Hold such men in esteem; because for the work of Christ he came close to death. — Philippians 2:29-30
During basic training, Desmond Doss irritated his drill instructor and fellow soldiers. A pacifist by conviction, he refused to carry a weapon into battle, and this made his peers doubt his courage. Trained as a medic, the young Christian had no qualms about facing combat. But his goal was to save lives.
Doubts about Doss would change, however, when his military unit faced combat. During the World War II Battle of Okinawa, he ducked under machine gun fire to pull the wounded to safety. He prayed, “Lord, give me the strength to save just one more wounded soldier.” Eventually he lowered more than 70 injured men down a hill for further medical attention. For his efforts, Desmond Doss was awarded the Medal of Honor—the highest honor his country could bestow.
Scripture tells of another Christian who took great personal risks to help others. Of Epaphroditus, Paul wrote, “Hold such men in esteem; because for the work of Christ he came close to death, not regarding his life” (Phil. 2:29-30).
Around the world today, many believers risk their lives for the cause of Christ. Let’s pray that our God will protect them as they serve Him under threatening circumstances.
O Lord, listen to our cry for mercy; in Your faithfulnesscome to the relief of those who are in danger because oftheir faith. For Your name’s sake, preserve their lives;in Your righteousness,
bring them out of trouble.
Courage is not having strength to go on—it is going on when you don’t have the strength.
Philippians 2:25-30
[25] But I think it is necessary to send back to you Epaphroditus, my brother, fellow worker and fellow soldier, who is also your messenger, whom you sent to take care of my needs. [26] For he longs for all of you and is distressed because you heard he was ill. [27] Indeed he was ill, and almost died. But God had mercy on him, and not on him only but also on me, to spare me sorrow upon sorrow. [28] Therefore I am all the more eager to send him, so that when you see him again you may be glad and I may have less anxiety. [29] Welcome him in the Lord with great joy, and honor men like him, [30] because he almost died for the work of Christ, risking his life to make up for the help you could not give me.

구주를 위해 겪는 위험

이와 같은 자들을 존귀히 여기라 그가 그리스도의 일을 위하여 죽기에 이르러도 - 빌립보서 2:29-30
데스몬드 도스는 기본 군사훈련을 받는 동안 훈련교관과 동료들을 화나게 만들었습니다. 평화주의 신봉자인 그는 전쟁터에 무기를 휴대하기를 거부했고, 이 때문에 동료들은 그의 용기를 의심했습니다. 위생병으로 훈련을 받은 이 젊은 그리스도인은 아무 거리낌 없이 눈앞의 전투에 참여했습니다. 그러나 그의 목표는 생명을 구하는 것이었습니다.

성경에는 다른 사람들을 돕기 위해 큰 위험을 감수한 또 다른 그리스도인 이야기가 있습니다. 바울은 에바브로디도에 대해서 이렇게 쓰고 있습니다. “이와 같은 자들을 존귀히 여기라 그가 그리스도의 일을 위하여 죽기에 이르러도 자기 목숨을 돌보지 아니한 것은”(빌 2:29-30).
오늘날 전 세계에서 많은 믿는 자들이 그리스도를 위해서 목숨을 걸고 일하고 있습니다. 그들이 위협적인 상황 속에서 하나님을 섬기는 동안 하나님이 그들을 보호해주시도록 기도합시다.
오 주님, 자비를 구하는 저희의 간구를 들어주소서. 당신의 신실함으로 믿음 때문에 위험에
처한 이들이 구조 받게 하소서. 당신의 이름으로 그들의 생명을 보전하소서. 당신의 의로움으로 그들을
어려움에서 건져주소서.
용기란 전진할 힘이 있는 것이 아니라, 힘이 없어도 전진하는 것이다.
빌립보서 2:25-30
[25] 그러나 에바브로디도를 너희에게 보내는 것이 필요한 줄로 생각하노니 그는 나의 형제요 함께 수고하고 함께 군사 된 자요 너희 사자로 내가 쓸 것을 돕는 자라 [26] 그가 너희 무리를 간절히 사모하고 자기가 병든 것을 너희가 들은 줄을 알고 심히 근심한지라 [27] 그가 병들어 죽게 되었으나 하나님이 그를 긍휼히 여기셨고 그뿐 아니라 또 나를 긍휼히 여기사 내 근심 위에 근심을 면하게 하셨느니라 [28] 그러므로 내가 더욱 급히 그를 보낸 것은 너희로 그를 다시 보고 기뻐하게 하며 내 근심도 덜려 함이니라 [29] 이러므로 너희가 주 안에서 모든 기쁨으로 그를 영접하고 또 이와 같은 자들을 존귀히 여기라 [30] 그가 그리스도의 일을 위하여 죽기에 이르러도 자기 목숨을 돌보지 아니한 것은 나를 섬기는 너희의 일에 부족함을 채우려 함이니라
