| Let birds fly above the earth across the face of the firmament of the heavens. — Genesis 1:20 |
On September 29, 1909, a young man took flight in a strange contraption that resembled a huge box kite. As he gained altitude, the pilot manipulated the levers so he could fly over New York Harbor. People looked up in amazement. In the harbor, boats celebrated by sounding their steam whistles. Crowds near the Statue of Liberty exploded with cheers at the sight of Wilbur Wright taking a flight into the heavens.
Wilbur’s brother Orville, who had piloted the first airplane flight 6 years earlier, reflected on their inspiration to fly: “The desire to fly is an idea handed down to us by our ancestors who . . . looked enviously on the birds soaring freely through space, at full speed, above all obstacles, on the infinite highway of the air.” The Wright brothers spent a great deal of time studying birds in flight before designing their planes.
In Genesis we read that “in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (1:1), and He said, “Let birds fly above the earth across the face of the firmament of the heavens” (v.20). We applaud the inventiveness of the Wright brothers. Yet, the Creator, who made creatures capable of flight in the first place, deserves the ultimate glory—for the birds and for every other creation He has made! |

Genesis 1:1-23
[1] In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
[2] The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.
[3] Then God said, "Let there be light"; and there was light.
[4] And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness.
[5] God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. So the evening and the morning were the first day.
[6] Then God said, "Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters."
[7] Thus God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament; and it was so.
[8] And God called the firmament Heaven. So the evening and the morning were the second day.
[9] Then God said, "Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear"; and it was so.
[10] And God called the dry land Earth, and the gathering together of the waters He called Seas. And God saw that it was good.
[11] Then God said, "Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb that yields seed, and the fruit tree that yields fruit according to its kind, whose seed is in itself, on the earth"; and it was so.
[12] And the earth brought forth grass, the herb that yields seed according to its kind, and the tree that yields fruit, whose seed is in itself according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.
[13] So the evening and the morning were the third day.
[14] Then God said, "Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs and seasons, and for days and years;
[15] "and let them be for lights in the firmament of the heavens to give light on the earth"; and it was so.
[16] Then God made two great lights： the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night. He made the stars also.
[17] God set them in the firmament of the heavens to give light on the earth,
[18] and to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good.
[19] So the evening and the morning were the fourth day.
[20] Then God said, "Let the waters abound with an abundance of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the face of the firmament of the heavens."
[21] So God created great sea creatures and every living thing that moves, with which the waters abounded, according to their kind, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.
[22] And God blessed them, saying, "Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth."
[23] So the evening and the morning were the fifth day. | |

1909년 9월 29일에 한 젊은 청년이 커다란 상자 연과 비슷하게 생긴 이상한 기계를 타고 하늘을 날았습니다. 고도가 높아가자, 조종사는 뉴욕 항구 위로 날도록 조종간을 움직였습니다. 사람들은 놀라서 쳐다봤습니다. 항구에서는 배들이 뱃고동소리를 울리며 축하했습니다. 자유의 여신상 근처에 있던 군중들은 윌버 라이트가 하늘로 솟아오르는 광경에 환호성을 올렸습니다.
이미 6년 전에 첫 비행체를 조종했던 윌버의 동생 오빌은 날고 싶은 자신들의 열망을 이렇게 표현했습니다. “날고 싶은 욕망은 선조들로부터 물려받은 것입니다. 그들은 창공의 끝없는 고속도로를 모든 장애물을 넘어 최고의 속도로 자유로이 날아오르는 새들을 부러움으로 바라보았던 거죠.” 라이트 형제는 비행기를 설계하기 전에 창공을 나는 새들을 관찰하는데 엄청난 시간을 보냈습니다.
창세기에서 우리는 “태초에 하나님이 천지를 창조하시니라”(1:1), “땅 위 하늘의 궁창에는 새가 날으라 하시고”(1:20)라는 구절을 읽습니다. 우리는 라이트 형제의 창의력에 찬사를 보냅니다. 그러나 나는 것을 가장 먼저 만드신 창조주야말로, 그가 만드신 새들과 모든 피조물들로 인하여 최고의 영광을 받으시기에 합당하십니다! |

[1] 태초에 하나님이 천지를 창조하시니라
[2] 땅이 혼돈하고 공허하며 흑암이 깊음 위에 있고 하나님의 신은 수면에 운행하시니라
[3] 하나님이 가라사대 빛이 있으라 하시매 빛이 있었고
[4] 그 빛이 하나님의 보시기에 좋았더라 하나님이 빛과 어두움을 나누사
[5] 빛을 낮이라 칭하시고 어두움을 밤이라 칭하시니라 저녁이 되며 아침이 되니 이는 첫째 날이니라
[6] 하나님이 가라사대 물 가운데 궁창이 있어 물과 물로 나뉘게 하리라 하시고
[7] 하나님이 궁창을 만드사 궁창 아래의 물과 궁창 위의 물로 나뉘게 하시매 그대로 되니라
[8] 하나님이 궁창을 하늘이라 칭하시니라 저녁이 되며 아침이 되니 이는 둘째 날이니라
[9] 하나님이 가라사대 천하의 물이 한 곳으로 모이고 뭍이 드러나라 하시매 그대로 되니라
[10] 하나님이 뭍을 땅이라 칭하시고 모인 물을 바다라 칭하시니라 하나님의 보시기에 좋았더라
[11] 하나님이 가라사대 땅은 풀과 씨 맺는 채소와 각기 종류대로 씨 가진 열매 맺는 과목을 내라 하시매 그대로 되어
[12] 땅이 풀과 각기 종류대로 씨 맺는 채소와 각기 종류대로 씨 가진 열매 맺는 나무를 내니 하나님의 보시기에 좋았더라
[13] 저녁이 되며 아침이 되니 이는 셋째 날이니라
[14] 하나님이 가라사대 하늘의 궁창에 광명이 있어 주야를 나뉘게 하라 또 그 광명으로 하여 징조와 사시와 일자와 연한이 이루라
[15] 또 그 광명이 하늘의 궁창에 있어 땅에 비취라 하시고 (그대로 되니라)
[16] 하나님이 두 큰 광명을 만드사 큰 광명으로 낮을 주관하게 하시고 작은 광명으로 밤을 주관하게 하시며 또 별들을 만드시고
[17] 하나님이 그것들을 하늘의 궁창에 두어 땅에 비취게 하시며
[18] 주야를 주관하게 하시며 빛과 어두움을 나뉘게 하시니라 하나님의 보시기에 좋았더라
[19] 저녁이 되며 아침이 되니 이는 넷째 날이니라
[20] 하나님이 가라사대 물들은 생물로 번성케 하라 땅 위 하늘의 궁창에는 새가 날으라 하시고
[21] 하나님이 큰 물고기와 물에서 번성하여 움직이는 모든 생물을 그 종류대로, 날개 있는 모든 새를 그 종류대로 창조하시니 하나님의 보시기에 좋았더라
[22] 하나님이 그들에게 복을 주어 가라사대 생육하고 번성하여 여러 바다 물에 충만하라 새들도 땅에 번성하라 하시니라
[23] 저녁이 되며 아침이 되니 이는 다섯째 날이니라 | |
