The Lord, the Lord God, merciful and gracious. — Exodus 34:6
The prayers of young children show us what they think of God. Here are two I read recently:
“Dear God, what does it mean that You are a ‘jealous’ God? I thought You had everything.”
“I didn’t think orange went with purple until I saw the sunset You made on Tuesday. That was cool.”
These children are right to think of God as the owner and creator of everything, the one who can paint beautiful sunsets. But how does God describe Himself?
Moses needed an answer to that question when he was about to lead the Israelites into the wilderness. He wanted to be assured of God’s presence and leading, so he asked Him to reveal Himself (Ex. 33:13,18). In response, God came down in a cloud and said: “The Lord, the Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth, ... by no means clearing the guilty”(34:5-7). He is good; He is just.
We too can know this God and be assured of His presence. He has revealed Himself in His creation and in His Word. As we ask Him to make Himself known to us, we’ll learn that He is even more than the owner and creator of everything!

In a world of superlatives,
God is the greatest.
Exodus 34:1-8
[1] The LORD said to Moses, "Chisel out two stone tablets like the first ones, and I will write on them the words that were on the first tablets, which you broke. [2] Be ready in the morning, and then come up on Mount Sinai. Present yourself to me there on top of the mountain. [3] No one is to come with you or be seen anywhere on the mountain; not even the flocks and herds may graze in front of the mountain." [4] So Moses chiseled out two stone tablets like the first ones and went up Mount Sinai early in the morning, as the LORD had commanded him; and he carried the two stone tablets in his hands. [5] Then the LORD came down in the cloud and stood there with him and proclaimed his name, the LORD. [6] And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, "The LORD, the LORD, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, [7] maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children and their children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation." [8] Moses bowed to the ground at once and worshiped.

하나님의 모습
[ 출애굽기 34:1 - 34:8 ] - 찬송가64장
여호와라 여호와라 자비롭고 은혜롭고...인자와 진실이 많은 하나님이라 - 출애굽기 34:6
어린아이들의 기도 문구를 보면 그들이 하나님을 어떻게 생각하는지 알 수 있습니다. 최근에 읽은 두 개의 기도문입니다.
“하나님, 하나님이 ‘질투하시는’ 하나님이라고 하는데 무슨 뜻이에요? 하나님은 모든 것을 다 갖고 계시잖아요?”
“지난 화요일에 하나님이 만드신 저녁노을을 보기까지는 보랏빛과 주황빛이 함께 어울릴 수 있다고는 생각조차 못했어요. 정말 멋있었어요.”
이 아이들이 하나님을 만물의 소유자요, 아름다운 석양에 색을 입히시는 창조자로 생각하는 것은 맞는 말입니다. 그러면 하나님은 자신을 어떻게 묘사하고 있을까요?
모세는 이스라엘백성을 광야로 이끌고 나가려할 때 이 질문에 대한 답이 필요했습니다. 그는 하나님의 임재와 인도하심을 확인받고 싶었습니다. 그래서 그는 하나님께 자신을 드러내주시기를 요청했습니다(출 33:13,18). 이에 하나님은 구름 속에서 내려오셔서 다음과 같이 말씀하셨습니다, “여호와라 여호와라 자비롭고 은혜롭고 노하기를 더디하고 인자와 진실이 많은 하나님이라...그러나 벌을 면제하지는 아니하고”(34:5-7). 하나님은 선하시고 또한 의로우신 분이십니다.
우리 또한 이 하나님을 알 수 있고 그의 임재를 확신할 수 있습니다. 하나님은 창조세계와 그분의 말씀을 통해서 자신을 나타내셨습니다. 우리에게 하나님을 알려달라고 하나님께 간구하면, 하나님은 만물의 소유자와 창조자 이상의 훨씬 위대하신 분이라는 것을 깨닫게 될 것입니다.
모든 만물을 지으신 하나님 전능하신 하나님, 사랑의 하나님 우리의 구원이 되신 하나님 위에서 다스리시는 하나님을 찬양하라
최고의 것들로 가득 찬 이 세상에서도 하나님이 가장 위대하시다.
출애굽기 34:1-8
[1] 여호와께서 모세에게 이르시되 너는 돌판 둘을 처음 것과 같이 다듬어 만들라 네가 깨뜨린 처음 판에 있던 말을 내가 그 판에 쓰리니 [2] 아침까지 준비하고 아침에 시내 산에 올라와 산 꼭대기에서 내게 보이되 [3] 아무도 너와 함께 오르지 말며 온 산에 아무도 나타나지 못하게 하고 양과 소도 산 앞에서 먹지 못하게 하라 [4] 모세가 돌판 둘을 처음 것과 같이 깎아 만들고 아침에 일찍이 일어나 그 두 돌판을 손에 들고 여호와의 명령대로 시내 산에 올라가니 [5] 여호와께서 구름 가운데에 강림하사 그와 함께 거기 서서 여호와의 이름을 선포하실새 [6] 여호와께서 그의 앞으로 지나시며 선포하시되 여호와라 여호와라 자비롭고 은혜롭고 노하기를 더디하고 인자와 진실이 많은 하나님이라 [7] 인자를 천대까지 베풀며 악과 과실과 죄를 용서하리라 그러나 벌을 면제하지는 아니하고 아버지의 악행을 자손 삼사 대까지 보응하리라 [8] 모세가 급히 땅에 엎드려 경배하며
