“Okay, here are the rules,” Marty said. “You can do whatever you want, wherever you want, whenever you want until someone tells you no.”
Those were our instructions on our first visit to our friends’ lake house. Marty and his wife, Lynn, who enjoy entertaining, give their guests lots of freedom to enjoy themselves. When we noticed the sailboat next to the paddleboat next to the pontoon boat, we knew we were in for a fun afternoon.
Marty told us no only once—when he saw that we were about to feed the swans that swam up next to us. He knew that if the birds were fed once, they would become aggressive if they didn’t get fed the next time.

Adam and Eve lived in the most beautiful locale, and they too had lots of freedom. However, when God said no, they resisted (Gen.3). He told them not to eat from a certain tree, but they thought they knew better.
Adam and Eve would have kept good company with a lot of us. Sometimes we can’t understand why our heavenly Father says no. When that happens, He can help us to adjust our thinking. We need to realize that even as He denies us, He’s saying to our hearts, “You can trust Me. I know what is best.”

God may deny our request, but He will never disappoint our trust.
Genesis 3:1-7
[1] Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, "Did God really say, 'You must not eat from any tree in the garden'?" [2] The woman said to the serpent, "We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, [3] but God did say, 'You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.'" [4] "You will not surely die," the serpent said to the woman. [5] "For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil." [6] When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. [7] Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.

선악을 알게 하는 나무 열매는 먹지 말라 - 창세기 2:17
마티가 말했습니다, “자, 여기 규칙이 있습니다. 누군가가 ‘아니’라고 말하지 않는 한, 무엇이든지 할 수 있고, 어디에나 갈 수 있으며, 언제든지 하고 싶은 것을 할 수 있습니다.”
이것은 우리가 호숫가에 있는 친구의 집을 처음으로 방문했을 때 내려진 지시사항이었습니다. 손님 접대하기를 좋아하는 마티와 그의 아내 린은 손님들이 스스로 즐기도록 많은 자유를 주었습니다. 우리는 돛단배와 그 옆의 노 젓는 배와 그 옆에 있는 고무보트를 보고 즐거운 오후를 보낼 수 있을 거라고 생각했습니다.
마티가 유일하게 우리에게 ‘아니’라고 말했던 때는, 우리가 우리 옆으로 헤엄쳐 온 백조들에게 먹이를 막 주려는 순간이었습니다. 만일 백조들에게 먹이를 한번 주게 되면 다음번에 먹이를 주지 않을 때 그들이 공격적이 된다는 것을 그는 알고 있었던 것입니다.
아담과 하와는 가장 아름다운 장소에서 살았고, 그들 또한 많은 자유를 누렸습니다. 그러나 하나님이 ‘아니’라고 하셨을 때 그들은 반항했습니다(창 3장). 하나님이 그들에게 어떤 한 나무의 열매는 먹지 말라고 하셨지만, 그들은 자기들이 더 잘 안다고 생각했습니다.
우리 중 많은 사람들도 아담과 하와처럼 똑같이 그렇게 했을 것입니다. 때때로 우리는 하늘에 계신 우리 아버지가 왜 ‘아니’라고 말씀하시는지 이해가 안 될 때가 있습니다. 그럴 때, 하나님은 우리가 생각을 고치도록 도와주실 수 있습니다. 하나님이 ‘아니’라고 하실지라도, 우리는 그분이 우리 마음속에 “나를 믿어, 네게 가장 좋은 것이 무엇인지 내가 알아.”라고 말씀하신다는 것을 깨닫는 것이 필요합니다.
주님이 인도하시는 그 길을 내가 늘 이해하지는 못해도 주님이여, 믿음으로 주님의 손을 꼭 붙잡고 매번 주님을 의지하겠습니다.
하나님은 우리의 요구를 거절하실지라도 우리의 믿음을 결코 실망시키지 않으신다.
창세기 3:1-7
[1] 그런데 뱀은 여호와 하나님이 지으신 들짐승 중에 가장 간교하니라 뱀이 여자에게 물어 이르되 하나님이 참으로 너희에게 동산 모든 나무의 열매를 먹지 말라 하시더냐 [2] 여자가 뱀에게 말하되 동산 나무의 열매를 우리가 먹을 수 있으나 [3] 동산 중앙에 있는 나무의 열매는 하나님의 말씀에 너희는 먹지도 말고 만지지도 말라 너희가 죽을까 하노라 하셨느니라 [4] 뱀이 여자에게 이르되 너희가 결코 죽지 아니하리라 [5] 너희가 그것을 먹는 날에는 너희 눈이 밝아져 하나님과 같이 되어 선악을 알 줄 하나님이 아심이니라 [6] 여자가 그 나무를 본즉 먹음직도 하고 보암직도 하고 지혜롭게 할 만큼 탐스럽기도 한 나무인지라 여자가 그 열매를 따먹고 자기와 함께 있는 남편에게도 주매 그도 먹은지라 [7] 이에 그들의 눈이 밝아져 자기들이 벗은 줄을 알고 무화과나무 잎을 엮어 치마로 삼았더라
