I admire people who can articulate their beliefs and persuade others with their rhetoric. Some call it “the gift of gab” or “having a way with words.” Others call it“eloquence.”
Apollos had that gift. We are told that he was “an eloquent man and mighty in the Scriptures” (Acts 18:24). But although he taught accurately about Christ, he preached only of the baptism of John which was a baptism of repentance from sin (v.25; 19:4).
Apollos knew about Jesus’ teachings but may not have known about His death and resurrection and that the Spirit had now come (Acts 2). His teaching was incomplete because he didn’t know about being filled with the Spirit for daily empowerment.
So Priscilla and Aquila, a wife and husband who were friends of Paul, invited Apollos into their home to correct his teaching. Although he was highly educated and knew the Scriptures well, Apollos humbly accepted their instruction. As a result, Apollos was able to continue his ministry, but with newfound understanding.
Psalm 25:9 reminds us that God “guides the humble in what is right and teaches them His way” (NIV). If we have a spirit of humility, we can be taught by God and be used to touch the lives of others. - Cindy Hess Kasper

[24] Meanwhile a Jew named Apollos, a native of Alexandria, came to Ephesus. He was a learned man, with a thorough knowledge of the Scriptures. [25] He had been instructed in the way of the Lord, and he spoke with great fervor and taught about Jesus accurately, though he knew only the baptism of John. [26] He began to speak boldly in the synagogue. When Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they invited him to their home and explained to him the way of God more adequately. [27] When Apollos wanted to go to Achaia, the brothers encouraged him and wrote to the disciples there to welcome him. on arriving, he was a great help to those who by grace had believed. [28] For he vigorously refuted the Jews in public debate, proving from the Scriptures that Jesus was the Christ.

언변이 좋으면서도 겸손한
[ 사도행전 18:24 - 18:28 ] - 찬송가341장
온유한 자에게 그의 도를 가르치시리로다 - 시편 25:9
나는 훌륭한 말솜씨로 자신의 믿음을 조리 있게 잘 설명하고 다른 사람들을 잘 설득하는 사람들을 존경합니다. 사람에 따라서는 그것을 “입심이 좋다” 또는 “말 재주가 있다”라고도 하고, 어떤 사람들은 “언변이 좋다”라고 하기도 합니다.
아볼로는 그런 은사를 가졌습니다. 그는 “언변이 좋고 성경에 능통한 자”(행 18:24)였습니다. 그러나 그는 그리스도에 대해서는 정확하게 가르쳤지만, 그의 설교는 죄로부터 회개하는 요한의 세례만을 다루었습니다(25절; 19:4).
아볼로는 예수님의 가르침은 잘 알고 있었지만, 그리스도의 죽음과 부활, 그리고 지금 성령님이 오셨다는 것에 대해서는 잘 몰랐던 것 같습니다(행 2장). 그는 매일 능력을 얻기 위해서는 성령 충만해야 한다는 것을 몰랐기 때문에 그의 가르침은 완전하지 못했습니다.
바울의 동역자인 브리스길라와 아굴라 부부는 아볼로를 그들의 집으로 초대하여 그의 가르침을 바로 잡아주었습니다. 아볼로는 비록 학식이 높고 성경에 통달하고 있었지만, 겸손하게 그들의 가르침을 받아들였습니다. 그 결과, 아볼로는 새로운 깨달음으로 그의 사역을 계속할 수가 있었습니다.
시편 25편 9절은 우리에게 이렇게 상기시켜 줍니다. 하나님이 “온유한 자를 정의로 지도하심이여 온유한 자에게 그의 도를 가르치시리로다.” 우리에게 겸손한 마음이 있으면 하나님의 가르치심을 받을 수 있고, 또 다른 이들의 삶을 변화시키는 데에도 사용될 수 있습니다.
주님처럼 나도 그의 온유함과 겸손함을 더 닮기 원하네 일에 더 힘쓰고 진실해지는데 더 용기를 내며 주님이 명하신 일에 더 헌신하기 원하네
