When he was a teenager, my son asked me one of those questions that make you earn your pay as a parent. “Dad,” Steve inquired, “if God has existed for eternity, what was He doing before He created the universe?”
So, what was happening in the eons before “God created the heavens and the earth”? (Gen. 1:1). For one thing, we know that there was “wisdom” before creation itself, which came from God’s character. Wisdom, personified in Proverbs 8:23, said, “I have been established from everlasting, from the beginning, before there was ever an earth.”
Also, we know that God’s salvation plan of grace was in the works before the world was hung in its place. In 2 Timothy 1:9, we read that grace “was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began.” Likewise, Titus 1:2 says that eternal life was promised “before time began.” We also know that Jesus was glorified and loved in God’s presence “before the world was” (John 17:5; see also v.24).
These tiny glimpses of God before He created the earth help us see a little of the essence and magnitude of our awesome, eternal God. We see His majesty and greatness. Amazing, isn’t it? We worship a God who existed from the beginning . . . and beyond. -Dave Branon

창세 전에
[ 창세기 1:1 - 1:31 ] - 찬송가478장
아버지여 창세 전에 내가 아버지와 함께 가졌던 영화로써 지금도 아버지와 함께 나를 영화롭게 하옵소서 - 요한복음 17:5
내 아들 스티브가 십대였을 때 부모노릇이 힘들다는 것을 절실히 느끼게 만드는 질문을 하나 했습니다. “아빠, 하나님께서 영원히 존재해 오셨다면 우주를 창조하시기 전에는 무엇을 하고 계셨나요?”
과연 만세 전 “하나님이 천지를 창조”(창 1:1)하시기 전에는 무슨 일이 일어나고 있었을까요? 먼저, 우리는 창조 전에 하나님의 품성에서 비롯된 “지혜”가 있었다는 것을 압니다. 잠언 8장 23절에 의인화되어 있는 지혜는 “만세 전부터, 태초부터, 땅이 생기기 전부터 내가 세움을 받았나니”라고 하고 있습니다.
또한, 우리는 하나님의 은혜로 주는 구원 계획이 세상이 존재하기 전부터 계획되어 있었다는 것을 압니다. 디모데후서 1장 9절은 “영원 전부터 그리스도 예수 안에서 우리에게 주신” 은혜를 말하고 있습니다. 이와 비슷하게 디도서 1장 2절은 영생은 “영원 전부터” 약속하신 것이라고 말합니다. 그리고 우리는 “창세 전에” 하나님께서 예수님을 영화롭게 하시고 사랑하셨다는 것도 압니다(요 17:5; 24절 참조).
창세 전의 하나님의 모습을 이렇게 희미하게나마 알게 됨으로써 우리는 경외의 하나님, 영원하신 하나님의 본질과 그 위대하심을 조금이나마 가늠해볼 수 있습니다. 하나님은 장엄하시고 위대하십니다. 놀랍지 않습니까? 우리는 창세 전부터, 그리고 그 이후로도 계속 계셨던 하나님을 예배하는 것입니다.
위대하신 우주의 하나님, 우리는 하나님이
알파와 오메가시요, 처음과 나중이시며, 그보다 훨씬
더하신 분임을 알고놀라움을 금치 못합니다.
