That I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death. — Philippians 3:10
Before the electronic gadgets and distractions of today, the long summer days of my boyhood were brightened each week when the bookmobile arrived. It was a bus lined with book-filled shelves that were transported from the regional library to neighborhoods so that those without transportation could access them. Because of the bookmobile, I spent many a happy summer day reading books that would otherwise have been inaccessible. To this day, I am thankful for the love of books that the bookmobile fostered in me.
Some Bible scholars say that the apostle Paul had a love of books and studied them till the end of his life. He wrote in his final letter, “Bring the cloak that I left with Carpus at Troas when you come—and the books, especially the parchments” (2 Tim. 4:13). The books he was asking for could very well have been the Old Testament and/or some of his own writings.
I’m sure that Paul’s pursuit of knowledge was more than intellectual curiosity or entertainment. It was the pursuit of Christ that drove Paul. His goal: “That I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death” (Phil 3:10). I pray that this same pursuit will drive us today.
Heavenly Father, give me a passionate desire to know You and Your Son. Please stir my heart for this, the greatest of all pursuits, so that I might grow ever
closer to You. Amen.
To know Christ is the greatest of
all knowledge.
Philippians 3:7-14
[7] But whatever was to my profit I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. [8] What is more, I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ [9] and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ--the righteousness that comes from God and is by faith. [10] I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, [11] and so, somehow, to attain to the resurrection from the dead. [12] Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. [13] Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, [14] I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

이동도서관
[ 빌립보서 3:7 - 3:14 ] - 찬송가453장
내가 그리스도와 그 부활의 권능과 그 고난에 참여함을 알고자 하여 그의 죽으심을 본받아 - 빌립보서 3:10
현대의 전자기기들이나 정신을 산만하게 하는 것들이 나오기 이전 나의 소년시절, 나는 매주 찾아왔던 이동도서관 덕분에 긴 여름날을 행복하게 보냈습니다. 버스 안에 있는 선반에는 교통수단이 없는 사람들이 도서관 책을 이용할 수 있도록 지역도서관에서 이웃 마을들로 옮겨온 책들이 가득 채워져 있었습니다. 다른 방법으로는 이용할 수 없었던 책들을 이동도서관 덕분에 읽으면서 나는 많은 행복한 여름날을 보낼 수 있었습니다. 이동도서관이 나에게 책을 사랑하는 마음을 키워준 것에 대해 나는 지금도 감사하고 있습니다.
어떤 성경학자들은 바울사도가 책을 사랑하였고 그의 삶의 마지막 순간까지 책으로 공부하였다고 말합니다. 그는 마지막 서신에서 쓰기를 “네가 올 때에 내가 드로아 가보의 집에 둔 겉옷을 가지고 오고 또 책은 특별히 가죽종이에 쓴 것을 가져오라”(딤후 4:13)라고 했습니다. 그가 요청했던 책은 아마도 구약이거나 그가 직접 쓴 내용이었던 것 같습니다.
바울의 지식 추구는 확실히 지적 호기심이나 흥미 그 이상이었을 것으로 확신합니다. 바울을 이끌었던 것은 그리스도에 대한 추구였습니다. 그의 목표는 “그리스도와 그 부활의 권능과 그 고난에 참여함을 알고자 하여 그의 죽으심을 본받는”(빌 3:10) 것이었습니다. 이와 똑같은 추구가 오늘날 우리를 이끌어갈 수 있기를 나는 기도합니다.
하늘에 계신 하나님 아버지, 하나님과 예수 그리스도를 알아가는 열정을 허락하소서. 모든 추구들 중에서 가장 위대한 그 열정을 위해 내 마음을 움직여주소서. 그리하여 내가 하나님께 더 가까이 자라가게 하소서. 아멘.
모든 지식 중에서 가장 큰 지식은
그리스도를 아는 것이다.

[7] 그러나 무엇이든지 내게 유익하던 것을 내가 그리스도를 위하여 다 해로 여길뿐더러 [8] 또한 모든 것을 해로 여김은 내 주 그리스도 예수를 아는 지식이 가장 고상하기 때문이라 내가 그를 위하여 모든 것을 잃어버리고 배설물로 여김은 그리스도를 얻고 [9] 그 안에서 발견되려 함이니 내가 가진 의는 율법에서 난 것이 아니요 오직 그리스도를 믿음으로 말미암은 것이니 곧 믿음으로 하나님께로부터 난 의라 [10] 내가 그리스도와 그 부활의 권능과 그 고난에 참여함을 알고자 하여 그의 죽으심을 본받아 [11] 어떻게 해서든지 죽은 자 가운데서 부활에 이르려 하노니 [12] 내가 이미 얻었다 함도 아니요 온전히 이루었다 함도 아니라 오직 내가 그리스도 예수께 잡힌 바 된 그것을 잡으려고 달려가노라 [13] 형제들아 나는 아직 내가 잡은 줄로 여기지 아니하고 오직 한 일 즉 뒤에 있는 것은 잊어버리고 앞에 있는 것을 잡으려고 [14] 푯대를 향하여 그리스도 예수 안에서 하나님이 위에서 부르신 부름의 상을 위하여 달려가노라
