I met a man who was absolutely convinced that God couldn’t forgive him for the things he’d done. An older man took him under his wing, and a year later, I was delighted that the younger man had not only accepted Jesus as his Savior but was also consuming Scripture ravenously. Three years later, though, when I talked with him, I noticed that his enthusiasm had been re-placed by grumbling: “I just don’t understand how God can let evil people prosper while so many of His children (including himself, he might have added) are struggling to make ends meet.” The grumbling ate at the joy of his faith.
Like so many of us, he had forgotten how much he had needed Christ’s grace. The gratitude he had felt when he first received the Lord was now lost. This reminds us of the vineyard workers in Jesus’ parable (Matt. 20:1-16). Their focus shifted to what was happening to and for other people (vv.10-12).
While God owes us nothing, He freely gives us the salvation He promises when we accept Christ. He then adds to His generosity by sending His Spirit to help us in this life as we prepare for the joy of eternity with Him. The seeming unfairness of life demands that we keep our eyes on Him and His Word-not on others. - Randy Kilgore
Lord, I admit that my focus at times gets drawn to others and what they have. Forgive me and help me to stop grumbling. You are good to me and provide what I need. Thank You. Amen.

Matthew 20:1-16
[1] "For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire men to work in his vineyard. [2] He agreed to pay them a denarius for the day and sent them into his vineyard. [3] "About the third hour he went out and saw others standing in the marketplace doing nothing. [4] He told them, 'You also go and work in my vineyard, and I will pay you whatever is right.' [5] So they went. "He went out again about the sixth hour and the ninth hour and did the same thing. [6] About the eleventh hour he went out and found still others standing around. He asked them, 'Why have you been standing here all day long doing nothing?' [7] "'Because no one has hired us,' they answered. "He said to them, 'You also go and work in my vineyard.' [8] "When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, 'Call the workers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last ones hired and going on to the first.' [9] "The workers who were hired about the eleventh hour came and each received a denarius. [10] So when those came who were hired first, they expected to receive more. But each one of them also received a denarius. [11] When they received it, they began to grumble against the landowner. [12] 'These men who were hired last worked only one hour,' they said, 'and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the work and the heat of the day.' [13] "But he answered one of them, 'Friend, I am not being unfair to you. Didn't you agree to work for a denarius? [14] Take your pay and go. I want to give the man who was hired last the same as I gave you. [15] Don't I have the right to do what I want with my own money? Or are you envious because I am generous?' [16] "So the last will be first, and the first will be last."

하나님은 뭐하시나?

내 것을 가지고 내 뜻대로 할 것이 아니냐 - 마태복음 20:15
자신이 한 일 때문에 하나님이 자기를 용서하지 않을 거라고 절대적으로 확신하는 한 남자를 만난 적이 있습니다. 하지만 한 노인이 그를 보살펴주기 시작했고, 일 년이 지나자 그 젊은이가 예수님을 구주로 받아들이고 성경도 열심히 탐독하고 있는 것을 보고는 정말 기뻤습니다. 그러나 삼년 후 그와 대화를 나누었을 때 그의 열심이 불평으로 바뀌어버렸다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. “어떻게 하나님은 그렇게 많은 자기 자녀들이(아마 젊은이 자신도 포함시킨 듯 했습니다) 겨우겨우 살아가고 있는데도, 나쁜 사람들이 잘 살도록 그대로 내버려두시는지 알 수 없습니다.” 불평은 그의 믿음의 기쁨을 앗아가 버렸습니다.
우리들 대부분이 그렇듯이, 그는 자신이 얼마나 하나님의 은혜를 필요로 했는지를 잊어버렸습니다. 처음 주님을 영접하고 느꼈던 감사가 지금은 사라졌습니다. 이 일은 예수님의 비유 중에 나오는 포도원 일꾼들을 생각나게 해줍니다(마 20:1-16). 그들의 초점이 다른 사람들에게 일어난 일로 옮겨가 버렸던 것입니다(10-12절).
하나님은 우리에게 빚진 것이 하나도 없으시지만, 우리가 그리스도를 영접하면 약속하신 구원을 값없이 우리에게 주십니다. 게다가 하나님은 관대하셔서 우리에게 성령님을 보내시고, 우리가 하나님과 함께 누리게 될 영생의 기쁨을 이 땅에서 준비하며 살아갈 수 있도록 도와주십니다. 삶에서 불공평해 보이는 것들을 보게 될 때, 다른 것들이 아닌 오직 하나님과 하나님의 말씀에 우리의 초점을 맞추라고 권면 합니다.
주님, 가끔씩 저의 시선이 다른 사람들과 그들의 소유로 향하게 됨을 고백합니다. 저를 용서해주시고
불평을 멈추도록 도와주소서. 선하시며
저의 필요를 채워주시는 주님,
감사합니다. 아멘.
만족하기 위해 당신이 먼저 알아야 할 사실은 하나님은 선하시다는 것이다.
