| A SENSE OF CONCERN |

Statistics are tricky. While numbers give us information, sometimes they can also desensitize us to the people those numbers represent. This hit me recently as I read a statistic: Every year 15 million people die from hunger. That’s chilling, and for those of us who live in cultures of plenty, it’s hard to fathom. In 2008, nearly 9 million children died before their fifth birthday, with a third of those deaths related to hunger. These are staggering numbers, but they are much more than numbers. They are individuals loved by God.
We can show the Father’s heart of love by responding to people’s physical needs. Solomon wrote, “He who oppresses the poor reproaches his Maker, but he who honors Him has mercy on the needy”(Prov. 14:31). We can show mercy to the needy by volunteering at a soup kitchen, assisting in a job search, financially supporting the drilling of wells in places in need of fresh water, distributing food in poverty-stricken regions, teaching a trade, or providing lunches for school children.
Accepting this responsibility honors the Father and His concern for all. And those who are starving might be better able to hear the message of the cross if their stomachs aren’t growling. - Bill Crowder |

Galatians 2:1-10
[1] Then after fourteen years I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, and also took Titus with me.
[2] And I went up by revelation, and communicated to them that gospel which I preach among the Gentiles, but privately to those who were of reputation, lest by any means I might run, or had run, in vain.
[3] Yet not even Titus who was with me, being a Greek, was compelled to be circumcised.
[4] And this occurred because of false brethren secretly brought in (who came in by stealth to spy out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus, that they might bring us into bondage),
[5] to whom we did not yield submission even for an hour, that the truth of the gospel might continue with you.
[6] But from those who seemed to be something--whatever they were, it makes no difference to me; God shows personal favoritism to no man--for those who seemed to be something added nothing to me.
[7] But on the contrary, when they saw that the gospel for the uncircumcised had been committed to me, as the gospel for the circumcised was to Peter
[8] (for He who worked effectively in Peter for the apostleship to the circumcised also worked effectively in me toward the Gentiles),
[9] and when James, Cephas, and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that had been given to me, they gave me and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship, that we should go to the Gentiles and they to the circumcised.
[10] They desired only that we should remember the poor, the very thing which I also was eager to do. | |

통계란 참으로 묘한 것 같습니다. 통계 숫자는 정보를 제공해 주지만, 때로는 그 숫자로 나타난 사람들에 대한 우리의 감각을 둔하게 만들 수도 있습니다. 며칠 전, 내가 이렇게 느끼게 된 것은 매년 1,500만 명이 굶주림으로 죽는다는 통계 때문입니다. 그것은 끔찍한 일이며 풍족한 사회에 살고 있는 우리들로서는 상상하기 어려운 일입니다. 2008년에는 약 900만 명의 어린이가 다섯 살이 되기 전에 죽었으며, 그들 중 삼분의 일은 굶주림이 원인이었다고 합니다. 이것은 엄청난 숫자이지만, 숫자 이상의 의미가 있습니다. 왜냐하면 그들은 하나님이 사랑하시는 사람들이기 때문입니다.
우리는 궁핍한 사람들을 물질적으로 도움으로써 하나님 아버지의 사랑을 전할 수 있습니다. 솔로몬은 “가난한 사람을 학대하는 자는 그를 지으신 이를 멸시하는 자요 궁핍한 사람을 불쌍히 여기는 자는 주를 공경하는 자니라”(잠 14:31)라고 기록하였습니다. 우리는 무료급식소에서 자원봉사를 하거나, 직장을 구하는 것을 도와주거나, 물이 필요한 곳에 우물을 파는데 필요한 자금지원을 하거나, 가난에 시달리는 지역에 음식을 나눠주거나, 기술을 가르치거나, 또는 어린 학생들에게 점심을 제공함으로써 궁핍한 사람들을 도울 수 있습니다.
이러한 책임을 감당하는 일은 하나님 아버지를 영예롭게 하고 모든 사람들에 대한 그분의 관심을 존중하는 것입니다. 그리고 굶주린 자들은 자신들의 배고픔이 사라지게 되면 십자가의 메시지에 더 귀를 기울이게 될 것입니다. |

[1] 십사 년 후에 내가 바나바와 함께 디도를 데리고 다시 예루살렘에 올라갔노니
[2] 계시를 인하여 올라가 내가 이방 가운데서 전파하는 복음을 저희에게 제출하되 유명한 자들에게 사사로이 한 것은 내가 달음질하는 것이나 달음질한 것이 헛되지 않게 하려 함이라
[3] 그러나 나와 함께 있는 헬라인 디도라도 억지로 할례를 받게 아니하였으니
[4] 이는 가만히 들어온 거짓 형제 까닭이라 저희가 가만히 들어온 것은 그리스도 예수 안에서 우리의 가진 자유를 엿보고 우리를 종으로 삼고자 함이로되
[5] 우리가 일시라도 복종치 아니하였으니 이는 복음의 진리로 너희 가운데 항상 있게 하려 함이라
[6] 유명하다는 이들 중에 (본래 어떤 이들이든지 내게 상관이 없으며 하나님은 사람의 외모를 취하지 아니하시나니) 저 유명한 이들은 내게 더하여 준 것이 없고

[8] 베드로에게 역사하사 그를 할례자의 사도로 삼으신 이가 또한 내게 역사하사 나를 이방인에게 사도로 삼으셨느니라
