In Lansing, Michigan, during the winter, we don’t get many sunny days. But last year God blessed us with one of those beautiful days, and it seemed that almost everyone was thanking God, except me. As I left my office, a man said, “What a wonderful day we’re having. This is a gift from God!” To which I replied, “Yes, but we’re getting snow later this week.” What ingratitude!
In his letters, the apostle Paul helped his readers to develop a theology of gratitude. He wrote about thanksgiving more often than any other New Testament author. From the 23 times he used the word, we learn a few lessons about thanksgiving.
Thanksgiving was always directed toward God and never toward people. People were gifts from God, and Paul thanked God for their growth, love, and faith (1 Cor.1:4; 1 Thess.1:2). Thanksgiving is given through Jesus for everything (Col.3:15,17). Paul believed followers of Jesus could be thankful for everything because God is sovereign, and He is working things out for the believers’ good (1 Thess.5:18).
May we intentionally be aware of God’s gifts all around us, and respond with gratitude. In response to God’s gifts, it’s natural to say, “Thank You, Lord.” - Marvin Williams
Lord, for days that are sunny or gray we simply want to say, Thank You! And for the daily grace You give us in Your Son, may we always be faithful to say, Thank You! You are so good to us.
Gratitude is a natural response to God’s grace.

감사하라

범사에 감사하라 이것이 그리스도 예수 안에서 너희를 향하신 하나님의 뜻이니라 - 데살로니가전서 5:18
미시간 주에 있는 랜싱 시에서는 겨울에 맑은 날을 보기가 쉽지 않습니다. 그러나 지난해 어느 하루 하나님께서 맑은 날로 축복해주셨는데, 나를 빼고는 모든 사람이 하나님께 감사하는 것 같았습니다. 내가 사무실을 나오는데 어떤 사람이 “날씨가 정말 좋군요. 하나님의 선물입니다!”라고 말했습니다. 그 말에 나는 “그렇기는 한데, 주말에 눈이 온다고 하던데요.”라고 말했습니다. 얼마나 감사할 줄 모르는 말입니까!
바울사도는 그의 편지들을 통해 그것을 읽는 사람들이 감사하는 신앙을 키울 수 있도록 도와주었습니다. 그는 신약성경 저자들 중 어느 누구보다도 감사에 대해 많이 썼습니다. 그가 스물 세 번이나 썼던 이 말을 통하여 우리는 감사에 대한 몇 가지 교훈을 배울 수 있습니다.
그의 감사는 늘 하나님을 향해서만 드려졌고, 사람을 향해서는 결코 하지 않았다는 것입니다. 바울은 사람들을 하나님이 주신 선물로 생각하고, 그들의 성숙해짐과 사랑, 그리고 믿음에 대해 하나님께 감사했습니다(고전 1:4; 살전 1:2).
그의 감사는 범사에 예수님의 이름으로 드려졌습니다(골 3:15,17). 바울은 하나님이 모든 것을 주관하시고, 믿는 자들의 유익을 위해 일하시기 때문에 예수님을 따르는 자들은 범사에 감사할 수 있다고 믿었습니다(살전 5:18).
하나님이 우리 주변에 허락하신 선물들을 의도적으로 의식하고 감사하시기 바랍니다. 하나님이 주신 선물에 대해, “하나님, 감사합니다.”라고 반응하는 것은 자연스러운 일입니다.
하나님, 날씨가 맑든 흐리든 우리는 그저 “감사합니다!”라고 말하기 원합니다. 그리고 매일 하나님의 아들 안에서 주시는 은혜에도 늘 변치 않고 “감사합니다!”라고 말하게 해주십시오. 하나님은 우리에게 너무나도 좋으신 분이십니다.
감사는 하나님의 은혜에 대한 자연스러운 응답이다.
