May the Lord make you increase and abound in love to one another and to all, just as we do to you. — 1 Thess. 3:12
A rallying cry often heard today in our economically challenged world is “Less and less.” Governments are called to balance their budgets. People are urged to use less energy and decrease consumption of limited resources. It is good advice that we should all heed. In the realm of faith, however, there are no shortages of love and grace and strength. Therefore, as followers of Christ, we are urged to demonstrate His love in our lives in ever-increasing measure.
In the apostle Paul’s first letter to the believers in Thessalonica, he urged them to “abound more and more” in a lifestyle that pleases God (4:1). He also commended them for their demonstration of love for each other, and called them to “increase more and more” in brotherly love (v.10).
That kind of ever-increasing love is possible only because it comes from God’s limitless resources, not from our own dwindling supply. Poet Annie Johnson Flint wrote:
His love has no limit, His grace has no measure, His power has no boundary known unto men; For out of His infinite riches in Jesus, He giveth, and giveth, and giveth again.
The apostle Paul expressed his desire for the believers: “May the Lord make you increase and abound in love to one another and to all, just as we do to you”(1 Thess. 3:12).
How much should we love God and others? More and more!
His love has no limit, His grace has no measure, His power has no boundary known unto men; For out of His infinite riches in Jesus,He giveth, and giveth,
and giveth again.
Our limited ability to love does not change God’s limitless power to love through us.
1 Thessalonians 3:12–4:10
12] May the Lord make your love increase and overflow for each other and for everyone else, just as ours does for you. [13] May he strengthen your hearts so that you will be blameless and holy in the presence of our God and Father when our Lord Jesus comes with all his holy ones. [4:1] Finally, brothers, we instructed you how to live in order to please God, as in fact you are living. Now we ask you and urge you in the Lord Jesus to do this more and more. [2] For you know what instructions we gave you by the authority of the Lord Jesus. [3] It is God's will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality; [4] that each of you should learn to control his own body in a way that is holy and honorable, [5] not in passionate lust like the heathen, who do not know God; [6] and that in this matter no one should wrong his brother or take advantage of him. The Lord will punish men for all such sins, as we have already told you and warned you. [7] For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life. [8] Therefore, he who rejects this instruction does not reject man but God, who gives you his Holy Spirit. [9] Now about brotherly love we do not need to write to you, for you yourselves have been taught by God to love each other. [10] And in fact, you do love all the brothers throughout Macedonia. Yet we urge you, brothers, to do so more and more.

더욱 더 많이

`지금처럼 경제적으로 힘든 세상에서 자주 들려오는 외침은 “더욱 더 적게”입니다. 정부는 예산에 맞춰 집행하라는 주문을 받습니다. 사람들은 에너지를 덜 쓰고 한정된 자원의 소비를 줄이라고 재촉을 받습니다. 이는 우리 모두가 유의해야할 좋은 충고입니다. 그러나 믿음의 영역에서는 사랑과 은혜와 강건함에 모자람이란 없습니다. 따라서 그리스도를 따르는 자들로서 우리는 하나님의 사랑을 우리 삶에서 더욱 더 많이 보여주라는 권고를 받습니다.
데살로니가에 있는 신자들에게 보내는 첫 번째 서신에서 바울사도는 하나님을 기쁘시게 하는 생활방식으로 “더욱 많이 힘쓰라”고 권면합니다(4:1). 그는 또한 그들이 서로 사랑을 실천하는 것을 칭찬하며 “더 많이” 형제들을 사랑할 것을 권했습니다(10절).
우리가 그처럼 계속해서 더 많은 사랑을 베풀 수 있는 것은 그 사랑의 근원이 금방 바닥나는 우리 자신에게 있지 않고 자원이 무한한 하나님께 있기 때문입니다. 시인인 애니 존슨 플린트는 이렇게 썼습니다.
`주의 사랑은 끝이 없고, 주의 은혜는 측량할 수 없네 주의 능력은 사람이 아는 테두리에 가둘 수 없네 예수님 안에 있는 무한한 풍성함으로 베푸시고 베푸시고 또 베푸시네
바울사도는 “주께서 우리가 너희를 사랑함과 같이 너희도 피차간과 모든 사람에 대한 사랑이 더욱 많아 넘치게 하시기를 원하노라”(살전 3:12)라고 하면서 신자들을 향한 자신의 소망을 표현했습니다.
우리는 얼마나 하나님과 사람들을 사랑해야 할까요? ‘더욱 많이’사랑해야 합니다.

사랑의 능력이 금세 바닥나는 우리이지만, 하나님은 그런 우리를 통해서도 무한한 사랑을 베푸실 수 있다.
