Brother Lawrence (1614-1691) felt intimately close to God as he humbly scrubbed pots and pans in the monastery kitchen. Certainly Brother Lawrence practiced specific times of devotional prayer. But what he found more life-transforming was prayer during the workday. In his devotional classic Practicing the Presence of God, he says, “It is a great delusion to think our times of prayer ought to dif-fer from other times. We are as strictly obliged to cleave to God by action in the time of action as by prayer in the season of prayer.” In short, he advo-cated that we “pray without ceasing”(1 Thess. 5:17).
That’s a helpful reminder, because sometimes we tend to compartmental-ize our lives. Perhaps we pray only during church worship, small-group Bible study, family devotions, and personal quiet times. But what about during our workday? To pray on the job does not mean we have to fall to our knees with clasped hands and pray aloud. But it does mean that work decisions and relationships can be brought to God through-out the day.
Wherever we are and whatever we’re doing, God wants to be a part of it. When prayer enters every aspect of our lives, who knows what God might do for His glory! - Dennis Fisher |

1 Thessalonians 5:12-18
[12] And we urge you, brethren, to recognize those who labor among you, and are over you in the Lord and admonish you,
[13] and to esteem them very highly in love for their work's sake. Be at peace among yourselves.
[14] Now we exhort you, brethren, warn those who are unruly, comfort the fainthearted, uphold the weak, be patient with all.
[15] See that no one renders evil for evil to anyone, but always pursue what is good both for yourselves and for all.
[16] Rejoice always,
[17] pray without ceasing,

수도사 로렌스(1614-1691) 형제는 겸손하게 수도원 부엌에서 설거지를 하면서 하나님과 정말 가까워졌습니다. 물론 로렌스 형제는 매일 몇 번씩 시간을 정해 놓고 헌신의 경건한 기도를 드렸습니다. 그러나 로렌스 형제는 그보다 오히려 일과 중에 드리는 기도가 더 큰 삶의 변화를 가져온다는 사실을 깨달았습니다. 그는 기도에 대한 자신의 걸작 「하나님 임재의 체험」에서 이렇게 말했습니다. “기도하기 위해서는 반드시 특별한 시간을 정해놓아야 한다고 생각하는 것은 큰 착각이다. 우리는 기도 시간에 기도를 통해서 하나님과 친밀히 교제해야 하듯이 일과 시간에도 행동을 통해서도 하나님과 친밀히 교제해야 한다.” 간단히 말하면 그는 “쉬지 말고 기도하라”(살전 5:17)고 주장하고 있는 것입니다.
그것은 도움이 되는 말씀입니다. 왜냐하면 때로 우리는 우리 삶을 따로 떼어 이해하기 때문입니다. 어쩌면 우리는 교회에서의 예배, 소그룹 성경공부, 가정예배, 개인묵상 시간에만 기도할 수도 있습니다. 그렇지만 일하는 동안은 어떻습니까? 일하면서 기도하라는 것은 결코 무릎을 꿇고 두 손을 모아 큰소리로 기도하라는 것이 아닙니다. 그것은 사업상의 결정과 유대관계에 대해 하루 종일 하나님께 의지할 수 있다는 것입니다.
우리가 어디서 무엇을 하고 있든지 하나님께서는 함께 하시고 싶어 하십니다. 기도가 우리 삶의 모든 국면에서 이루어질 때 하나님께서 얼마만큼 큰 영광을 받으실 지는 아무도 모릅니다. |
데살로니가전서 5:12-18
[12] 형제들아 우리가 너희에게 구하노니 너희 가운데서 수고하고 주 안에서 너희를 다스리며 권하는 자들을 너희가 알고
[13] 저의 역사로 말미암아 사랑 안에서 가장 귀히 여기며 너희끼리 화목하라
[14] 또 형제들아 너희를 권면하노니 규모 없는 자들을 권계하며 마음이 약한 자들을 안위하고 힘이 없는 자들을 붙들어 주며 모든 사람을 대하여 오래 참으라
[15] 삼가 누가 누구에게든지 악으로 악을 갚지 말게 하고 오직 피차 대하든지 모든 사람을 대하든지 항상 선을 좇으라
