One of the qualities I most admire in others is the gift of quiet, behind-the-scenes encouragement. I remember arriving home from a stay in the hospital and fi-nding that my friend Jackie (who had surgery a few days earlier) sent me a book of God’s promises.
My Uncle Bob was so thankful for the people who cared for him at the cancer center that he sent hundreds of complimentary notes to their work supervisors.
My cousin Brenda experienced the agonizing loss of a child almost 20 years ago, and now her quiet deeds of compassion are treasured by many.
Often it is the very people who have experienced the most suffering. physical and emotional.who are the most abundant providers of encouragement to others.
In Acts, we read about Barnabas, who was known as the “Son of Encouragement” (4:36). He was “a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and of faith” (11:24) and encouraged others so “that with purpose of heart they should continue with the Lord” (v.23). His acts of encouragement must have had a wide and strong sphere of influence.
Just as we have been blessed with encouragement, let’s be a modern-day Daughter or Son of Encouragement to others. -Cindy Hess Kasper |

Acts 11:22-26
[22] Then news of these things came to the ears of the church in Jerusalem, and they sent out Barnabas to go as far as Antioch.
[23] When he came and had seen the grace of God, he was glad, and encouraged them all that with purpose of heart they should continue with the Lord.
[24] For he was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and of faith. And a great many people were added to the Lord.
[25] Then Barnabas departed for Tarsus to seek Saul.
[26] And when he had found him, he brought him to Antioch. So it was that for a whole year they assembled with the church and taught a great many people. And the disciples were first called Christians in Antioch. | |

타인의 성품 중 내가 가장 감탄하는 것은 말없이 뒤에서 위로해주는 은사입니다. 내가 병원에 입원해 있다가 집으로 돌아왔을 때, 나보다 며칠 먼저 수술을 받은 친구인 재키가 보내온 하나님의 약속에 관한 책이 집에 있었던 것을 기억합니다.
나의 삼촌 밥은 암센터에서 자기를 돌보아준 사람들이 너무 고마워서 그들의 직장 상사들에게 수백 통의 짧은 감사편지를 보냈습니다.
나의 사촌 브렌다는 거의 20년 전에 자기 아이를 잃는 극심한 괴로움을 겪었지만, 지금은 묵묵히 다른 사람들의 고통을 함께 나눔으로써 많은 사람들이 그녀를 귀하게 여기고 있습니다.
다른 사람들에게 가장 많은 위로를 주는 사람들은 보통 육체적으로나 정신적으로 극심한 고통을 겪었던 바로 그런 사람들입니다.
사도행전을 보면, 바나바는 “위로의 아들”(4:36, 표준새번역)로 알려져 있었습니다. 그는 “착한 사람이요 성령과 믿음이 충만한 사람”(11:24)으로, 다른 사람들에게 “굳건한 마음으로 주와 함께 머물러 있으라”(23절)라고 권면하였습니다. 그의 이런 격려의 행동들은 넓고 큰 영향력을 끼쳤음에 틀림없습니다.
우리가 지금까지 위로의 축복을 받아온 것처럼, 이제는 다른 사람들을 위한 현대판 “위로의 자녀”가 되도록 합시다. |
