I smelled something burning, so I hurried to the kitchen. Nothing was on the stove or in the oven. I followed my nose through the house. From room to room I went, eventually ending up downstairs. My nose led me to my office and then to my desk. I peeked beneath it and there, peering back at me with big eyes pleading for help, was Maggie, our dog, our very “fragrant” dog. What smelled like something burning when I was upstairs, now had the distinct odor of skunk. Maggie had gone to the farthest corner of our house to escape the foul smell, but she couldn’t get away from herself.
Maggie’s dilemma brought to mind the many times I have tried to run away from unpleasant circumstances only to discover that the problem was not the situation I was in but me. Since Adam and Eve hid after sinning(Gen.3:8), we’ve all followed their example. We run away from situations thinking we can escape the unpleasantness—only to discover that the unpleasantness is us.
The only way to escape ourselves is to stop hiding, acknowledge our waywardness, and let Jesus wash us clean(Rev.1:5). I am grateful that when we do sin, Jesus is willing to give us a brand-new start.

Genesis 3:6-13,22-24
[6] When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. [7] Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves. [8] Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the LORD God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the LORD God among the trees of the garden. [9] But the LORD God called to the man, "Where are you?" [10] He answered, "I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid." [11] And he said, "Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?" [12] The man said, "The woman you put here with me--she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it." [13] Then the LORD God said to the woman, "What is this you have done?" The woman said, "The serpent deceived me, and I ate."
[22] And the LORD God said, "The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever." [23] So the LORD God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken. [24] After he drove the man out, he placed on the east side of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.

숨을 곳이 없다
[ 창세기 3:6 - 3:13 ] - 찬송가274장
우리를 사랑하사 그의 피로 우리 죄에서 우리를
해방하시고 - 요한계시록 1:5
무언가 타는 냄새가 나서 부엌으로 달려갔습니다. 스토브 위에도 오븐 안에도 아무것도 없었습니다. 나는 냄새를 따라 온 집안을 돌아다녔습니다. 이 방에서 저 방으로 옮겨가다가 마침내 지하실로 내려갔습니다. 냄새는 내 서재에서, 바로 내 책상에서 나고 있었습니다. 책상 밑을 들여다보니 거기에 도움을 바라는 큰 눈으로 나를 응시하고 있는, 바로 그 “냄새”가 나는 우리 집 강아지 매기가 있었습니다. 내가 위층에 있을 때 맡았던 무언가 타는 것 같았던 냄새는 바로 스컹크의 독특한 냄새였습니다. 매기는 그 나쁜 냄새를 피하기 위해 우리 집의 가장 구석진 곳으로 도망갔었지만, 자기 자신에게 묻은 그 냄새로부터 도망갈 수가 없었습니다.
궁지에 몰린 매기의 모습을 보며, 내가 여러 번 불쾌한 상황으로부터 벗어나려고 했을 때 문제는 내가 처한 상황이 아니라 바로 나라는 것을 알게 되었던 일이 생각났습니다. 아담과 하와가 죄를 범한 후 숨었던 이래(창 3:8) 우리 모두는 그들을 본보기로 삼았습니다. 우리는 불쾌한 것을 피하기 위해 그 상황으로부터 달아나지만, 결국 그 불쾌한 원인이 바로 우리라는 것을 알게 될 뿐입니다.
우리가 도피할 수 있는 유일한 길은 숨는 것을 그만 두고, 우리 마음대로 한 것을 인정하고, 예수님이 우리를 깨끗이 씻기시게 하는 것입니다(계 1:5). 나는 우리가 죄를 범했을 때, 예수님이 우리에게 아주 새로운 출발을 할 수 있게 해주심을 감사하고 있습니다.
갈보리의 놀라운 십자가로부터 아직도 생수가 흐르고 있네 그것은 결코 변치 않는 사랑을 통해 마음을 청결케 하고 승리를 가져다주네
구주만이 죄로 인한 오염을
씻겨줄 수 있다.
