청취자들이 전화를 걸어 흥미 있는 답들을 내어놓았습니다. 어떤 사람들은 가족이라고 말했는데, 그런 사람들 중에는 사별한 아내에 대한 기억을 나누어준 남편도 있었습니다. 또 어떤 사람들은 음악을 해서 생계를 꾸린다든가 어머니가 되겠다는 등, 자신이 지닌 꿈을 포기할 수 없다고 말했습니다. 우리 모두에게는 사람이나 열정, 소유물 등, 포기할 수 없는 아주 소중히 여기는 것들이 있습니다. 호세아서에서 하나님은 자신이 택하신 소중한 백성 이스라엘을 포기하지 않겠다고 말씀하십니다. 이스라엘의 사랑하는 남편으로서 하나님은 이스라엘에게 필요한 모든 것, 즉 땅과 먹을 것, 마실 것, 의복, 그리고 안전한 삶을 제공해주셨습니다. 그럼에도 이스라엘은 부정한 아내처럼 하나님을 거부하고 그들의 행복과 안전한 삶을 다른 곳에서 찾았습니다. 하나님이 뒤따라가면 갈수록 이스라엘은 점점 더 멀리 달아났습니다(호 11:2). 그처럼 하나님께 깊은 상처를 입혔어도, 하나님은 이스라엘을 버리지 않으셨습니다(8절). 대신 이스라엘을 구원하기 위해 그 백성들을 훈육하시며 이스라엘과의 관계를 다시 회복하기를 간절히 바라셨습니다(11절). 오늘날 모든 하나님의 자녀들은 호세아 선지자가 전한 하나님 말씀을 그대로 믿어도 됩니다. 그것은 하나님의 사랑은 우리를 결코 버리지 않는 사랑이라는 것입니다(롬 8:37-39). 만일 우리가 하나님을 떠나 방황할지라도 그분은 우리가 돌아오기를 바라십니다. 하나님이 우리를 징계하실 때에도 우리를 버리시려는 것이 아니라 우리를 부르시는 표시이기에 우리는 위로 받을 수 있습니다. 우리는 하나님께 귀한 존재입니다. 하나님은 우리를 포기하지 않으십니다.

Insight:  Hosea, a contemporary of prophets Isaiah and Micah, ministered primarily to the Northern Kingdom of Israel (Hosea 1:1). His prophetic ministry was unique because he not only communicated in words what God wanted to tell the Israelites, but he symbolically acted out these revelations (chs. 1, 3). Hosea was commanded to marry Gomer, a promiscuous woman, to show that “like an adulterous wife [Israel] is guilty of unfaithfulness to the Lord” (1:2). After Gomer’s unfaithfulness, Hosea was commanded to reconcile with her and to “love her as the Lord loves the Israelites” (3:1). These tragic examples mirror God’s unrequited love for Israel. Despite Israel’s unrepentant unfaithfulness (chs. 1–3) and warnings of ominous punishment (chs. 4–10), God promises restoration and blessing, revealing how great and relentless His love is. In His mercy, God spared them (11:8–9); and in His grace, He will redeem and restore them (vv. 10–11).
