| The Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost. — Luke 19:10 |
Lachlan Macquarie, governor of New South Wales from 1810–1821, had a way of making everyone feel included in the new colony. When the “exclusives” (free settlers, civil servants, and military officers) shunned the society of the “emancipists” (transported convicts given conditional or absolute pardon), Governor Macquarie insisted that they be treated as social equals.
Jesus showed interest in Zacchaeus, a shunned tax collector in Jericho, and included him in the recipients of His salvation plan (Luke 19:1-10). A marginalized and hated man because of his profession, Zacchaeus was desperate to see Jesus and climbed a tree to get a glimpse of Him. When Jesus passed by, He saw Zacchaeus’ desire and told him to come down because he had a divine appointment at his house. Some complained that Jesus was spending time with a sinner. His loving attention changed Zacchaeus’ life. He repented and offered restitution for those he had defrauded. Salvation had come to his house.
Jesus’ mission was simple: Diligently search for lost people, whatever their social standing, and offer them God’s salvation plan. As followers of Christ, we too have that as our mission. |

Luke 19:1-10
[1] Then Jesus entered and passed through Jericho.
[2] Now behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus who was a chief tax collector, and he was rich.
[3] And he sought to see who Jesus was, but could not because of the crowd, for he was of short stature.
[4] So he ran ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see Him, for He was going to pass that way.
[5] And when Jesus came to the place, He looked up and saw him, and said to him, "Zacchaeus, make haste and come down, for today I must stay at your house."
[6] So he made haste and came down, and received Him joyfully.
[7] But when they saw it, they all complained, saying, "He has gone to be a guest with a man who is a sinner."
[8] Then Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, "Look, Lord, I give half of my goods to the poor; and if I have taken anything from anyone by false accusation, I restore fourfold."
[9] And Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house, because he also is a son of Abraham;
[10] "for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost." | |

1810년부터 1821년까지 호주의 뉴사우스웨일스 주지사였던 라클란 매쿼리는 새 정착지의 모든 사람들이 한 가족처럼 느끼게 하는 능력을 갖고 있었습니다. “특권층”(자유정착민, 공무원, 군대장교)의 사람들이 “출소자”(조건부 혹은 완전 사면을 받아 본국에서 이송된 범죄자)들을 사회로부터 배제시키려 하자, 매쿼리 주지사는 그들도 사회적으로 동등한 대우를 받아야 한다고 주장하였습니다.
예수님은 사회로부터 외면당한 여리고의 세리 삭개오에게 관심을 보이시고 구원받을 사람들 속에 그를 포함시키셨습니다(눅 19:1-10). 그의 직업 때문에 무시 받고 미움 받았던 삭개오는 예수님이 너무나 보고 싶어 잠깐이라도 한번 보려고 나무 위로 올라갔습니다. 예수님이 지나가시다가 삭개오의 간절한 마음을 보시고 그의 집에서 하나님의 뜻을 이루시고자 그에게 나무에서 내려오라고 말씀하셨습니다. 어떤 이들은 예수님이 죄인과 함께 하신다고 불평했지만, 예수님이 보여주신 사랑과 관심이 삭개오의 삶을 변화시켰습니다. 그는 회개하고, 그동안 속였던 사람들에게 배상하겠다고 약속했습니다. 구원이 그의 집에 이르렀습니다.
예수님의 사명은 간단했습니다. 사회적 지위에 상관없이, 잃어버린 사람들을 부지런히 찾아 하나님의 구원 계획을 이루는 것입니다. 그리스도를 따르는 우리도 이것을 우리의 사명으로 삼아야합니다. |

누가복음 19:1-10
[1] 예수께서 여리고로 들어가 나가시더라
[2] 삭개오라 이름하는 자가 있으니 세리장이요 또한 부자라
[3] 그가 예수께서 어떠한 사람인가 하여 보고자 하되 키가 작고 사람이 많아 할 수 없어
[4] 앞으로 달려가서 보기 위하여 돌무화과나무에 올라가니 이는 예수께서 그리로 지나가시게 됨이러라
[5] 예수께서 그 곳에 이르사 쳐다보시고 이르시되 삭개오야 속히 내려오라 내가 오늘 네 집에 유하여야 하겠다 하시니
[6] 급히 내려와 즐거워하며 영접하거늘
[7] 뭇 사람이 보고 수군거려 이르되 저가 죄인의 집에 유하러 들어갔도다 하더라
[8] 삭개오가 서서 주께 여짜오되 주여 보시옵소서 내 소유의 절반을 가난한 자들에게 주겠사오며 만일 누구의 것을 빼앗은 일이 있으면 네 갑절이나 갚겠나이다
[9] 예수께서 이르시되 오늘 구원이 이 집에 이르렀으니 이 사람도 아브라함의 자손임이로다
